Chapter 677 I Am Not an AI

Zachary frowned, "Winona still hasn't come out?"

He had been guessing before, but now he was sure: the last person Maeve saw before she died was Winona.

Rebecca snapped, "It's just the three of us here. Can't you tell if she's out or not?"

She had been completely thrown off when she was called to the police station. It wasn't until she finished giving her statement that she learned Maeve was dead. She was about to inform Winona when she saw her and Zachary getting out of the police car together.

Rebecca eyed Zachary suspiciously, "You didn't know about this beforehand? Aren't you supposed to be in the loop about everything? How could you miss something this big?"

Zachary glanced at her, "I can't know everything, especially stuff that doesn't concern me. I'm human, not a computer."

He checked his watch, his face dark and unreadable.

"Maeve's last visitor was Winona," Zachary said to Anthony.

Anthony asked, "You knew this already?"

"Not exactly. I found out when I went to see Alton at noon. He told me. How long can a suspect in a criminal case be held?"

Anthony immediately understood his intention, "The initial hearing will be held within 48 hours. Based on the evidence, they'll decide whether to release or keep her."

Rebecca sighed in relief, "Since you knew, are you prepared? Is Winona coming out soon?"

Zachary replied, "I didn't tell her."

Rebecca's relief turned into anxiety again, and she held her breath, feeling worse than before. "You knew..."

Her voice rose in agitation, and she glanced around at the nearby officers, lowering her voice, "Why didn't you tell her? You just asked about the maximum detention period. Are you suspecting Winona and planning to send her to jail for revenge?"

Seeing her getting more worked up, Anthony quickly pulled her aside, "This is a criminal case. What preparation can be done? Winona was kidnapped last night. She wasn't at the scene when Maeve died. If she hears the news and isn't shocked, the police will be even more suspicious."

Anthony, being a top-notch lawyer, quickly convinced Rebecca, though she remained stubborn, "Couldn't she have found out later?"

"If the police ask why you specifically inquired about her, why not anyone else at the party?"

An hour later, under social pressure, the judge worked efficiently, and the initial hearing concluded. Anthony went to handle the bail paperwork.

As soon as Winona came out, Zachary and Rebecca rushed to her, both speaking at once, "Winona, it's okay now."

"Winona, don't be afraid. The police will clear your name. Maeve..."

Rebecca wanted to give Winona a comforting hug, but Zachary blocked her way. She couldn't even see Winona without standing on tiptoe.

Though she disliked Maeve, she felt a sense of respect for the deceased. Speaking ill of the dead seemed tasteless, so she swallowed her words.

But she wasn't one to hold back, so she directed her frustration at Zachary, "Why are you blocking me?"

Anthony walked over and gently pulled Rebecca's sleeve, "Why are you always so agitated?"

Rebecca glared at him, speaking through gritted teeth, "Anthony, we're breaking up. Winona, I'll call you later."

With Zachary around, she knew she couldn't have a proper conversation with Winona. She couldn't even see her properly, let alone talk. Winona must be scared after everything, and though Rebecca wanted to comfort her, she knew Winona probably preferred Zachary's support.

Rebecca left without hesitation, ignoring Anthony.

Before she reached the police station door, Anthony caught up, "Rebecca."

Rebecca spoke quickly, determined not to listen, "Reba is your dog, currently in your doghouse. Stop calling me Reba."

A low chuckle came from behind.

Rebecca realized her mistake. Her name had 'Rebe' in it, and her relatives called her 'Rebecca.' She had inadvertently insulted herself.

"Stop following me."

Annoyed.

Anthony's voice carried a smile, "Rebecca."

Rebecca's head throbbed at the sound of 'Rebe.' She stopped abruptly, turning to face him, "Anthony, don't you understand? Stop calling me 'Rebecca,' and stop following me."

She stopped so suddenly that Anthony, close behind, couldn't halt in time and bumped into her.

He was fine, but Rebecca stumbled back several steps.

Anthony reached out, pulling her into his arms, "Alright, I'm sorry."

Despite being in a public place, he showed no hesitation, holding her close. Many people at the station knew Anthony, and they watched the scene with amusement.

Rebecca buried her head in his chest, not moving.

Anthony asked, "Feeling better?"

"No, I'm embarrassed. Can't you see everyone staring at us?" Her muffled voice came from his chest, "Let's go."

Rebecca unlocked her car, and Anthony opened the passenger door, sitting inside. She stared at him, incredulous, "What are you doing?"

Anthony replied, "I came with you. You need to drive me back."

Rebecca had been with Anthony when she got the call from the police station, so they came together. Having him there made her feel less intimidated during the interrogation.

Thinking of this, her attitude softened, "We're not going the same way. I'll call you a cab?"
