Chapter 239 A despicable Man Like Me
Zachary was agitated. "Withdraw your filthy hand."
Austin removed his hand from Winona's forehead and teasingly asked, "This one?"
Austin raised an eyebrow at Zachary, then provocatively touched Winona again, even ruffling her hair. Winona, caught off guard by the childish behavior of the him, didn't have time to react before he messed up her hair.
Austin continued, "Do you know what qualities a decent ex-husband should possess? You should act as if dead. But here you are, showing up every few days, causing trouble for others."
As Zachary was about to get out of bed, the nurse came in with a tray and handed him a thermometer, instructing him to take his temperature.
The nurse then turned to Matthew, who was still sitting on the stool, and gently said, "Sir, I'm sorry, but it's late now. Our hospital regulations state that family members cannot stay in the ward after eleven o'clock."
Matthew stood up.
The nurse thought Matthew was leaving. However, he moved the stool and sat down by Zachary's bed, saying, "Perfect, I'll take care of him."
Zachary's expression livid, he impatiently said, "Get lost."
Matthew smiled, "After all, I'm Winona's brother. If you're her ex-husband, then I'm your brother too. Seeing how lonely you are, I'll reluctantly take care of you."
The atmosphere in the ward instantly became tense.
Zachary and Matthew locked eyes, one cold and the other gentle, but it didn't affect the tension in their gazes.
No one spoke; even the nurses went away.
Winona, already with a headache, felt it worsen as she raised her hand to press her temples. Before her hand could reach her head, she sensed three men looking at her in unison.
This scene was truly unreasonabe.
She said to Austin, "You should go rest. I don't have much going on here. I'll probably be discharged tomorrow morning."
As for Zachary and Matthew, she couldn't control them. One was a patient, the other a caregiver. The hospital wasn't hers to manage. Could she really ask the doctor to kick them out?
Austin raised an eyebrow, looking at the other two beside him. "So, you're just going to use me and toss me aside, Winona? You are heartless. The resort is so far from here, and I didn't even bring my car down. Let me at least get some sleep and leave in the morning. It's not safe to take a cab this late."
"You're a man. Even if you walk naked, you wouldn't suffer a loss. What's unsafe about that?"
"Just because I'm a man. Even if I want to seek justice in such situation, I have to prove why I was assaulted and how I cooperated."
Winona directly took the pillow behind her and covered Austin's mouth. "Please be quiet."
Winona was afraid he might say something inappropriate.
Winona decided to ignore them, lay back on the bed, and closed her eyes, facing away from them. "If you have nothing to do, ask the nurse for a deck of cards to play. If you disturb my rest by talking, I'll tell on you to the nurses."
Winona didn't know if they argued later, but at least before she fell asleep, they didn't speak again. Winona slept deeply because of having climbed the mountain for over an hour in the afternoon, waited on the observation deck until evening, and then got caught in the rain. Even God couldn't handle such a hassle. When she woke up, the doctor was doing rounds.
Seeing her open her eyes, Austin, who was answering the doctor's questions, said, "Are you feeling uncomfortable?"
Winona shook her head. Besides the uncomfortable hospital bed, a bit of back pain, and a sore waist, she didn't feel unwell, and she didn't even have cold symptoms.
After the doctor finished the rounds and left, Winona got up to wash up in the bathroom. When she came out, the breakfast Austin ordered had arrived, with a variety of breakfast items laid out on the table.
Austin handed her a disposable fork. "Hurry and eat; it's getting cold."
Zachary and Matthew had also woken up by the side, but surprisingly, no one said a word in this situation, which didn't quite fit their usual way of interacting when together. Winona felt something was off but also thought she might be overthinking. It wasn't until she finished her meal and told Austin she was ready to be discharged that the two men didn't speak up. "What's wrong with them?"
Austin replied calmly, "They lost at poker and agreed that the loser couldn't talk to you today or hang around you."
Winona rolled her eyes and thought they were childish.
Feeling fine after confirming with the doctor that she could be discharged, Austin went to handle the paperwork.
Zachary, sitting on the stool, kicked it and said to Matthew, who was busy with paperwork, "Aren't you the family member? I'm getting discharged; hurry up and do the paperwork."
Austin, who was already at the door, turned back with a smirk. "Are you waiting for us to leave so you can talk to Winona?"
Zachary sneered, "Just because you often do these immoral things, you think everyone is like you?"
"Not.Because you are despicable, it's normal for me to worry."
After saying this, Austin left. Zachary didn't have a chance to retort and could only hold back his anger and shift his gaze back. He happened to see Winona trying hard to hold back a laugh but failing.
"What's so funny?"
Winona actually wanted to ignore him but couldn't help but laugh. It was a rare sight to see Zachary being scolded. "Didn't you agree that the loser shouldn't talk to me?"
Zachary sneered, whether in resignation or sarcasm, "Have you ever seen a despicable man like me keep his word?"
Winona fell speechless.
After a moment of silence, a person unexpectedly but also expectedly entered the ward, Fiona, who had been missing for some time. She was wearing a black fitted camisole dress with a coat on top, meticulously dressed from makeup to outfit, but the makeup was a bit heavy, unlike the subtle makeup she used to wear before.
Winona's hospital bed was situated closer to the room's entrance. Fiona spotted it as soon as she entered. Biting her lip, feeling a bit embarrassed, Fiona lowered her head slightly and walked towards Zachary. "Zachary, I heard you were hospitalized. Are you feeling better?"
Her face, despite the heavy makeup, looked fatigue, and her eyes were a bit red from insomnia during this period. This tired look made Fiona appear pitiful and evoked sympathy when facing a man, but it would be too embarrassing in front of Winona, her love rival.
In front of Winona, sheshould always be considered superior, even when she was angry.
