Chapter 426 Finding a Father for the Child
The two stood face to face, and Winona caught a whiff of Nicholas's cologne. Zachary never wore cologne; his scent was always from the incense in his closet.
She looked up, meeting Nicholas's gaze. At first, she thought they were about seventy to eighty percent similar, but up close, without the distraction of clothes and demeanor, their faces were almost identical.
Winona stared at his handsome face and couldn't help but reach out, wanting to brush the hair off his forehead.
But before her fingers could touch his face, Nicholas grabbed her hand and said, "Miss Sullivan."
Nicholas's Adam's apple bobbed, his voice low and rough. "I'm Nicholas."
As Winona heard his words, the deep affection in her eyes slowly turned to confusion. Her once clear eyes seemed to cloud over, lost and desolate.
"I know I look a bit like the late Mr. Bailey. So, I understand you'd mistake me for him. But I'm not him. I'm not interested in being anyone's stand-in," Nicholas said, placing his hand lightly on Winona's belly. Because his actions were very subtle and Winona's attention was entirely focused on his harsh words, she didn't notice his behavior. "Even if you're as beautiful as a fairy, I have no interest in a pregnant woman."
Winona tilted her head back, smiling faintly, her eyes full of undisguised arrogance as she said, "Are you really the youngest son of the Ramsey Family?"
"If you don't believe me, you can have someone check. I was weak as a kid and lived with my grandparents in the countryside of Eirinda. Everyone there knows me. I went to elementary and middle school in Eirinda, and some classmates there can vouch for me."
"What about college?"
She might not even recognize her elementary and middle school classmates if she passed them on the street now.
"Sorry, I'm a poor student. Never went to college."
Winona was shocked.
Did anyone belittle themselves like this?
He was now the head of the Ramsey Group, after all. Didn't he care about his image? Even if he wasn't good at studying, he could at least come up with an excuse.
Seeing her still staring at his face, Nicholas pursed his lips and continued with a cold tone, "When you ask, you have to use my nickname. I was called Paws before I was brought back to the Ramsey Family."
Winona fell silent.
This liar, even if he had a nickname, it would be used privately. His real name would be used in school.
Seeing what she was thinking, Nicholas explained, "There were few students in the countryside, and we didn't care about such things."
Winona suspected Nicholas was lying on purpose to prevent her from having any improper thoughts about him.
She temporarily suppressed the urge to pull his hair. "Mr. Ramsey, you look so much like my ex-husband. In a city of millions like Dreamopolis, it's surely fate that we met. Why don't you be my boyfriend?"
Nicholas looked at her coldly. He wasn't wearing a suit today, nor a tie, and his collar was open. But he still tugged at his collar. "Be your boyfriend?"
Winona said, "Yeah, I need a dad for this baby. Come on, drop your pants."
Nicholas clenched his jaw, looking like he wanted to strangle her.
He snapped, "Your ex just died, and you're already hunting for the next one?"
Winona frowned at the word 'died,' but she knew someone missing at sea for three months was as good as gone. If Nicholas wasn't Zachary, then he might really be...
"People need to move on. He wouldn't want me stuck in grief."
Even if she didn't date or remarry, she needed to face the future positively and optimistically.
That was Winona's true thought.
Nicholas misunderstood, thinking she wanted to start a new relationship. He pursed his lips, his hand on the metal buckle of his belt, seemingly afraid Winona would get impatient and undress him herself.
Nicholas said, "I heard you and Mr. Bailey had a great relationship. Even if he's now..."
He paused before continuing, "Miss Sullivan, even if his fate is currently unknown, you should at least wait for a while before accepting another man."
Only a few close people knew about her reconciliation with Zachary. To outsiders, they were still exes, with the only connection being the nonexistent baby in her womb.
So how did Nicholas know they had a good relationship?
Winona stared at him, deliberately provoking, "Who said we had a good relationship? If we did, we wouldn't have gotten divorced."
Nicholas's face was cold as he stared back at her. "As for being your boyfriend, I'm afraid I have to decline, Miss Sullivan. I have a physiological condition related to sex."
Winona asked, "What's the matter? Medical science is so advanced now..."
"I'm experiencing problems with my sexual function," Nicholas interrupted, recalling the invitation he had seen in the trash can. His voice grew colder as he said, "Don't be easily deceived by men. Those male models, they look glamorous and handsome on the surface, but behind the scenes, they're all supported by rich people. Do you really think they're all kind and considerate? They've all been trained to cater to wealthy women's preferences."
Nicholas glanced at her flat belly as he said, "You're pregnant. At least give the baby some good prenatal education. Don't be so shallow."
Winona was stunned by the scolding. By the time she reacted, Nicholas had already opened the door to leave the lounge.
She remembered her purpose for tonight and reached out to pull Nicholas's hair.
Nicholas seemed to have eyes on the back of his head. Before Winona's hand could touch him, he dodged.
Nicholas said, "Miss Sullivan, if you don't want me to call the police, please behave and don't touch me."
The lounge door opened, and the male model who had asked for Winona's number earlier was standing at the door, still in his swimwear, his body quite eye-catching. He first looked at Nicholas, then past him to Winona inside, smiling brightly. "Miss Sullivan, can I add you on WhatsApp?"
