Chapter 251 I Was Her Relative
Winona remained seated without moving, while Rebecca had already jumped to the next table and flipped someone over. "Austin, you scoundrel, can't I just ask a question? I asked in front, and I felt betrayed from behind. Winona thought I was in cahoots with you."
Winona, known as resolute, was speechless.
Austin waved away Rebecca's hand, pulled out the chair next to Winona, and sat down generously. "When it comes to pursuing a woman, it's more sincere to do it yourself. Alright, you've introduced me. You can leave now, go to the next street, and buy a box of pizza to bring back."
Rebecca glared at him. "It would be better if you asked yourself."
"You don't understand. Men appearing out of nowhere too often can be annoying, so there needs to be an opportunity. Since you've set the stage here, of course, I had to come out."
"And do you know why it's popular to send love letters during school instead of directly stopping someone to ask?"
"Why?"
"It's not embarrassing if you get rejected. Just act like you don't know and continue pursuing next time."
Rebecca gritted her teeth and made a gesture of approval. "When it comes to thick skin, it's definitely you."
As she turned to leave, Austin stopped her. "I was just teasing you. Did you really think I'd send you to the next street to buy food? Even if I wanted to stall, it wouldn't be that quick. Sit down. The waiter is bringing the food."
"Isn't it because the millstone hasn't been removed yet?" Rebecca sat down with a cold smile. "Because as soon as I leave, Winona will repeat the words she just rejected. Do you believe that?"
This time, it was Austin's turn to make a gesture of approval towards her. "When it comes to understanding, it's definitely you."
Winona indeed had this in mind, hence she did not intervene to stop Rebecca from leaving. Discussing such private matters in public was generally frowned upon, but silence was even less desirable in this situation.
With ten years of friendship with Austin, she didn't want things to turn unpleasant, but some things needed to be clarified early on. "Austin..."
Austin interrupted her, "I was sitting with my back to you just now. I even heard you sigh. There's no need to repeat."
Though Rebecca didn't want to meddle in her best friend's affairs, she couldn't help but want to see how the love drama would unfold. "Winona, since you're alone now, just let him pursue you. You're so beautiful. It's abnormal for not many men to be around you, and relationships need more interaction to develop."
"Hi, Miss Davis." Rebecca was racking her brains to play matchmaker for Austin when a voice suddenly sounded behind her, startling her. She turned around to see Dylan standing behind her, looking very tired.
"Miss Davis, you've at least taken Mr. Bailey's ten thousand dollars for matchmaking. You should ensure the service works. It's only been a short while, and you've already changed your match? If this gets out, who will dare to hire you for matchmaking in the future?"
Rebecca looked puzzled at the man behind Dylan. "Wasn't the hundred thousand from Zachary intended as money for a name change? When did it turn into payment for matchmaking? Please refrain from tarnishing my reputation with baseless accusations."
She hadn't even intended to accept it but couldn't turn back, so she was forced to accept.
Zachary, dressed in a black suit with a tie that only a formal outfit would wear, had extremely cold and firm facial features.
His gaze fell on Winona, his expression heavy, completely concealing the image of him muttering to himself with a rabbit in her apartment last night.
He said, "Doesn't the woman's family give the fee? If you accepted it, doesn't that mean you acknowledge me as her family?"
Rebecca was speechless.
"You are impressive. Your comprehension skills are definitely not something that a person can teach. If Austin is thick-skinned, then you are shameless."
She was so annoyed that she sneered repeatedly. "The woman's parents give title fee. Are you Winona's dad or mom? In the future, should I call you uncle or aunt when we meet?"
If it weren't for being in a public place, Rebecca really wanted to curse Zachary with different dirty words.
Zachary glanced at Dylan beside him.
Dylan instantly understood, answering Rebecca's question while quickly running to Winona's side. "Miss Davis and our Mrs. Bailey are besties. How can Mr. Bailey take advantage of you like this?"
He pulled out the chair on the other side of Winona. "Mrs. Bailey, it's fate that we meet. Let's dine together at a table. There's no space left."
It was closing time now. The restaurant's environment was decent, and the prices were moderate. Many people who didn't want to cook chose to eat here before heading back.
Glancing around, one could observe a full house with no vacant seats in sight.
Winona remarked, "Mr. Bailey's stature seems more befitting for the adjacent second floor."
In a quiet, upscale restaurant with few customers, it was perfectly suited to his reserved nature. Dylan responded, "Isn't it because of you? Where you are, Mr. Bailey naturally follows. Even if you were dining on the street, Mr. Bailey would be right there with you."
Such words were undeniably laced with genuine admiration.
Not to mention Winona; even Zachary couldn't help but furrow his brow. "Did you work part-time at a male escort establishment last night? Why are you speaking so strangely?"
He walked over to the chair Dylan had pulled out and sat down. The table was round, and when he looked up, he met Austin's gaze.
Austin clicked his tongue. "It's not easy for a man to marry these days. It's one thing to compete with others, but to compete with someone who likes to stick to people is another."
Zachary nonchalantly raised his eyelids, dining for the first time in such a bustling restaurant. Naturally, his mood couldn't have been pleasant, and his words carried a sting.
"If I were you, I would certainly feel embarrassed to sit here. Everyone says they don't like you, yet you linger here like an unwavering piece of toffee, sticking to God knows what."
Arriving just in time to hear Austin's remark, he could easily infer the gist of it.
Rebecca looked visibly surprised. "I misspoke earlier. It is the rarest of gems that one truly loves, and you, my dear, are akin to a prickly pear, each thorn a warning. It might be wise to bid them farewell sooner rather than later, lest they engage in a futile clash while you risk being wounded prematurely."
Winona rose and headed to the front desk, their view obstructed from where they sat, assuming she had gone to the restroom.
Shortly after, Rebecca departed as well, leaving Austin, Zachary, and Dylan—three imposing figures—staring at a table laden with untouched dishes, each one uneasy under the scrutinizing gazes.
Primarily a battlefield between the first two, Dylan merely an accessory, fading into the background.
Ten minutes later, unable to contain himself, Dylan quipped, "Surely, Mrs. Bailey wouldn't have left directly? Oh, but it appears she has indeed made a discreet exit."
The first sentence began as a query, transitioning into a statement as he caught sight of Winona.
Carrying a bag of neatly packed leftover meals, Winona and Rebecca strolled towards the resting chairs across the street.
