Chapter 285: The Davis family isn't as great as you think

Zachary pressed his lips together and stayed silent.

The meal ended in this strangely quiet atmosphere.

As Winona got up to pay the bill, Zachary interjected. "Dylan already covered it."

He hadn't intended to hold her hand initially—he felt it was beyond his right, knowing Winona would likely resist. But now, holding it, he found he didn't want to let go. "The night’s nice; let's go for a walk."

Winona glanced skeptically at the pitch-black sky, heavy with an impending chill. It felt anything but inviting.

"You go ahead, I'm not interested," she replied, feeling weary from the day’s events, longing for a hot bath and the mindless comfort of TV shows.

As she was about to pull her hand out of Zachary's grasp, she heard him ask, "Don't you want to know who in A City had ill intentions toward you?"

Her curiosity piqued, Winona paused, her hand momentarily still in his. "You found out?"

"Yes." Sensing an opening, Zachary held her hand a bit more firmly. "Take a walk with me, and I'll tell you."

Rodolfo had already whispered a name when he saw her into the car, but she wasn't certain of its truth. Winona hesitated but found herself curious about Zachary's take. "Let go first."

With lingering reluctance, Zachary released her soft, delicate hand.

Winona asked, "Where are we walking to?"

Zachary gestured toward a bustling area. His aim wasn’t shopping; it didn’t matter where they went as long as he had her company.

The street was congested, teeming with people. Children dashed around with toys, weaving through the throng. Instinctively, Zachary reached out to shield Winona, creating a protective space around her without overstepping boundaries.

As time went by, the crowd thickened, and the music blared louder. In the distance, someone appeared to be live-streaming a dance performance, drawing a curious audience.

Zachary, however, was indifferent to the external clamor, his focus unwaveringly on Winona, ensuring her safety. "Winona, whatever Austin can do, I can do too. I can join you for junk food, and I can also pick out fish bones for you. Don’t fall for him. The Robinsons isn’t as great as you think. Austin’s parents are government officials, full of rigid rules. You won’t fit in..."

"I know I didn't do well before. As a husband, I wasn't responsible. As a partner, I lacked consideration..." Zachary paused, taking a deep breath before continuing. "Maybe I didn't always choose my words well, but I'll work hard to be a better husband from now on. I won't let you suffer anymore."

Winona was silent for a few seconds before speaking. "Zachary..."

Barely had she uttered his name when Zachary gently placed a finger over her lips. He gave a self-deprecating smile. "Enough, let's talk business. In A City, did you cross someone from a Turner?"

Hearing that surname again confirmed Winona's suspicions. It was indeed someone from The Turner Family targeting her. However, she hadn't the faintest idea who with that surname she could have offended. She didn't know anyone named Turner, let alone have any reason to antagonize them.

If she hadn't met any Turners, it was likely they were gunning for her due to her mother's past.

Zachary's brow furrowed, sensing that Winona was holding something back.

Before he could press further, someone in the crowd shouted, "It's raining!"

Raindrops began to fall, quickly transforming into a deluge that scattered the onlookers. Winona, disinterested in shopping to begin with and now having what she came for, dashed off. If it weren't for Zachary's long strides, he might not have kept up.

Dylan, seemingly out of nowhere, appeared with an umbrella and handed it to Zachary.

The rain rapidly intensified, drenching their thin clothes. Zachary unfurled the umbrella, shielding Winona completely.

Her apartment, conveniently located next to the food street, was a short sprint away. Once inside, Winona shook off the water droplets clinging to her. "I can go up by myself. Thanks for the umbrella."

Zachary closed the umbrella and gestured to his right shoulder. His light-colored shirt was wet and slightly see-through, revealing his well-defined muscles. "I'm soaked because of you. If you're going to thank me, at least be sincere."

He seemed quite uncomfortable with his drenched attire, frowning. "I'm going to take a shower at your place. Dylan is getting clothes from the car and he should be back soon."

Winona was on the verge of retorting when a voice rang out, "Miss Sullivan."

Two people emerged from the shadows.

Seeing the face of the person in front, Winona's eyes widened in surprise.
