Chapter 70 Winona's Fever Persists Late at Night

Winona was seething with anger yet couldn't suppress a laugh. "Sure, remember to choose a watchdog, at least it looks strong and powerful..."

She paused and added with a meaningful tone, "However, these days, there are many who look good but are useless, not just animals."

Zachary's temple throbbed with pain, and he squeezed his brows. He said with a harsh tone, "Get out."

Winona shrugged, "Give me back my phone."

The man's gaze dropped to her fair palm, "Are you worried about your phone, or the man who calls you?"

"Zachary, you wouldn't mock me to death, would you? You brought me out of the cultural center without even wearing a coat. I'm penniless, and you want me to get off the car? Do you want me to walk all the way back?"

The cultural center was far from the main city, even further from the neighborhood where she lived.

Zachary's expression improved a bit after her explanation. He threw her phone, which was tucked in his jacket pocket, to her and said, "If you give in, you don't have to get off the car."

However, before he could finish his sentence, Winona didn't say a word and pushed the car door open and walked away. When the door slammed shut, the entire car shook.

As soon as Winona got out of the car, she was drenched by water droplets rolling down from the leaves. The autumn rain soaked with the bone-chilling coldness of winter, and her wet clothes clung to her body, making her shiver.

Zachary neither drove away nor got out of the car. His gaze fell straight onto the petite figure in the rearview mirror, now thoroughly soaked and looking miserable. His thin lips pursed, clearly infuriated.

Rainy days were not ideal for catching a taxi, especially in such cold weather. And Winona was dressed so lightly.

He was waiting for her to come back and plead to him!

This thought slightly eased the annoyance in his heart.

While Winona was making a call back to Alex, she raised her hand to hail a cab. The call connected quickly, and she learned that Alex was looking for her, not for business matters, but just because it had been a while since they last met, and he was concerned about any possible accidents.

"I'm fine. I just ran into an acquaintance. Could you take care of things at the exhibition? I'm not feeling well and need to go back and rest," Winona asked.

"Don't worry about the exhibition. Security guards are there," Alex didn't suspect anything.

"The weather has been changing a lot recently, and many people caught colds. If you're really uncomfortable, you can go to the hospital. It'll help you recover quickly."

"Okay, thank you."

After hanging up the phone, a taxi happened to be passing by. It was lucky to catch a cab in this weather. Winona didn't mind that there were already passengers inside. She opened the door and got in.

She didn't look at the Bentley parked in its original spot, but she knew that the man in the car must have a terrible expression...

Upon returning to the Seventh Apartments, Winona immediately went to the bathroom.

Although the taxi had air conditioning, her entire body was soaked, rendering the cool air ineffective.

Her hands were numb as she fumbled with the keys to open the door. It wasn't until the lukewarm water poured over her body that she felt alive again.

Telling Alex on the phone that she wasn't feeling well was just an excuse, but it didn't take long for Winona to realize that she indeed had a fever!

Her body burned like a furnace while she shivered from the cold. She felt weak all over, with a splitting headache.

She rarely fell ill, and since she moved here, she had been busy every day. There were no medicines in her home.

Since her mother's death and with Carlos stepping in as a father figure, Winona had learned to rely on her own immune system during the rare times she fell ill.

Based on her experience, sleeping it off should help reduce the fever.

In a daze, she heard her phone ringing. Without opening her eyes, she reached out and found her phone on the bedside table. "Hello..."

The person on the other end of the line was Matthew. Sensing something wrong in her voice, he stayed silent for a few seconds before speaking, "Winona?"

"Hmm..." Winona's consciousness was still relatively clear at the moment. She recognized Matthew's voice and tried to focus, "Do you need something?"

"I have a small favor to ask you..."

"My grandfather received something from someone else's hands and wants to ask if you know anyone who can help verify its authenticity."

Winona was a bit confused and took a while to respond, "I can help you tomorrow, bring it to the cultural center."

The charity exhibition lasted for three days, and she would be there during that time.

"Okay."

After discussing the matter, they fell into silence.

In such an atmosphere, Winona's heavy breathing became more abrupt and clear.

Although Matthew didn't hear her speak, the call was still connected. This was an unprecedented situation, and he couldn't help but worry, "Are you feeling unwell somewhere?"

"I have a slight cold," she vaguely replied, seemingly on the verge of falling into a deep sleep.

"Have you taken any medicine? Where is Zachary?"

Matthew waited for a while but didn't hear a response. Thinking back to his recent conversation with Samuel, who had casually mentioned Winona's divorce and moving out of Regal Oaks, his brows furrowed. "Where are you now?"

Winona reflexively gave her address, completely unaware of her subconscious behavior caused by confusion.

Later, she didn't know when Matthew had ended the call, and she even forgot about telling him her address. She was immersed in a deep slumber...

At 10 o'clock that night, Night Club was filled with colorful lights.

Samuel stared expressionlessly at the man drinking silently on the sofa. "Did Winona dump you? It's quite late, yet you're here drinking instead of being with her."

Zachary held a glass in his hand, gently swirling the amber liquid, and glanced at Samuel for a moment as if mocking him. "Are you crazy or blind? Are you seriously suggesting that she would dump me? Do you think that's possible?"

Samuel's lips curved into a cold smile, void of any warmth. "Look at your pitiful appearance, as if you've been abandoned. Someone who doesn't know would think you intentionally got drunk to sleep with her under the pretext of being intoxicated."

Zachary felt annoyed and furrowed his brows impatiently. "Why are you so lewd? No wonder you don't have a woman by your side. It seems like you've become perverted from all the pent-up frustration. Now, get lost and leave me alone."

Samuel coldly laughed and stood up, "Unbelievable. No wonder Winona dumped you. Can't handle women, and you can't even speak decently."

Samuel had maintained a regular schedule for the past two years, typically going to bed at ten. Now, he was dragged out by Zachary to accompany him for drinks, and he was being insulted like a fool.

As the private room door opened, someone happened to pass by. They seemed to have just arrived, their clothes still wet from the rain. Their footsteps were quick as they shook off the water droplets, cursing, "Damn, it's freezing! I'll probably have to burn all night after getting soaked in this rain!"

Samuel paid no attention to the person and was about to leave when he heard hurried footsteps behind him...

Before he could turn around, he saw Zachary, who had just said he wanted to be alone, quickly pass by him.

Samuel frowned, wondering where the hell Zachary was in such a hurry to go.
