Chapter 608 Involved in a Car Accident
Winona hated the cold. Every winter, she barely left the house, always driving everywhere back home. She rarely had to brave the biting wind like this.
Zachary reached out and pulled her into his arms, guiding her to the passenger seat. "Get in the car."
The car was still running, and just looking at it made Winona feel warmer. She wanted to jump in immediately, but she hadn't lost her senses completely. "My colleagues are still here."
This wasn't like back home, where everyone went their separate ways after work.
They were all staying at the same hotel and had plans to eat together later. It wouldn't be right to leave them behind unless she didn't plan on working at the museum anymore.
Zachary said, "There was an accident earlier, but the road is clear now. Your ride should be here soon."
Just as he finished speaking, a van pulled up in front of them. The driver rolled down the window and, in broken English, told them to get in.
Since they had dinner plans and it would be more convenient, Winona decided to ride with her colleagues. She explained to Zachary, "It's a company dinner, so it's not convenient to bring you along. I'll send you the hotel address and room number later."
After standing outside for a bit, Winona had adjusted to the temperature. It was still cold, but at least her teeth weren't chattering anymore.
Rosewood City in March wasn't that cold, but the sudden transition from the warm museum to the chilly outdoors had been a shock to her system.
Zachary held her hand the entire time, noticing it never warmed up. Seeing her pale face, he opened the passenger door and gently pushed her inside. "Sit."
He bent down to buckle her seatbelt. "Give me half a minute. I need to talk to your team leader."
"Talk..."
Winona tried to stop him, but before she could say more, Zachary had already closed the door and walked over to the young man waiting by the van.
His long, straight legs in those suit pants were quite a sight.
But Winona wasn't in the mood to admire him. She wasn't worried Zachary would say anything inappropriate. He was a smooth talker, especially in business.
Of course, that didn't apply when he was talking to her.
Winona just didn't want her colleagues to think she was mixing personal matters with work. She didn't care what they thought of her, but a harmonious work environment was always better.
Zachary said half a minute, and he meant it. Just as Winona was about to get out of the car, he turned and walked back.
Not only that, but he and the team leader had exchanged WhatsApp contacts, and the leader looked at him with gratitude.
Winona was surprised. "What did you say to Toby?"
Zachary followed the van in his car. "You'll find out tomorrow."
Adding a bit of mystery, huh?
Winona's curiosity was piqued, but no matter how many times she asked, Zachary wouldn't tell.
He handed her a new phone. "It's the latest model. If you don't like it, I'll get you another one."
"Thanks."
Who wouldn't like the latest model?
Winona happily took the phone, forgetting about Zachary's secret for the moment. She started fiddling with her new phone. Not using her phone all day felt like not wearing clothes; she felt uncomfortable.
Zachary glanced at her.
Winona's head was down, her hair falling to cover half her face. Her long, curled eyelashes and flawless skin were striking.
Seeing her attention shift from him to the phone, Zachary pursed his lips in displeasure, gripping the steering wheel tighter.
He felt irritated.
He had come on a whim, without arranging his work properly, and would have to leave in a few days. But his wife didn't seem to miss him at all.
Zachary dropped Winona off at the restaurant but didn't go in with her. "I have a meeting. If I'm not back by the time you're done, go back to the hotel with your colleagues."
Dinner was at an Aetherian restaurant. Whether they liked the food or not, they had to try the local cuisine.
To their surprise, the food was quite good, and the restaurant was close to their hotel. They decided to walk back after dinner to help with digestion.
"Toby, you could switch careers and become a tour guide if you ever get tired of the museum," someone joked.
Toby had never been abroad and wasn't keen on traveling. He had taken on this trip reluctantly because Caleb, who was older, didn't want to deal with the hassle. Toby had done a lot of research online before coming.
Even so, he was exhausted by the end of the day.
Toby said, "Mr. Bailey recommended the restaurant."
He didn't know Aetherian and wasn't familiar with the local apps. After searching all day, he couldn't find a suitable place. They were either too far, too fancy, or the food was terrible.
He had planned to pick a random place on the way back to the hotel, but Zachary had solved the problem for him.
Toby looked relieved and had a big appetite. Even after everyone else had put down their utensils, he was still eating happily. "Mr. Bailey also sorted out the car situation. He has an international driver's license and can help drive. Plus, he speaks Aetherian. If there's anything you want to buy or places you want to visit, now's your chance."
In a while, the event would officially start, and the translator would arrive.
They had come early to learn, a private arrangement by the museum, so they didn't have a translator with them.
Winona stayed silent.
She hid her smile behind her glass of water. Zachary probably didn't know that his secret plan had been exposed by Toby. He was likely waiting eagerly for her shocked reaction when she saw him driving tomorrow.
After dinner, they headed downstairs. Winona texted Zachary: "We're done eating. Are you here?"
"Five more minutes. Wait for me at the restaurant. I want to take you somewhere."
Winona told her colleagues she wouldn't be going back to the hotel with them.
When Zachary arrived, she was on a video call with Rebecca. She hung up when she saw him and stood up. "Where are you taking me?"
She had been on her feet all day and just wanted to lie down at the hotel.
"To see our house."
Winona was puzzled.
Zachary had sent her the address before they came, but she hadn't planned on staying there, so she hadn't paid much attention or visited.
"Did you used to live in Rosewood City?"
If he hadn't, why buy a house here? It couldn't be because he liked the city and wanted to move here, right?
Zachary's eyes flickered, and he pressed his lips together. "No."
