Chapter 616 Seducing Her
Anthony was quiet.
The first time he met Rebecca, he was just doing his job as Zachary's lawyer, following orders. He didn't even remember her face. The threats to sue her were just a joke. If he had been serious, she would have been in jail by now.
Who knew those things would come back to bite him? It's true what they say: karma always catches up with you.
And now, it had.
If he had known he would fall for her, he would have been more serious back then.
Anthony asked, "Is that the only reason?"
"Not entirely. It's just that being with someone like you," she said, with a hint of disdain, quickly adding, "I mean, your profession. Being with someone in your line of work is exhausting. If everything goes smoothly and we grow old together, fine. But if we break up or get divorced, it's too much hassle. When Winona and Zachary divorced, you, as their ruthless lawyer, almost drove her to depression."
"With such a big warning sign, I'd be crazy to trust you completely. I'd have to keep track of every penny I spend, just in case you sue me one day and I have no evidence to defend myself."
Since they were breaking up, it was better to lay everything out to avoid future entanglements.
Anthony felt helpless. "Winning cases for my clients is my duty as a lawyer. It was Mr. Bailey who demanded Winona repay three hundred million dollars before agreeing to the divorce. You can't blame me for that."
"That three hundred million was pre-marital property. There was no transfer agreement, so it was a given that it would be returned. The lawyer doesn't matter; what matters is the client's decision."
Rebecca took another sip of her drink, silent for a full half-minute, as if seriously considering Anthony's words. Then she said, "You're right."
Anthony sighed in relief. At least she was listening to reason.
But before he could fully relax, Rebecca added, "But I don't care."
Anthony had never felt so frustrated, not even during his college days when he studied law for hours on end with barely three hours of sleep. "So, you're worried that if we break up, I'll make you repay money?"
"Yes."
"Then let's go Dutch."
Rebecca looked at him with disdain, scanning him from head to toe. "Then what's the point of being with you? Staring at your face and imagining things? Even the most handsome man in the world would be annoying if he's unreliable. I'd rather find someone compatible and be happy."
"Then let's get married tomorrow. After marriage, all my assets will be joint property, and all expenses will be shared. Even if we divorce, you'll get a substantial amount after deducting expenses."
"Don't think I don't know the law. Pre-marital assets remain personal property and don't become joint property just because of marriage." She had spent some time at the law firm, even if only as a driver, and had flipped through a few pages of the marriage law.
Anthony couldn't help but ruffle her hair as she looked up at him with a proud expression. "We can sign an agreement."
Rebecca fell silent.
She didn't speak, but her eyes were filled with suspicion.
Anthony asked, "What's up?"
"Do you know so much because you're after my money?"
Anthony was quiet.
"Let me tell you, my store barely makes enough to cover my expenses. I have to use a credit card to buy an extra bag. I have a brother who's a total slacker, and my parents have said that everything in the Davis family will go to him. I'll only get a house, the one I'm living in now, which is smaller than your bathroom."
Trying to make Anthony lose interest, Rebecca almost painted her family in the worst light.
Anthony seemed at a loss for words. After several attempts, he finally managed to say, "I wouldn't sell myself for your little bit of money."
Not to mention the annual dividends from the Bailey Group, his legal fees alone were substantial.
"If you're really worried, you can get a pre-marital property statement. What's mine is yours, and what's yours is still yours."
Now it was Rebecca's turn to feel embarrassed, ashamed of her mistrust. "It's not that I don't trust you."
"If money isn't an issue, then we don't need to break up, right? At least let's date for a while and see if we're compatible."
"Haven't we already dated? We're not compatible."
"Not this kind of sporadic dating, Rebecca," Anthony's low voice, combined with the wine and his handsome face, was the perfect aphrodisiac. "That's not how you date."
Rebecca felt a bit tipsy, her mouth not fully under control. "Then how do you date?"
Anthony placed his hand on her shoulder, sliding it down to hold her hand, "For example, holding hands."
They were so close they could feel each other's breath. His lips brushed against hers, his tongue lightly sweeping over them like a feather, "For example, kissing."
He tasted the wine on her lips.
He intended to pull back, afraid of scaring her off, but Rebecca's wide-eyed, dazed look made him lose control.
He was about to deepen the kiss when Rebecca suddenly snapped out of it, pulling back.
She had come to break up with Anthony, not to kiss him.
Anthony's attempt to deepen the kiss landed on her chin.
Rebecca, furious, threw her glass at him. "Anthony, you're seducing me! You're shameless."
The word 'seducing' amused him, dissipating much of his disappointment. He straightened up, placing the glass back on the table.
His chest was soaked with wine, the wet fabric clinging to his body, revealing his muscular outline.
Rebecca couldn't help but swallow.
With Anthony's looks and body, it wasn't entirely her fault if she couldn't resist.
Who could?
Rebecca wasn't going to continue the meal. Anthony stood up, "I'll change and drive you home."
"No need."
"Then are you staying here tonight?"
"You're an idiot. I drove here. I'll go back myself." She grabbed her bag and left, not mentioning the breakup dinner again.
...
In a hotel in Rosewood City.
Winona looked at Zachary with concern, frowning. "Zachary, what's wrong?"
