Chapter 212: Amputation is Likely
Winona didn't say anything. Although Zachary's words were hurtful, he wasn't obligated to save her in the first place. Now that he regretted it, she couldn't get angry and argue with him.
That would be really impolite.
Winona still held a cotton swab soaked in medicine in her hand, but the man had already pulled his hand back, clearly rejecting her assistance.
Zachary's face was tense and cold, and with the escalating silence in the room and his increasingly hostile posture, he pursed his lips and stiffly said, "Speak."
Winona threw the cotton swab into the trash bin. "Regardless, I still want to thank you."
The man sat on the sofa, watching her half-heartedly thank him, feeling extreme displeasure in his heart. "Other people say thank you, at least they would treat to a meal, but you, you don't even say thank you sincerely."
Winona gritted her teeth and restrained herself, saying, "Then what do you want to eat? I'll make a reservation."
Zachary glanced at her, his expression somewhat proud. "Do I look like I'm lacking food?"
No, he looks like he's lacking brains.
Winona took a deep breath. "Then I can only apologize."
Just as Zachary was puzzled by what she meant by that, he heard the woman next to him continue, "I can only make myself the villain, but I never intended to repay the favor."
The man sneered, about to say something, when the phone on the coffee table rang. He picked it up and glanced at it. It was Dylan calling. "Mr. Bailey, Carlos has been captured."
Hanging up the phone, he looked at Winona. "Carlos has been found, he's at the police station now."
Winona thought about how everything that had happened to her tonight was because of Carlos, and a cold smile appeared on her lips. Although she hadn't suffered much harm, being plunged into icy water twice in a row in this weather was not a pleasant experience.
The police station.
As soon as Winona got out of Zachary's car, Dylan came up to her. "Madam, Carlos has been portraying himself as the victim throughout the entire process. He denies any involvement in your incident, and claims that he was sleeping at home when it happened. The nanny is a witness, and the loan company did find records of his borrowing, but not as much as you thought, only five million."
He spoke quickly, calling her 'madam' naturally and skillfully. Before Winona could react and correct his address of her, the topic had already shifted in a different direction.
She gave Dylan a resentful glare and walked into the office of the police station.
Inside the office, Carlos was also present. Perhaps realizing that he didn't have much leverage, he put on a face that oozed fake concern when he saw Winona. "Winona, I heard from the police that you've been harassed by that group of loan sharks. It's my fault for not being a good father and causing trouble for you. I promise I'll change after I get out."
Winona looked at him with a sarcastic smile. "With that expression, are you regretting not being harsh enough on the person you hired and not getting the large inheritance my mother left for me?"
Carlos's expression changed. "You've really received the money your mother left you?"
After Sullivan's group disbanded, he had been trying to stage a comeback. He had done various businesses in the past few years, but none of them were profitable. Having been accustomed to a life of luxury, he couldn't bear to live in poverty again.
Winona looked at his greedy appearance. "No, but you can dream with a higher pillow in prison."
"Winona, I'm still your father, how can you be so heartless!"
The police came over to take a statement, and Winona explained today's events in detail. Then she opened her phone and played a recorded audio.
Carlos's confident face instantly changed.
In the recording, his voice came through clearly: "Boss XX, when I get the money, I will definitely give you a generous reward."
"To deceive even his own daughter, you really are a despicable person. But I like you, this despicable person. Don't worry, I will make sure she vomits everything out!"
The surname of the other person was blurred, not because Winona wanted to protect the criminal, but because she obtained it through Caleb's help. That's how it was when she received it.
Carlos became emotionally charged and was about to snatch Winona's phone, "What are you doing..."
He almost said something that would incriminate himself, but Carlos changed his words, "Even if you hate me and think that I treat you and Layla differently, you can't hire someone to impersonate my voice and record this illegal and criminal video!"
Winona didn't waste her breath on him and handed the audio to the police. "Carlos found out from somewhere that I had received a sum of money, and he came to my doorstep a few days ago for this reason. I suspect that he instigated someone to harm me in order to force me to hand over that money."
"Mrs. Sullivan, we will investigate this matter thoroughly. You can go back now. If there is any new development or if we need your cooperation, we will call you."
After receiving the response, Winona prepared to leave.
Zachary, who had been silent, spoke in a calm tone, "If her evidence is not enough, I have something here."
Dylan immediately presented a high-definition surveillance video with sound, immediately confirming Carlos's involvement in the crime.
Carlos lost his composure and started verbally abusing Winona. He didn't dare to insult Zachary and could only vent his anger on Winona.
After leaving the police station, Winona felt relieved. Even though it was almost dawn, she didn't feel the least bit sleepy.
She smiled at Zachary and said, "Even though you don't need it, I still want to thank Mr. Bailey. It's late, so you should go back and rest."
She had come in Zachary's car, but this time, she didn't plan on taking his car back. Instead, she prepared to hail a taxi at the entrance.
Zachary watched her eager figure trying to escape and sarcastically remarked, "Who says it's not late? It's quite early, even the sun is still..."
"Mr. Bailey," Dylan raised his voice to interrupt him, "Your hand is bleeding."
In order to create a harmonious and pleasant working environment for himself in the future, he decided to take a step forward and directly stop Mr. Bailey from speaking, which could easily anger people. "Mrs. Sullivan, it's hot lately and wounds are prone to infection. Just look at Mr. Bailey. He got seriously injured for the sake of saving you, and his wound hasn't been bandaged. Knowing Mr. Bailey's temperament, he wouldn't even mention a minor injury or illness. If it gets infected, he might need amputation."
Winona had already called for a car on her phone and without looking back, she casually responded, "Makes sense. So, you can take Mr. Bailey to the hospital to get the wound dressed. Remember to change the dressing. If he gets infected and needs amputation, it'll be your negligence."
