Chapter 638 Go In and Can't Get Out

Winona reached out, stopping him from getting too close, and gave him a forced smile. "Don't you wanna know what Maeve and I talked about?"

Zachary wasn't interested.

It had been a while since they had been intimate. That morning, Winona had helped him to bed, her robe loosely tied, leaving him distracted all morning. He kept picturing the tantalizing glimpse of her body beneath her collar, and as a result, he hadn't accomplished as much work as he usually did in an hour.

It was already the weekend, and he wanted to finish quickly and go home. But the morning had passed, and he hadn't even completed half of his tasks. Dylan had shot him several frustrated looks, clearly annoyed but unable to say anything.

Seeing Winona's eager expression, Zachary decided to play along. "Alright, what did you two talk about?"

He thought she had some news to share, but Winona said, "I asked her if you were sick. Guess what she said?"

Maeve hadn't given her a clear answer, so she was trying to trick Zachary.

Zachary's hand around her waist stiffened. His mind and body were out of sync as he tried to think of a way to cover it up. But his voice betrayed him. "What did she say?"

Winona wasn't about to let him off the hook that easily. "I'm asking you. You answer first."

"I don't know what she told you," Zachary quickly regained his composure and assured her, "But Winona, I wouldn't joke about my health. If there was a problem, I'd get it treated. We don't know if Maeve is a friend or foe, so don't believe everything she says."

Winona felt reassured by his words, thinking maybe she was just being overly sensitive.

She had planned to go home after lunch, but feeling lazy after eating, she decided to wait for Zachary to finish his work so they could leave together.

With her presence, Zachary's work pace visibly increased. Dylan looked at her with gratitude, like she was a savior, and kept bringing her snacks and treats, afraid she might leave and take the good luck with her.

He decided to put a picture of Mrs. Bailey on Mr. Bailey's desk tomorrow, hoping it would make him eager to finish work quickly.

Winona was about to chat with Rebecca, who was having lunch with Anthony. Suddenly, Rebecca exclaimed, "No way!"

Anthony almost dropped his fork, startled by her outburst. "What's wrong?"

"With my years of experience, I can tell Maeve has feelings for Zachary."

Anthony was silent.

"If you were in a desperate situation and a handsome, young, rich man saved you, making your bullies look like fools, wouldn't you fall for him? Wouldn't you want to keep such a powerful man for yourself?"

Anthony couldn't relate. He had never been desperate, bullied, or humiliated.

"No," he said simply.

Rebecca was frustrated. She needed someone to validate her thoughts, but Anthony was just ruining her mood. She waved her hand dismissively. "Forget it. People and animals can't understand each other's feelings."

She decided to talk to Winona instead.

Anthony put down his utensils and wiped his mouth, adopting a serious tone. "Didn't your English teacher ever tell you that if people can't relate, it's because your analogy is terrible?"

Rebecca felt a headache coming on. "Mr. Lewis, please, just let me live a little longer."

Anthony reached across the table, holding her hand. "Isn't this our first official date?"

"What are you doing?"

The sudden shift from serious to romantic caught her off guard.

Anthony smiled and took her phone. "As someone who's been dating for months but only now going on a first date, can I make a small request?"

If he had criticized her directly, she would have left. But his words made her feel guilty. "Sure, ask away. One, two, three, whatever."

Anthony smiled, careful not to overdo it. "During our date, your time belongs to me."

"But how..." She wanted to warn Winona about Maeve.

"And besides, what couple doesn't text or call others during a date?"

Before she could finish, Anthony interrupted, "Who knows when our next date will be?"

Rebecca felt a pang of sympathy. Looking at Anthony, he seemed more like a poor guy begging for attention than the powerful Mr. Lewis. "Okay, okay, my time is yours. So, what do we do next?"

Realizing she had been tricked, she didn't want to admit she had been fooled. That would be too embarrassing.

Anthony pretended not to notice her inner conflict. "How about a movie? Or we could walk around the mall upstairs?"

There were plenty of entertainment options upstairs.

Rebecca glanced at the ads above the atrium and pointed. "How about an escape room?"

Anthony had never played, but he knew what it was. After a moment of thought, he said, "Let's try the claw machine. I'm afraid you might get stuck in the escape room."
