Chapter 245 When Things Go Wrong
Winona's gaze followed the man's arm up to his head, his hair luxuriant indeed.
Zachary pursed his lips, feeling that her gaze was somewhat benevolent.
He frowned. "Why are you looking at me like that?"
Winona said, "You look handsome."
Zachary failed to discern her underlying implications, assuming she was praising him. A hint of a smile tugged at his lips, but then he realized this might be his sole merit in Winona's eyes. The lifted corners of his lips faltered. "Do you simply not believe a word I say, believing only in your own truths from beginning to end?"
After thinking for a while, Winona analyzed with him. "You and I were just casual acquaintances before we got married, right?"
By saying that, she was overestimating her relationship with him. If they met by chance, and Matthew wasn't there, they would almost pass each other by like strangers. The only time their paths intersected was during a phase when writing love letters became popular in the class. She, holding onto a love letter she had meticulously pondered over for a week, roamed beneath the building where Matthew frequented and coincidentally stumbled upon Zachary alone. Consequently, she handed over the letter to Zachary, enlisting his help in its delivery.
This day lasted for a month. Actually, only four letters were written in total. Finally, Zachary opened his noble mouth to her."Do you really like Matthew?"
After receiving a positive answer, he sneered at her. "Matthew doesn't like a college girl who hasn't fully developed yet."
The brief 'friendship' between the two was declared shattered, not only broken but also left in a rather strained state.
"You are aware of the situation after marriage as well. Except for the initial two months when you came home every day due to helping me with debt issues, later on, you moved to an apartment near the Bailey Group. Coming back only two or three times a week, often late, and just going to sleep directly upon arrival. We slept with distance between us on the same bed. As for the Bailey Group, I reckon even the security guard's dog knew you didn't like me. After all, most of the meals I ordered ended up in its belly from your trash can. Given this scenario, how can you make me believe you ever liked me?"
She gazed at him. Though she didn't articulate it explicitly, her eyes clearly conveyed, 'Have you lost your mind?'
Zachary was speechless and furrowed his brow, said in an unpleasant tone, "You have a good memory."
"People with bad memories can't get into top universities in the country. Even if Fiona wronged you, you should refrain from such self-abandonment. Do not distress yourself by pursuing a woman who does not reciprocate your affections. Those times you came back late at night and found me awake, I wasn't waiting for you. I was working to meet deadlines. So, even if we really got back together, you would be disappointed."
"What does this have to do with Fiona?"
Winona had not intended to speak too directly. However, as he seemed unable to grasp subtle cues, she casted a tender glance at him. "Are you feeling wronged because she cheated on you?"
"I understand that you're likely feeling unsettled right now." Men in these matters inevitably exhibit hints of possessiveness, especially someone like Zachary, groomed as the epitome of excellence since childhood. "But at that time, you were married, too."
Zachary interjected, "I know."
Winona was momentarily taken aback. "What?"
"I've always been aware of her affairs with other men abroad." He hadn't delved into it. However, as he was at the helm of a family media company and quite a few people knew his relationship with Fiona, some information inevitably trickled to his ears. "What else would you like to know? Or what else do you wish to inquire about? Let's address it all today."
Winona had no interest in prying into other people's private affairs. Even if she was hostile to Fiona, she had never thought of kicking her while she was down. "If you must find a woman to prove your charm, go and find the girl you confessed to before but failed. Pursue her. Maybe it'll work out. Her thoughts might be different from when she was in college."
She remembered when Matthew advised her not to marry Zachary. He said Zachary had a girl he liked and even confessed to her, but she rejected him.
Zachary's expression suddenly became much lighter, inexplicably colder. He asked, "You really don't remember?"
Winona was puzzled. "Remember what?"
Gritting his teeth, the man said slowly, "Your freshman year's dance party."
At that time, he had already been interning at the company, seldom returning to school. It so happened that he had some business that day which required his presence back at the campus. Hearing about the freshmen and sophomores gathering in the auditorium, he found himself inexplicably drawn to attend.
He saw Winona half-drunk and half-asleep on the sofa, surrounded by a few "flies".
Zachary spoke slowly about his experience of being rejected.
Winona's curiosity was piqued. After a few seconds of silence, unable to resist, she inquired, "And then?"
"Then there was a power outage halfway through, and that's when I told you that I liked you."
"What did I say?" Winona's expression was hard to describe.
"Get lost."
Winona pursed her lips and asked cautiously, "Have you ever thought that you might have mistaken the person?"
"It's Impossible. As soon as the power went out, I walked towards you," Zachary firmly retorted. "Although the venue was very dark and I couldn't see people, at least I wouldn't forget your seat."
She fell silent for a few seconds. "As soon as the power went out, Rebecca pulled me away. She was afraid that if we were to leave later with a large crowd, there might be a stampede."
Zachary was Speechless.
The beam of the cellphone flashlight flickered erratically, the ambiance akin to that of a bar. It was his first time confessing to a girl. Feeling a tinge of nervousness, he barely looked at her face. The "get lost" amidst the clamor was merely a blurry bass note, indiscernible in tone.
Winona pushed open the door. "That is all in the past now. The reality shows that we are truly not compatible."
Even if there hadn't been a mistaken confession back then, she and he were not suited for each other. Otherwise, there wouldn't have been this failed three-year marriage.
Zachary probably hadn't recovered from the blow of confessing to the wrong person. He didn't stop her as he saw her cloding the door. When he realized it, Winona's figure was no longer at the door.
He took out his phone and called Samuel, "Come out for a drink."
"I'm asleep."
He didn't want to drink with someone who was head over heels in love.
"Night Club."
He hung up right after saying that.
Half an hour later, Samuel, with a displeased face, sat beside him. "In the middle of the night, why are you out drinking instead of sleeping? If you really have nothing to do, go back to your company to work overtime."
Zachary had already consumed several drinks, clutching his empty glass. "Have you ever had trouble getting an erection when facing Julia?"
The sip of wine that Samuel had just taken erupted ungracefully from his mouth. Fortunately, he managed to turn in time, sparing Zachary from any splatter. "Samuel, what do you mean by that? Do you have a problem when you face Winona?"
