Chapter 633 What If I Die

Winona said, "Hey, Ms. Harrington's here."

She said this as she walked towards Maeve at the door.

Maeve had just arrived, wearing a simple white dress and standing alone, looking a bit out of place in the bustling atmosphere.

Zachary frowned slightly, trying to hide his displeasure: "Did you invite her?"

"Yeah, when I picked her up from the hospital last time, I gave her an invite."

"Don't get too close to her."

Winona nudged him with her elbow, warning him, "She saved your life, at least try not to look so grim. There are so many people watching."

With that, she ignored Zachary and quickly walked over to Maeve. "Hey, Ms. Harrington."

Maeve visibly relaxed upon seeing Winona. She released her grip on her dress and handed Winona a box of homemade cookies. "I wasn't sure what to get you. You probably have everything you need, so I made these cookies myself. The packaging isn't great, but they taste pretty good. I hope you don't mind."

It's common knowledge that you don't give homemade food to someone you're not close to, especially when you have a gambling father and have worked part-time at a nightclub. Maeve should know better. But she still gave the cookies, which she made herself. Maybe she really is naive.

Winona smiled as she accepted the box. "Of course not, thank you. This is the most thoughtful gift I've received tonight."

She handed the cookies to Sarah. "Sarah, could you put these in my room? I'll eat them later when I'm hungry."

Maeve watched as Sarah took the cookies away, then slowly looked back at Winona.

Winona said, "Let me take you to get something to eat."

Meanwhile, Matthew walked up to Zachary, frowning and speaking in a cold tone. "When did Winona get so close to your savior?"

Zachary glanced at him. "Is everything arranged?"

"Do you have to be in such a rush? The other side has been planning for years, and you want to uproot them in a short time. Aren't you afraid of alerting them?"

Zachary's expression tightened. "I don't have much time left."

His tone was calm, but Matthew was shocked. He turned sharply to look at Zachary. "What do you mean?"

He hadn't looked closely before, and the warm lighting in the living room was flattering. But now, he noticed Zachary's pallor, the dark circles under his eyes, and the exhaustion that couldn't be hidden. "What did the doctor say?"

"Not good. I'm still undergoing treatment."

But the situation wasn't improving; it was getting worse. The doctors couldn't predict the outcome, so they were taking it one step at a time.

Zachary didn't go into detail, but his appearance and condition suggested that things were grim. "Have you seen other doctors?"

"Yes, several. I even consulted doctors while traveling in Aetheria. There's no specific medication for my condition."

He had planned to tell her everything after her competition, letting her decide what to do. But the diagnosis was so bleak that he changed his mind.

Knowing how helpless and scared one feels when there's nothing they can do, he didn't want her to experience that.

If something happened to him, she would be sad, but it would be a one-time thing. Telling her now would be like torturing her slowly with a dull knife.

He couldn't bear it.

Matthew looked at Winona, who was eating with Maeve. "Does Winona know?"

"I haven't told her. So many doctors are at a loss; telling her would only make her worry."

"Is that fair to her? Are you planning to marry her with your failing health, then leave her to face a man who suddenly forgets her? But Winona loves you so much. Even if you forget her, she'll stay by your side, helping you regain those memories. Even if you can't, you'll create new, unforgettable ones."

Matthew never imagined he'd have to tell his rival how much the girl he couldn't win over loved him. He must have been a terrible person in a past life to deserve this.

Zachary said, "What if I don't just forget, but die? The doctors can't predict what will happen."

Matthew said, "Damn it!"

Rarely did someone as composed as him feel the urge to curse. But just then, someone came to toast, and he had to suppress his anger, forcing a smile for the social niceties.

After the person left, the anger had dissipated, and he could only glare at Zachary. "Saying something nice won't kill you."

Zachary looked at Winona, who was glowing under the lights, with a face full of affection. They were a bit far apart, so he had to squint to see her expression. "Before my body completely fails, I need to clean out the rats hiding in the sewer."

Matthew didn't hold back, pouring cold water on his plan. "There are so many people fighting rats worldwide, but rats haven't gone extinct. As long as there are people, there will be conflict. The Bailey Group is a big piece of cake. Even at this party, who doesn't want to take you down and grab a piece?"

"At least it won't be like last time, leaving a mess for Winona to clean up, forcing her to quit her favorite job," Zachary said, his face darkening.

With that, he ignored Matthew and walked straight towards Winona.

Winona was busy filling her plate and didn't notice Zachary approaching. Maeve, feeling out of place, was looking around and saw him first. "Mr. Bailey."

Zachary nodded politely to her and naturally took the plate from Winona's hands. "Is it good? Mom hired the chef from your favorite restaurant."

"Yes," Winona said, recognizing the taste immediately. "Dad is so lucky to have Mom, who takes care of everything."

"You're the only one in our family who gets this treatment. As for Dad, he just eats whatever Mom eats."

There were three people in this space, but Maeve felt like a lifeless stump, unable to insert herself into their conversation. She glanced at Zachary and met his gaze.

Maeve's eyes showed a hint of something deeper, and she looked towards a small, secluded balcony in the corner of the living room. "Mr. Bailey, Winona, you two chat. I'll go take a look around."
