Chapter 66 How Could It Be Her!
The next day was Saturday, and they didn't have to work. Winona slept until 11 o'clock before calling Rebecca to have lunch together.
After being infuriated by Zachary last night, she felt heavy in her chest today. It seemed that only by staying away from assholes could she live longer!
They agreed to have French cuisine, at a restaurant owned by one of Rebecca's clients. She wanted to show her support.
The grand entrance of the restaurant caught their attention. Rebecca looked at the two smartly dressed doormen standing straight and clutching her wallet. "Their food is outrageously expensive. If I didn't have to show support, I would definitely avoid it."
Winona chuckled softly, "If it weren't expensive, where would they get the money to buy antiques?"
"True," Rebecca held her hand, "Come on, let me show you my extravagant moment of splurging."
The restaurant was decorated with 360-degree panoramic glass. You could see inside clearly from the outside. Just as they approached the entrance, they both stopped in their tracks because Winona saw someone sitting in a window booth, causing her brows to furrow instantly.
Rebecca frowned as well and spoke with evident disgust, "When did she come back?"
Winona shook her head, indicating that she didn't know.
The person in the booth was her half-sister.
Her sister Layla, when her mother died in a car accident, her father hastily remarried, and the stepmother brought along a daughter two years younger than Winona.
Rebecca frowned in disgust. "Let's go. Hopefully, she won't come over to ruin our fun."
Rebecca purposely chose a seat far away from Layla, but the woman shamelessly approached them as soon as they had finished ordering, exclaiming, "Winona, is that really you?"
Winona couldn't be bothered with her, as they had never shared a sisterly bond. Three years ago, they had nearly ended up in a terrible fight. Now their encounter only left Winona feeling disgusted.
Rebecca had a quick temper and couldn't stand Layla's malicious, scheming, and materialistic nature. She immediately retorted without reservation, "Don't come here to show off your connections and relationships. Even if you have a thick skin, you should still pay attention to others' reactions. Can't you see that you're not welcome?"
"Connections and relationships?" Layla looked down on Winona disdainfully. "The money she has isn't worth as much as my jacket. Why would I need to show off to her?"
Since the fallout with Zachary, Winona hadn't worn any luxury brands. Firstly, it wasn't appropriate, and secondly, it wasn't convenient for work. But Layla had always loved luxury goods since she was young. She would wear Chanel even when she went to the market. In the past, when the Sullivan family was prosperous, her bags alone took up two entire walls.
Afterward, they went bankrupt, and creditors were everywhere. Even though Layla would hide and evade each day, she was unwilling to sell those items to pay off some of the debts. Later on, when they couldn't survive anymore, their father took them abroad, leaving Winona alone to face those ruthless creditors in the country!
Now, Winona looked at Layla's luxurious outfit and complex emotions welled up within her. It wasn't jealousy, just a sense of lament. Both of them were daughters of the Sullivan family, but she had to sacrifice her own marriage to repay the debts, while Layla could live carefree under their father's protection like a little princess.
Winona's attention finally fell onto the work badge hanging in front of Layla - Deputy Director of Mean Company.
So, not only did she return to the country, but she also secured a high position in the company.
Rebecca leaned on her hand, casting a disdainful gaze at Layla, as if she was looking at a pile of stinky garbage. "Of course, you don't need to show off. After all, you have a shameless and malicious father who ruined his own company, and then borrowed money at a high interest rate in his own daughter's name. Aren't you afraid of being struck by lightning?"
In this high-end French restaurant, people spoke softly and elegantly. Rebecca's unrestrained voice shocked a large area around them.
Many people turned their heads and whispered to each other.
Layla felt so embarrassed that she wished she could find a hole to bury herself in on the spot. "Rebecca, don't you have any manners? Making a scene in a place like this."
"Do you have any manners? Do you have any when you stand here like a desperate dog in heat, flaunting yourself? Should I tolerate your flaunting? You have two dads, huh?" Rebecca replied instantly.
Layla was absolutely speechless and her head was about to explode but with so many people watching, it would be too undignified to just leave it at that. Just as Layla was at a loss for what to do, a waiter approached and respectfully said to Rebecca, "Miss, we are a high-end restaurant, and we prohibit loud noises."
"High-end restaurant? You call this a high-end restaurant when you let a dog disrupt the customers' dining experience? We were sitting here peacefully, and she came running over barking at us. Instead of chasing away the dog, you ask me to lower my voice? Is this the kind of service your restaurant provides?" Rebecca exclaimed.
The waiter was taken aback by the scolding and looked at Layla, whose face was extremely displeased, and said, "Miss..."
Layla, full of anger, no longer tolerated anyone and said, "Get lost!"
After saying that, Layla turned her head and glared at Winona fiercely before walking away.
Rebecca sneered, "You can't let someone like her get away with it. Scold her every time you see her. If you reproach her enough, she'll be as timid as a mouse in your presence!"
Speaking of which, she hummed once more and added, "She dares to live a prosperous life by sucking your blood. Must have inherited it from her father, scum!"
Winona laughed, "I feel like you're scolding me too."
She had been in constant conflict with Layla since they were children. She had never been at advantage; all her difficulties came from her biased and mean-spirited father.
Rebecca regained her composure and awkwardly smiled, saying, "Freudian slip!"
The charity exhibition was on Friday and featured the recently unearthed Aveiro porcelain. It was said that the initiator of the exhibition was someone obsessed with them. The exhibition was held in New York's largest cultural center, with separate areas for selling and exhibiting.
As View Studio was responsible for temporarily storing these porcelain pieces, they had to have someone to be there throughout the event.
Originally, the studio had only a dozen or so people. Apart from a few older teachers, everyone else had gone to the exhibition hall, including Winona.
Winona strolled along the hall leisurely. She had already seen everything in the exhibition area, so she headed straight to the selling area.
The selling area had a variety of items, including contemporary paintings, luxury goods, and jewelry. It was all very valuable and consigned by others for sale. Ten percent of the sales price would be donated as charity.
However, Winona, who was initially just looking around casually, suddenly stopped in her tracks. Her gaze was fixed on a painting. A contemporary piece with a background of large splashes of color that seemed random at first glance but had an artistic feel when paired together. Upon closer inspection, one could see the silhouette of a girl wearing a red hat and a black velvet dress, holding a rabbit lamp in her hand.
In an instant, an uncontrollable wave of emotions surged in Winona's eyes...
