Chapter 674 All Forgotten
Winona glared at Zachary for a few more seconds, still feeling unsatisfied. "Looks like you're pretty happy with the fiancée Timothy picked out for you. It's been ages, and you still remember her name."
For Zachary, that name wasn't just a person anymore; it symbolized the beginning of his suffering. Every time he heard it, it brought a new wave of torment.
So, it wasn't just a short period; he might never forget that name for the rest of his life.
Zachary was silent for a moment, not denying it. He solemnly assured her, "Winona, I've never met her. I don't even know if she exists. During the time Timothy kept me locked up, I never saw her. So, I only remember a name, and it won't affect our relationship in any real way."
Seeing his serious and earnest explanation, Winona felt a pang of sadness and quickly held his hand. "I was just kidding, I'm not mad. It's okay to remember."
Thinking about it, if it were her, she might remember even more deeply, to the point of calling out the name in her dreams.
Winona thought for a moment. "After you were sent to the ER yesterday, the doctor did a head scan. There's nothing major, but your headaches might be aftereffects of hypnosis and taking random medications. Do you have any other symptoms?"
Zachary hesitated. "My sleep isn't great, and I sometimes zone out."
He spoke slowly, still glancing at her from time to time.
Winona couldn't hold back and urged him, "What else?"
"My memory isn't as good as it used to be."
Zachary had always been a top student, even earning dual degrees, so his memory was excellent. His vague answer was almost like saying nothing.
Winona frowned. "Not as good as before? How bad is it?"
"Sometimes I can't remember things from the past."
Previously, it was just fuzzy memories, forgetting unimportant things. But recently, he felt the symptoms worsening. He had to start flipping through his journal, but even then, he only knew the facts, not the specific details.
The forgotten events became cold, lifeless memories, and he couldn't remember if they were important or not.
Winona suddenly asked, "Do you remember my graduation project?"
"I remember."
Zachary's brief hesitation didn't escape her notice. That painting, which he bought at a high price, was still in his study drawer. It should be a very important memory for him, but now he couldn't remember it.
It only showed that his condition was worse than he admitted.
Winona asked directly, "Do you remember how much you paid for that painting?"
Zachary instantly understood. It wasn't about the painting; Winona was testing him. She didn't care if he understood her art. "Sorry."
He didn't say more, but the meaning was clear. He had forgotten.
Winona smiled and hugged the dejected Zachary. "It's okay, forgetting is fine. Our past memories weren't that great anyway. It was either you pining for me or me pining for you. Even after we got married, there were misunderstandings and that annoying Fiona."
"Forget it all. From now on, whether it's someone who looks like her or her herself, you can stay focused and won't feel the need to play hero and get entangled." She showed him her engagement ring. "Our memories start now, with a loving, sweet marriage."
Mentioning Maeve, her tone carried a hint of disdain. No wonder she looked so much like Fiona; their minds were equally malicious. If they couldn't have someone, they'd try to destroy their rival. Winona wasn't the one rejecting them; they should go after Maeve.
Zachary didn't know Winona's thoughts. He was still moved by her words.
He hugged her tightly. "Yes, from now on, a loving, sweet marriage."
An untimely knock on the door broke the warm atmosphere in the hospital room. Zachary reluctantly loosened his hold on Winona, while she turned to see Evander at the door. "Dad."
She wanted to get up and fetch a chair for him, but Evander gestured for her to stay seated. "You sit. I'm just here for a quick check-in and will leave soon."
Evander had already asked the nurse about Zachary's condition, knowing it wasn't serious and he could be discharged after a couple of days of observation.
Evander asked, "How are you feeling?"
"Alright."
"Does the injury still hurt?"
"A bit."
Evander was true to his word, asking a few questions to confirm Zachary's condition before quickly turning to leave.
Zachary frowned. "Where's Mom?"
"Your mom was a bit shaken up and is resting at home. Take care of yourself and don't make her worry while she's still recovering."
Lydia had been taken from the nursing home by Alton and now refused to go back. Samuel had to bring her home and arrange for a family doctor to stay with her. Knowing Zachary was in the hospital, she sent Evander to check on him.
Winona, hearing Lydia was shaken, became more concerned than Zachary himself. "Is Mom okay? I'll go check on her."
Evander reassured her. "She's fine. She calmed down after hearing Alton was arrested. She just can't travel right now, so I didn't let her come. Stay here and take care of Zachary. I'll handle Lydia; don't worry."
"Zachary's injuries aren't serious and won't affect his daily life. You can get a nurse to watch him for a few hours. I'll go to the old house and check on her."
Winona ultimately didn't leave because Zachary, with a sour expression, held onto her. "Mom has Dad; she doesn't need you."
