Chapter 515 You're Fired
Zachary ran his hand over his abs, feeling the muscles through his shirt. He could count them easily—six in total, but they were getting a bit soft from skipping workouts. Winona had mentioned she was into eight-pack abs now. If he didn't hit the gym soon, his six-pack might turn into a one-pack.
Would Winona dump him like Julia did for not meeting her muscle standards?
The more Zachary thought about it, the more anxious he got. He jumped into his car and, after a lot of hesitation, sent Winona a message: [Winona, don't you think I deserve a promotion? I've been your intern boyfriend for ages; it's about time I became official, right? Even companies only have a three-month internship period.]
That sounded kinda accusatory. No, Winona had been the subject of gossip among the nurses and was probably in a bad mood. Zachary needed to rephrase it.
He deleted the message and started typing again. Zachary: [The engagement ring I ordered is ready. Do you want to check out the design?]
No, that would ruin the surprise proposal.
Such a big pink diamond, any girl would love it.
Zachary deleted the message again and kept thinking. Finally, he decided to ask his soon-to-be father-in-law for help. Even though his own love life was a mess, Evander might be able to mediate, and Winona would probably listen to him.
Zachary was about to exit the chat with Winona when he saw "typing..." appear at the top of the chat box.
Winona: [Sorry, officially informing you that you have been fired for taking four months off without reason. Also, Mr. Ramsey, please remember your status. Even though I'm no longer pregnant, I had a miscarriage, so you should be even less interested.]
Zachary went silent.
Winona even used formal language; she was clearly drawing a line between them.
If Zachary had known, he wouldn't have asked that question.
Winona glanced at the nurse taking her temperature. The nurse wasn't looking at her but kept glancing towards the door. Winona reminded her, "The thermometer's been in for ten minutes. Can it be taken out now?"
The nurse snapped out of it and replied, "Yes, you can take it out now."
Winona handed her the thermometer. The nurse held it up to the light and said, "It seems like it didn't register."
Winona said, "My friend has already left and won't be coming back up."
"No fever," the nurse said briskly, putting the thermometer back into the stainless steel cup. "Miss Sullivan, please rest well. The doctor will do rounds at 8 AM tomorrow." With that, she left with the tray.
It was clear she had other intentions. After the door closed, Winona picked up her phone and angrily replied to Zachary. Winona: [I'm going to sleep. If you message me again, I'll block you.]
After a while, Zachary indeed didn't send any more messages.
The next day.
After the doctor's rounds, Winona was discharged. She wasn't really sick, but to keep up appearances, the Bailey family sent a car to pick her up and take her directly to the Bailey family estate.
At that time, Lydia was in the yard watering flowers. When she saw the car pull in, she quickly put down the watering can and walked over. She had been avoiding the estate recently, afraid she might slip up about Zachary. Lydia looked quite well, though she had a lot more gray hair than before.
Winona got out of the car and, seeing her, felt a pang of heartache. "Lydia, why do you have so much more gray hair recently?" she asked.
Lydia, not wanting her to worry, reassured her, "It's not recent. I've always had it; I just haven't dyed my hair lately, so it looks like more. You haven't visited me in a while, so it seems like a lot. If you don't come by more often, I'll think you've forgotten about me."
"How could I? I've just been really busy lately," Winona comforted her. "Lydia, I have something I want to ask you."
