Chapter 493 Here, Your Child

Matthew, who initially said he'd just walk Winona upstairs, lifted the stuff in his hand a bit when he saw Zachary. "I'll take her home, then come in for a cup of tea," he said.

Zachary clenched his jaw. "Matthew, she's my wife."

"Ex-wife," Matthew corrected him. Not satisfied with just that, he added, "You two split up last year."

Winona, used to their constant bickering, didn't step in, worried they'd lose it and cause a scene.

While they were talking, Winona opened the door, shot Zachary an annoyed look, and said, "Come in and talk."

Zachary glared at Matthew, who just smiled and said, like he owned the place, "Come on in. You don't want to chat in the hallway, do you?"

Who did Zachary think he was? This was Winona's place. What right did he have to invite people in? Heck, what right did he have to even be here?

Then Zachary stepped out of the stairwell and walked in before Matthew.

At the entrance, Matthew finally got a good look at Zachary and frowned. "Zachary, need me to find a doctor for you? You look like crap—dark circles, dead eyes, pale with a hint of green..."

Zachary hadn't slept since getting Samuel's call last night. He couldn't go to the Bailey Group to find Winona, so he had to wait here. With all that on his mind and no sleep, no wonder he looked awful.

But even looking rough, it wasn't as bad as Matthew made it sound. Matthew was just trying to make him look bad in front of Winona, taking advantage of the situation.

Thinking of this, Zachary shot back, "Even if you're not weak, Winona still doesn't want you. Why do you have to butt in when someone else is in a relationship? Isn't that low?"

Matthew replied, "A single guy and a single girl. Everyone likes a beautiful woman. I like Winona and want to go after her. What's wrong with that?"

Winona rubbed her forehead, feeling fed up with these two acting like kids. From Matthew's look, it was clear he wasn't really confessing; he was just trying to rile up Zachary.

"Stop arguing, you two," she said.

But neither of them listened.

Already pissed, Zachary got even more heated. "You're stealing your friend's girl and acting all high and mighty about it. Matthew, she's pregnant with my kid."

True or not, she was pregnant now.Hearing this, Matthew's warm smile finally cracked, like he was trying not to laugh.

"Yeah, I know. I don't mind being a stepdad. I'll treat..." He paused, searching for the right words, "your kid like my own. You won't even have to worry about child support."

Zachary was practically shaking with anger. "Why should my kid call you 'Dad'? Can't I take care of them myself? Why do you feel the need to butt in? Don't think I don't know what you're up to, always hanging around Winona, trying to take advantage."

He continued, "I'm telling you, as long as I'm around, Winona will never like you. Even if you move across the street, it won't make a difference."

Winona shot back, "Zachary, Matthew is here to talk business, not whatever nonsense you're thinking."

Zachary was already fuming, but Matthew just kept poking the bear. Matthew nodded like he had an epiphany. "Good point. I'll ask the neighbors across the street if they want to sublet tomorrow."

Winona glared at him and said, "You should keep your mouth shut."

Zachary, who hadn't slept in days, had bloodshot eyes. Matthew's relentless provocation made his temper flare, and he snapped, "If you want a kid, go find a woman and have one! Or are you infertile and trying to steal mine?"

Matthew replied, "It's not about whose kid it is; it's about who the kid's mother is."

Winona couldn't take it anymore.

They were arguing because of her, yet she had become the mediator, frequently ignored. As they started arguing about the kid again, Winona finally couldn't stand it and raised her voice. "Stop arguing!"

As her words hung in the air, silence settled in.

Winona looked at the still-angry Zachary, pulled out a thin baby pillow from her clothes, and threw it at him. "Here, your kid."

Although he had suspected it after hearing Samuel's words yesterday, Zachary was still a bit stunned at this moment. The pillow hit him, and he didn't react.

Winona rolled her eyes and exclaimed, "Didn't you want a kid? Hold it properly, or it'll fall and get hurt."

Hearing this, Zachary instinctively held the nearly falling pillow, completely forgetting it wasn't a kid but just a pillow.

"This?" He looked at Winona and then at the pillow in his arms. "You're not pregnant?" he asked.

At this, Matthew sneered.

Zachary then remembered there was an audience. He turned his gaze to see no surprise on Matthew's face. He then looked at Winona and asked, "He knew too?"
