Chapter 483 Try It Now
Winona rolled her eyes and said, "Most people come back from being missing with a stunning fiancée, but you? You come back with a guy—an overprotective one at that!"
Zachary frowned, feeling a bit wronged. "I didn't..."
He stopped mid-sentence, looking at Winona with delight. "Did you say I came back with a guy? Winona, you believe me? You believe I'm Zachary?"
He looked overly excited and foolish.
Winona deliberately teased him. "No."
Zachary was so clever around Timothy, even hinting that Timothy knew the number of pills. How could he be acting so foolish now? If she didn't trust him, would she really have allowed him to kiss and touch her without pushing him away?
Zachary got anxious when he saw Winona heading towards the sofa. He reached out and grabbed her. "But you just said..."
Winona, unable to walk away, faced him with a look of disdain and frowned. "Mr. Ramsey, you said you don't remember anything before a certain age. I suspect it's not that you don't remember, but that your brain has turned into a pig's brain. You're acting so clueless."
As soon as she finished speaking, Zachary pulled her into his arms. She had made it so clear that if he still didn't understand, he really would be dumb. He said, "Winona, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hide it from you. This was the only way I could think of to protect you. I want to find out who is behind him, who hates the Bailey family so much, and who knows the Bailey Group so well. They even have people inside the Bailey Group."
By not dragging Winona into danger, Timothy and the people behind him wouldn't notice her. To them, she was just Zachary's ex-wife, not worth their effort. Given his current constraints, this was the only thing he could do for her now.
The person who tripped Winona last time, almost causing her to fall down the stairs, had been found, but they hadn't acted yet.
Zachary did not act because he wanted to follow the clues and eliminate everyone behind them. Before that, he couldn't alert the enemy.
"Then why aren't you afraid of me being in danger now?" Winona was still angry. She was angry that this man made decisions for her under the guise of doing it for her own good, arranging her life as he saw fit. Her words were full of anger. "Can you now turn the tables and beat Timothy?"
Zachary felt something was off with her words. What did she mean by turning the tables and beating Timothy? But to quickly move past this topic, he didn't dare to argue and just followed Winona's words. "No, but Timothy has his eyes on you now. He's very good at deceiving people, especially the type of guy you girls like. If you don't know anything, you'll easily fall for his tricks."Even though Timothy was young, he had high emotional intelligence and was pretty good-looking. The young girls at the company, who were still green, would blush just hearing his name.
Winona probably wouldn't fall for Timothy, but you never know. She was heartbroken and vulnerable right now, making it easy for someone to swoop in. If Timothy got his way, Zachary might end up regretting it too late.
Zachary said, "Just stay away from him, okay? If you see him, take a detour."
Failing to win her over today, Timothy would surely find other ways to get close to Winona.
Winona seemed lost in thought in front of Zachary and didn't speak for a while. When he gently reminded her, she snapped back to reality and replied, "Got it."
Zachary frowned and said, "Don't brush me off. If you don't listen, I'll send you overseas for a while. Once I sort everything out, I'll bring you back."
He knew Winona didn't appreciate him trying to control her life, but he couldn't just stand by and watch her walk into danger. Especially today, when he saw her spill the pills and attempt to hide one, his heart was filled with worry.
Zachary wasn't afraid of Timothy's overt moves but rather of him using underhanded tactics. No one could protect someone 24/7. Just like Jackson, even though he had people secretly watching Zachary, there were still moments of negligence.
Jackson was a man, short and fat, but he used to be in the underworld, known for his ruthlessness. He had only become lax in recent years after going straight, losing his former vigilance. But even so, he was more capable than Winona, a woman with no experience in danger. If Jackson was fooled by Timothy, then Winona didn't stand a chance.
It was just too dangerous.
Winona understood that Zachary was worried about her. "I won't put myself in danger. But you, spending every day with that psycho—just make sure you don't get infected. If your control freak tendencies get any worse, I swear I'll buy a ticket and leave the country, far away from you," she said.
With the serious talk behind them, Zachary felt his tension lift at once. They had been chatting for so long in the dim light of the room, and the fragrance of Winona beside him stirred desires he had long kept hidden.
Now that he had regained his identity and Winona was so close, those thoughts in his mind began to rise uncontrollably.
In the darkness, Zachary accurately grasped her hand. His heavy breathing grew more rapid as he leaned closer. "I won't. How about you try now?"
