Chapter 687 Not Looking for a Husband

"It's not that hard," Winona said, glancing back at Zachary, who was lagging behind with a bunch of bags.

When he noticed her looking, he gave her a particularly pitiful look, which made her laugh. "Mom, you don't need to give me any more skincare products. I have plenty. You should keep them for yourself."

Lydia replied, "Skincare products are like shoes for women. You can never have too many."

Zachary, not missing a beat, chimed in, "She's just worried they'll expire. Her vanity drawers are overflowing."

Lydia turned around and swatted at his head. "I'm talking to Winona. Why are you butting in?"

She waved him off dismissively. "Go make dinner. Stop interrupting my conversation with Winona."

Zachary fell silent, feeling a bit sidelined. He suspected that Winona was the real favorite child.

He headed into the kitchen and closed the door to keep the cooking smells from wafting into the living room.

Lydia pulled Winona down onto the couch. "Winona, when are you and Zachary planning to get remarried?"

Not wanting to pressure her, Lydia quickly added, "I'm not trying to rush you. I was just wondering since you two have been back together for a while now. If you want to get married, go ahead. If not, you can wait."

Winona was such a catch. Lydia worried that if they didn't make it official soon, someone else might swoop in. Her son was the only one who didn't seem to be in a hurry.

"Mom, we actually came here today to tell you about it. Zachary and I just registered our marriage."

Lydia's eyes widened with joy. "Registered? You mean you and Zachary are really remarried?"

"Yes."

"Really? You're not joking?" The news was so sudden, she didn't have time to process it. "Show me."

If they were really remarried, she could finally stop worrying. The fear that Alton had instilled in her was momentarily forgotten, replaced by thoughts of planning a grand wedding to silence the naysayers.

Winona sighed. "Zachary has the papers. It's true, Mom. I'm not lying."

Lydia jumped up. "I need to see this."

Half a minute later, her excited voice came from the kitchen. "Stop cooking! I'm so happy today. We're going out to eat. Go get your dad. We're celebrating Winona and Zachary's remarriage with a feast."

She had been eating so-called healthy meals at home for so long that her taste buds were bored. This was a perfect excuse to go out and enjoy a proper meal.

Before they could call him, Evander came down the stairs, having overheard the news. He couldn't help but smile. "Let's just eat at home. They work a lot and often have business dinners. I'm sure they're tired of eating out."

Lydia was still fragile and couldn't handle rich, salty foods or any excitement. Plus, the situation with Alton was still unresolved. It was safer for her to stay home for now.

The last time she was taken from the hospital, he had been terrified.

Lydia knew her husband too well. She scoffed. "Don't think I don't know what you're up to. I'm not going to imprison myself forever just to avoid him. He didn't kill me last time, and he won't kill me next time. I won't rest until that psycho is brought to justice."

Mentioning Alton ruined her good mood. Just hearing his name made her sick.

Evander tried to reason with her. "I'm just worried that once you go out, you won't be able to stop. The doctor said you need to eat light. You can't have high-calorie foods."

Here he goes again, Lydia thought, bringing a bunch of reasons with him.

She made one last attempt to argue, but Evander was firm. "No. You need to take care of yourself. These foods are off-limits for the next year."

Considering Lydia's health, they ended up choosing lighter dishes.

Lydia looked at the bland food on the table, her shoulders slumping. She picked at her meal, only eating more because Winona kept serving her.

"By the way, Winona, how's the case going? Have they found evidence to clear your name?"

There had been a lot of people at the Fields family's engagement party. Despite the police's efforts to keep it quiet, word had spread.

After all, it was a murder case. Lydia remembered Maeve's name because she had once saved Zachary and needed stitches. She had a good impression of her.

When she heard about the incident from a friend, she immediately called Zachary for details. She learned that Maeve's date that night was Zachary, and that Winona was somehow involved and had become a suspect.

Her impression of Maeve soured. Zachary had a fiancée, and Maeve should have kept her distance. Lydia didn't believe for a second that Maeve had no ulterior motives.

Winona replied, "Maeve committed suicide. Someone recorded the whole thing, and the video has been given to the police. We should have a resolution soon."

Lydia frowned. "They had time to record a video but not to call security? That person isn't any good either. And they hid this from the police during questioning."

If they had handed over the video right away, Winona wouldn't have been a suspect.

"Stay away from selfish, cold-hearted people like that. Let Zachary handle it."

"Okay."

Winona nodded obediently. She had also found it strange that someone would record Maeve's suicide instead of calling for help. She had asked Zachary about it, but he had only said, "She was scared."
