Chapter 511 He Lied Again
Winona figured Zachary was hinting at her recent loss and how her running around might raise eyebrows. She said, "I'm just heading down to grab a bite. I'll bundle up, and no one will think twice."
Her back was killing her, and she couldn't reach to massage it, so she just wanted to stretch her legs.
Seeing the hopeful look in her eyes, Zachary was at a loss for words. "Just eat and come back when you're done," he said.
"Okay." Winona nodded quickly.
She was still in the same clothes from the morning. Luckily, Otis had kidnapped her right after she arrived, so she hadn't even taken off her coat. Otherwise, in this cold weather, she wouldn't have been able to go out.
Zachary grabbed the coat from the rack and draped it over her. The coat, which reached his knees, almost covered her ankles. Winona was bundled up tightly.
There weren't many patients in the private hospital, and not many nurses on duty at night. Winona kept her head down, with the lower half of her face almost buried in the coat, so no one recognized her.
Zachary's phone kept buzzing.
He usually made direct calls for important stuff, and work-related documents and pictures were mostly sent via email. He didn't have many friends, let alone group chats. The frequent buzzing suggested that the other party had something urgent.
Seeing that Zachary had no intention of answering, Winona said, "If you have something to do, go ahead. I don't need company here. I'll be discharged tomorrow."
"Ignore it; it's just Samuel being a love-struck fool," Zachary said, glancing at his phone. "He's been unable to go home for the past few days, and since he's not doing well, he doesn't want anyone else to be happy."
Winona asked, "Why?"
Zachary suddenly remembered that she had said she liked Samuel's type before, and his nerves instantly tensed up. Zachary stared at her face, trying to discern her intentions. "Are you very curious about him?"
She just asked why. Why was Zachary so agitated?
Zachary continued, "Julia dumped him. Now every time she sees him, she talks about divorce. He's afraid to go home and can only stay at the office, spreading his bad mood around."
Winona had heard the name many times but had never met her. Julia had never appeared at their gatherings, and no one else had asked about her, as if it was a common occurrence.
It was also possible that she wasn't around when Winona was, as Winona hadn't participated much in their private gatherings.
Winona asked curiously, "Julia and Mr. Anderson don't get along?"
Zachary remarked, "It's not just bad; it's pure hatred. If Julia weren't so intent on saving herself, she would have taken him straight to hell by now."
Why did he sound so gleeful?
Winona gave him a suspicious look. "Are you secretly in love with Julia? Why are you so excited about their divorce?"
Zachary glanced at Winona indifferently. "If Samuel heard you say that, the Bailey Group's new project would need financing by tomorrow."
He continued, "Julia hates him because he was too much of a playboy before. He brought it on himself."
Winona said, "Why do I feel like you're using this as an excuse to badmouth him?"
Rebecca was a gossip queen. She knew who was involved with whom, which families were forming alliances, who dumped whom, and who was a playboy. But she had never mentioned any gossip about Samuel. When others talked about Samuel, they mostly praised him for being upright.
"No," Zachary replied firmly, meeting Winona's gaze without a hint of guilt, and there was no sign of lying on his face.
However, he had a history of lying, so he wasn't trustworthy.
Zachary said, "Don't be fooled by Samuel. He's not someone you can rely on for life."
"If you want me to believe you, introduce me to Julia someday." Winona's eyes curved into a smile, teasing him on purpose.
Yet she was genuinely curious about what kind of woman could tame a man as noble and esteemed as Samuel.
"No way." Zachary refused without thinking. "You can't learn from her; she'll lead you astray."
Julia's theories were not something Winona should hear. Zachary's pursuit of her was already difficult enough; he didn't want to face a hell-level challenge like Samuel.
Winona rolled her eyes and said irritably, "You really are lying to me."
Zachary fell silent.
He had to choose between introducing them or admitting he had lied again. He decisively chose the latter.
