Chapter 666 He Will, Definitely Will
Winona didn't bother with her clutch, and her dress was too much of a hassle, so she had stashed her phone in Rebecca's bag before coming. If she had known this would happen, she would've kept it with her.
But since the kidnappers went to such lengths, they probably wouldn't let them keep their phones anyway. She was just asking.
"No," Zachary replied. His suit was tailored to fit snugly, so it was obvious he didn't have a phone.
As soon as he spoke, the silence around them became almost suffocating. Winona didn't have claustrophobia, but it was incredibly dark in there.
She struggled to move her chair closer to Zachary, feeling braver with him by her side.
Suddenly, Zachary let out a muffled groan.
Winona realized belatedly that she had bumped into his injured arm. She quickly moved away. "Sorry, I forgot your arm was hurt."
She actually remembered, but in the dark, she couldn't tell left from right.
Zachary couldn't see Winona's face, but hearing her anxious, apologetic tone, he wasn't sure how upset she was. He quickly reassured her gently, "It's not my arm hurting, it's my legs. They've gone numb from being tied up for so long."
Winona moved her chair behind him, facing away, and tried to reach the knots on his wrists. "Let me see if I can untie you."
He had already tried earlier. The knots were professionally done, and the curve of the chair back left them little room to maneuver. It was nearly impossible to untie them, especially in the dark.
But he didn't refuse her. It gave Winona something to do, keeping her from overthinking. "Why didn't you tell me you were going to the engagement party?"
He remembered that day in the car when she had specifically asked if he was free on Wednesday. She must have received Maeve's text by then.
Before heading to the Fields family tonight, Zachary had made arrangements, not expecting Winona to show up, nor that the mastermind would switch targets from him to Winona.
He had wanted to keep her safe, but in the end, she was dragged into danger anyway.
Winona scoffed, "If I had told you, would I have seen you and Ms. Harrington looking so cozy together?"
The more she thought about it, the angrier she got. She scratched his hand with her nails. "You lied to me. You rejected her so decisively in front of me, even blocked her. But then you turned around and got involved with her, even accompanied her to the party as her date."
"Were you happy when she held onto you?"
"I didn't let her hold onto me," Zachary said confidently, because he truly hadn't let Maeve get close. "I wasn't pretending when I rejected her in front of you. I meant what I said. But Maeve came to the office later, saying that person would be at the Fields family party."
She also mentioned things related to his current physical condition, asking him: Do you know why only I can relieve your headaches?
This piqued Zachary's curiosity. He had always thought Maeve's massage technique was unique, and she had hinted at that. But when he had Richard learn it, the results were disappointing, almost nonexistent.
At first, he thought it was because Richard hadn't practiced enough or Maeve had withheld some secrets. But from what Maeve implied, the issue wasn't the technique but the person.
Winona wasn't buying Zachary's explanation. "You believe everything she says? Are you out of your mind? You know she has ulterior motives, yet you still follow her. Aren't you afraid she's bait, trying to lure you into a trap?"
She paused.
If Maeve was bait, it was clear she was the fish they wanted to catch.
From that text message, everything had been a setup, targeting her.
Winona was puzzled. "Why kidnap me? If they want Bailey Group shares, wouldn't kidnapping you be more effective?"
Though it was a bit harsh, it was true. The Bailey Group shares were still in Evander's hands. Anyone would know who to target for success.
Zachary hadn't figured it out either. He suspected the mastermind was Alton, whether he wanted to reclaim what he lost or avenge Timothy. Targeting him would be the quickest and most direct way, with no need to involve Winona.
"Winona, I don't know what their goal is, but whatever they demand, don't resist. Protect yourself and hold on until Samuel finds us."
His brow furrowed. If he were the only one kidnapped, he wouldn't be afraid. He had anticipated such scenarios and prepared accordingly. But now that Winona was involved, he couldn't help but worry.
He feared he couldn't protect her, feared she would get hurt, feared they would use the same methods Timothy had used against him on Winona.
Even though it had been a long time, the memories of those tortures still made him shudder. Despite enduring the physical and psychological torment day after day, it left unavoidable scars.
When he woke up back then, wasn't it a similar situation? Except he had been handcuffed to a bed.
He couldn't bear the thought of Winona going through the same pain.
If it came to that, he hoped Winona would forget about him and follow the script they had given her.
"Will he find us?" Winona asked.
She didn't have much hope. That person had been back in the country for a while, and she knew Zachary and his team had been searching, but to no avail.
Zachary replied firmly, "He will. Definitely."
The door creaked open, the old iron scraping against the floor with a piercing sound. Winona hurriedly tried to move back to her original spot, but she had only moved a couple of steps when the sudden light dispelled the darkness.
With their cover blown, Winona froze, not daring to move.
Two men walked in, wearing hoods and gloves, only their eyes visible. Seeing Winona out of place, one of them sneered, "Already so lively after waking up. Looks like you're too relaxed."
He walked up to Winona and, without any pity, kicked her to the ground.
The chair and Winona crashed to the floor with a loud thud.
