Chapter 341 Frank is Pursuing Winona
Eva thought Zachary was worried about her and smiled, about to speak, when a bodyguard announced, "Mr. Bailey, Mr. Turner is here."
Frank?
Her expression changed as she looked at Winona. "Winona, don't you want to know which Turner family member is after your mom? You can't get in there, but I can help."
Winona put down her fork. "Thanks, but no thanks."
She stood up, and just as she reached the door, Frank arrived. "Sorry for the trouble. I'll take Eva now."
Eva had agreed to go back to A City and booked a flight for the day after tomorrow. She claimed she wanted to say goodbye to friends in Dreamopolis first. Frank, busy with work, had Rodolfo assign someone to follow her and agreed.
He didn't expect her to come to Regal Oaks.
Usually, Frank wouldn't come to pick someone up himself.
Winona stood on the steps, looking down at Frank. She smiled politely. "Mr. Turner, can we talk?"
Frank paused, then nodded. "Okay."
They went to a garden pavilion by a small lake. The evening breeze carried a light mist, and blooming flowers scented the air.
Quinn brought coffee, set it down, and left.
"My mom died early, but she was good to me," Winona said, pouring Frank a cup. "I appreciated her kindness more later."
She gave a self-deprecating smile. "You don't know what you have until it's gone."
Frank started, "During that time..."
He wanted to say, 'You suffered,' but stopped himself.
Rodolfo had already looked into Winona's past. Frank knew she meant the time when her stepmother and stepsister targeted her, and Carlos favored them.
Winona poured more coffee. "Did you look into my mom's sudden death?"
Frank put down his cup. "I'm not the one who caused your mom's death."
Winona had investigated him and heard from Nova that Frank was likely a good guy. But people change; who knew what happened over a decade?
Frank looked at her. "Not letting you investigate is for your safety. I've been on this for years. As long as the culprit is caught, does it matter who finds out?"
Winona told Frank what Eva had said. Seeing no change in his expression, she asked, "So, it was someone from the Turner family?"
"Yes, the Turners are complicated. Stay out of it."
"If you want me out, can you at least update me? What have you found? Any suspects? It'll give me peace of mind." Winona tilted her head, looking like a playful daughter. "Knowing the progress will keep me from overthinking."
The Turner family had a lot of members. Since Frank took over, most kept a low profile, with some even sent abroad. They weren't people she could easily reach.
Winona couldn't figure out their backgrounds and personalities on her own. Plus, it had been over ten years. How could an outsider investigate people she couldn't even access?
The ten Turner siblings were known for their infighting. After their father died, they fought hard for the inheritance. As the winner, Frank must know them all very well.
Frank smiled, his sharp features softening. "Don't bother trying to get info from me. It's useless. I won't tell you. All I can say is, it's almost done."
Winona's face fell. Frank was indeed a sly old fox.
He said seriously, "Don't let Mr. Bailey investigate either. The events of that year are complicated. Exposing them could cost lives. The other party has been lying low for years. If they get desperate, there are many people who would do anything for money. Secret attacks and schemes are the hardest to guard against."
Frank stopped, but Winona got the message. If the person knew they were about to be exposed, they might harm Zachary. If they were going down, they might take someone with them.
The pavilion was a bit away from the main house, so their voices couldn't be heard, but they could be seen clearly from the windows.
Eva was anxious. She glanced at the calm Zachary. "Frank has never treated any woman this specially. Aren't you worried something might happen between them? It's said that women with absent fathers often develop feelings for older men to make up for the lack of fatherly love."
She watched Zachary's expression. Though he looked indifferent and cold, he glanced at the pavilion more often, his eyes growing colder.
"Uncle Frank is unmarried, with zero scandals. Although he's older, apart from some wrinkles, he doesn't look old. His physique is as good as some young men's. If you said he was in his early forties, no one would doubt it. Plus, he's handsome and elegant," Eva said truthfully. "Men his age have experience, knowledge, and wisdom. When they pamper a woman, it's like spoiling a child. If Uncle Frank really pursued Winona, do you think she could resist?"
Zachary's gaze fell on Eva. The light reflected in his dark pupils, cold and chilling. "Miss Turner, it's time for you to leave."
Before Eva could react, a bodyguard grabbed her wheelchair handles and pushed her out of the living room.
Silence returned. Zachary turned his gaze towards the pavilion.
He didn't know what Frank said, but the previously serious Winona suddenly laughed, her lips moving.
He couldn't hear, but from the shape of her mouth, she said, "Thank you."
Zachary looked at Winona's delicate, smiling face under the light, his thin lips pressed into a straight line.
Although Eva's words were harsh, he had to admit that the two of them sitting together looked exceptionally well-matched.
By the misty pool, a man and a woman looked at each other across the light, making the surrounding flowers seem like an eyesore.
At this moment, age didn't matter at all.
Zachary endured his rising irritation for a few more seconds before he couldn't hold back any longer. He stood up abruptly, the chair legs scraping against the floor with a sharp, grating sound.
