Chapter 105 Parting on Good Terms

Zachary's focus was on the documents. "Fiona, all that is in the past," he replied indifferently.

Tears reddened Fiona's eyes. "I was your girlfriend for two years. I deserve to know. When you were dating me, the person in your heart, was it me?"

She had never asked this question before.

Their being together was a complete misunderstanding. At that time, due to planning a party, they often discussed things together, and after numerous encounters, rumors of them dating began to spread.

Later, when someone teased them about it, Zachary didn't respond. Perhaps it was his pride as the favored son that made him disdain clarifying such baseless rumors, but to others, his silence was seen as confirmation.

And so, Fiona became his girlfriend, just like that.

Zachary looked at Fiona. Unlike her visibly agitated state, his voice remained calm and steady. "I..."

"There is no need to say it," Fiona cut him off. A self-deprecating smile, more pained than tears, crossed her face.

She took a step back and said, "How could I ask such a foolish question? How could a man who hasn't even held my hand in two years possibly like me? But it's not your fault. After all, you told me to pursue my own happiness if I ever found someone I liked."

Fiona didn't want to hear anything hurtful from Zachary, so she turned and left, leaving behind the documents on the table without a second thought.

Zachary closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose. After a few seconds, he opened his eyes wearily and pressed the intercom button. "Dylan, could you bring these documents to Fiona?"

Once Dylan had left with the documents, Zachary pulled open the top drawer of his desk, revealing a wristwatch.

The metal back was engraved with the logo of a luxury brand, but it wasn't the model his company had released.

It was a custom-made watch, identical to the one he had received at Matthew's welcome party, except that this one showed its age.

When the phone rang, Winona was delicately attaching a thumbnail-sized piece of porcelain back to its original form with tweezers. She had kept her phone silent, as she didn't want to disturb her meticulous work. She glanced at the screen when it lit up and saw it was Mr. Baker calling.

He had previously called her a few times, asking her to return to the studio to work.

Winona put down the tweezers and wiped her hands with a damp cloth before answering the call. "Mr. Baker?"

"Windy, are you free to have dinner together?"

Mr. Baker was about the age of her grandfather. Winona couldn't bear to refuse him, so she accepted.

"Alright, I'll let you know where we're going once I've made the reservation."

It wouldn't be polite to show up empty-handed, especially since Mr. Baker had taken good care of her during her time at View Studio. Winona got ready and set out for the mall to buy some gifts.

Just as she opened the door, she saw Matthew, who was walking in her direction.

A flicker of surprise passed through his eyes. "Did you know I was coming? Are you here to welcome me?" he teased.

Winona knew he was joking and didn't take it to heart. "What brings you here?"

Matthew replied, "I was just passing by, so I thought I'd check in to see if you were doing okay. The security guard at the entrance said someone bothered you last night."

He didn't mention that he had asked the security guard to keep an eye on her apartment and that he had called him about the disturbance last night. However, Matthew had been out of town and couldn't get back in time.

Winona stepped aside. "It's been taken care of. Would you like to come in and sit?"

Matthew glanced at the high heels she wore. "Are you going out?"

"Yeah, I have dinner plans with an elder tonight. I'm heading to the mall to pick out a gift for him."

"There's a large shopping center not far from here. I'm free this afternoon. How about I take you?"

Winona wasn't aware of the shopping center Matthew mentioned. Though she'd been living in the area for a while, she wasn't one to venture out much. "That would be great, thank you."

"You've become a lot more polite. Our families used to visit each other quite often. Back then, you scaled walls to sneak into my yard to steal fruits without a shred of shyness."

Winona laughed awkwardly. "I was young and didn't know any better."

Back then, her mother was still with them; she was a little princess in her parents' eyes, slightly mischievous. Seeing the untouched, ripe pears in Matthew's yard, she couldn't help but climb the tree and steal some.

One day, she was caught red-handed by Matthew, who was reading in the yard. As she was startled, a pear slipped from her hand and dropped right onto his head.

It was truly embarrassing!

For a moment, a nostalgic glint appeared in Matthew's eyes. "Those were really the best times."

Winona thought he was getting sentimental, reflecting on how adulthood brings more worries than youth. "People have to grow up and experience all sorts of things in life."

Matthew looked at her and cracked a smile. "You sound just like the philosophy teacher we had in school."

He changed the subject. "Have you sorted things out with Zachary?"

Winona suddenly felt a surge of irritation. As she had lost the last lawsuit, she would have to wait three months before filing an appeal, and considering how the previous situation had gone against her, it seemed that no matter how many times she appealed, the outcome would remain the same.

"No, it seems like an issue that won't be resolved in this lifetime. Do you know a lawyer who's more formidable than Anthony?"

Matthew was aware that Zachary and Winona were going through a divorce, but he wasn't keeping close track of the situation, catching only snippets during occasional gatherings. He didn't know it had escalated to court.

He shook his head. "No." He hadn't heard of any lawyer on par with Anthony in the legal field.

"If you're looking to get something favorable out of him legally, it's going to be tough. You might be better off having a real talk with Zachary. Even if you do divorce, it's best to part on good terms."

Winona couldn't control her frustration. "You clearly don't understand Zachary. Expecting him to listen is laughable. He's deliberately dragging out the divorce. If he's miserable, he won't let anyone else be happy."

Matthew looked at Winona, who was filled with righteous indignation, with a complex expression and said, "Zachary isn't the type to cling to someone."
