Chapter 381 The Infatuated Zachary
Sarah had just brought breakfast upstairs when Zachary came down. His leg injury didn't seem to bother him much. He wasn't limping, just moving slower, which made him look more laid-back.
He sat at the dining table, sipping water, and asked, "Heading back to Regal Oaks later?"
Winona replied, "I have to work overtime."
On Monday, there was a free appraisal event at the city museum, and she was one of the invited appraisers. Her main job was to help private collectors authenticate artifacts and teach them how to better preserve these cultural relics.
There was a meeting in the afternoon and dinner together in the evening.
Zachary's face turned serious immediately, "But today is the weekend."
Winona said, "That's why it's called overtime."
Zachary thought for a moment, "How about having dinner with me tonight?"
"No, I've arranged to have dinner with some industry veterans tonight. It wouldn't be appropriate not to go. In today's society, networking is crucial. No matter how experienced I am in artifact restoration, I'm still young and need to pay my respects to the seniors in the field. But I can have breakfast with you," she said.
Zachary glanced at the time, it was already past eleven. He corrected her, "It's lunch now."
From a selfish perspective, he definitely wanted Winona to stay by his side all the time, but he couldn't interfere with her work. It was something she loved and had always pursued.
Being together should mean supporting each other, not restricting each other.
Zachary asked, "Where are you having dinner? I'll pick you up afterward."
Winona instinctively wanted to refuse. Since her mother passed away, she had gotten used to not relying on others. She had been independent for many years and hadn't yet adapted to having a boyfriend. Seeing Zachary's gaze, she said, "Okay, the address isn't set yet. I'll send it to you once it's decided."
Zachary was satisfied, and his wound seemingly didn't hurt as much.
After breakfast, Winona was ready to leave. She was worried about traffic and wanted to allow enough time. She couldn't let a bunch of seniors wait for her. "I'm leaving now. Although the snake that bit you wasn't venomous, try not to walk too much. The wound needs time to heal."
These words were quite normal, but to Zachary, they were as sweet as any endearment.
As she turned to leave, Zachary grabbed her, "You haven't applied the medicine to me yet."
Winona looked down at his hand holding hers and replied, "You missed your chance last night."
Zachary thought she was referring to the fact that they had slept together last night, but he hadn't done anything, fearing she might again misunderstand his sexual capability. Although he had indeed seemed impotent for the past three years, he explained, "We don't have any condoms left at home. If we did it, you'd have to take medicine, and taking too much of that is bad for your health..."
Winona interrupted him and said, "The snake bit your leg last night. You should have let it bite your hand. Then you'd have injuries on all four limbs, and I'd definitely apply the medicine for you."
Winona added, "You can walk, move, and eat now. You even look like you can jump. Apply it yourself."
Winona yanked her hand out of his grasp. Zachary hadn't held on tightly, so it was easy for her to pull away. The warm, soft touch disappeared, leaving his palm cold.
A sense of loss rose in his heart. Before he could recover, Winona leaned down and kissed him on the cheek, saying, "I'm leaving. I left your card in the room. Please stop putting black cards in my wallet. Mobile payments are becoming more popular and convenient, so I'd rather use mobile payments."
Zachary fell silent.
By the time he came to his senses, Winona was already leaving.
Sarah, who had been watching from the kitchen, shook her head. She hadn't realized before how infatuated Zachary was. Fortunately, Winona was a kind, principled, and grounded woman. Otherwise, Zachary might have been deceived.
Halfway through her drive, Winona received a call from Eva. Because of the "Treasure Appraisal" charity event, many people had been contacting her recently. Since she hadn't saved many of their numbers, she had turned off the "block unknown numbers" setting.
"Winona..." As soon as she heard Eva's voice, she hung up quickly. No matter what Eva's intentions were, she wasn't going to engage.
Eva looked at her phone, furious, and swept everything off the table. She had tried calling Winona with over a hundred different numbers in the past few days, but all had been rejected and blocked. Her messages went unanswered.
The five million dollars she had offered hadn't achieved anything. Instead, she had been humiliated. Thinking about those cards made her chest hurt with anger.
As a daughter of Turner Family, she had been pampered all her life and never financially strained. She didn't even have that many black cards. Why should Winona, that bitch, have them?
The more Eva thought about it, the angrier she got. Zachary was meant to be her man.
"Winona, you bitch." She glared at her phone screen, her eyes filled with malice.
She dialed another number.
Time was running out. She had heard that the family had already come to Dreamopolis and were discussing the wedding date with his father.
The call connected, and a woman's voice answered, "Who is this?"
Just from the voice, Eva could sense the tension and wariness.
Eva rolled her eyes and silently mouthed, "You worthless waste."
She said, "Layla, are you really okay with watching Winona live a life of luxury? She was the one being chased by loan sharks like a dog. Why should she turn things around and become Zachary's wife? If the Sullivan family were to choose a daughter to marry him, it should be you. Why should Winona, an illegitimate child with an unknown father, get that?"
Eva had thoroughly investigated Layla and easily played on her jealousy. "When she goes out now, she casually pulls out several black cards. You know what kind of people can get those cards, right?"
Unexpectedly, Layla wasn't swayed, "Were you the one who had me beaten and my ribs broken?"
