Chapter 49 She actually agreed to another man
Winona was stunned, looking at Matthew in front of her, then at the room behind him and exclaimed, "What are you doing here?"
Matthew smiled and casually explained, "I drank too much with Samuel last night, so I stayed at my aunt's place."
"Oh." Faced with Matthew, Winona didn't know what else to say, perhaps it was guilt, or maybe three years of time had made them estranged.
She tugged at her lips and turned to go downstairs.
"Winona..." Matthew called out to her, handing her a check, "I don't need the money for now, no rush to pay it back."
Winona lowered her gaze and happened to see the amount on the check; it was exactly the three billion dollars she had joked about before.
The check was already signed; as long as she accepted it, she could go to the bank today and transfer the money to Zachary.
Matthew noticed that she was looking at the check without saying anything, and wondered if she was feeling embarrassed. He then asked, "Last time... Did it cause you any trouble? I'm sorry, I didn't know Zachary was also in the car."
He said this without any ulterior motive; he just felt that since she didn't want to talk to Zachary about borrowing money, there must be something she found hard to express.
Winona paused for a moment, then realized he was talking about the incident in the Night Club parking lot.
Thinking of the scene at that time, her face instantly turned red, and she felt that the checks in front of her had turned into hot potatoes, and she didn't dare to accept them.
She still remembered Zachary's warning at that time; if she dared to take Matthew's money, he would break her fingers!
She wasn't sure if that man would actually resort to such bloody violence like breaking fingers, but she knew that if she accepted this money and Zachary found out its source, he would definitely not divorce her and instead become even more entangled with her...
Winona regained her composure, shook her head, and pushed the check back, "I have already solved the money issue, thank you for your kind offer."
Since she didn't accept it, Matthew naturally didn't insist, "Alright then."
It was quite late last night, and Lydia was still resting at this time. Winona sat at the dining table and glanced at the time.
Sarah served her a bowl of beef soup and brought out a plate of tomato spaghetti. "Isn't it the weekend today? Why are you up so early? After finishing the meal, would you like to go back upstairs and catch some more sleep? Young Master specifically instructed in the morning not to disturb you, saying that you were tired last night."
"Ahem..." Winona choked on the beef soup. Zachary must have said that on purpose!
"It's alright, Sarah. I have something to attend to later, I'll eat and leave. When Mom wakes up, let her know."
"Alright," Sarah patted her back affectionately, helping her catch her breath, "Take your time eating, there's no rush for a few minutes."
Winona couldn't speak her mind, so she just smiled and nodded, then hastily finished the food in her bowl, grabbed her bag, and left quickly.
After the birthday banquet, she threw herself into working overtime day and night to earn money, and in the meantime, she called Ryan several times to inquire about their chances of winning the lawsuit.
She had to be prepared for both sides, in case Zachary took the money and then refused to acknowledge it, she needed a countermeasure. Who knew how long he would be angry at Fiona?
Just thinking about it made her restless... Wasn't Fiona rated as the most beautiful dancer in a millennium by the media?
They said no man could escape her pursuit, so how come she couldn't even win over her infatuated ex-boyfriend after returning to the country for so long?
She was starting to doubt the authenticity of these rumors!
While Winona was busy on her side, Zachary was also busy on his side, preparing for the signing with PUD Company and completing a lot of preliminary work.
After finally finishing the urgent documents in his hands that night, he received a call from Samuel.
Zachary picked up the phone and asked, "Where are you?"
"Working late at the office." Zachary heard the background music playing through the receiver, and it was not the kind of serious music that one would expect. "Is the Anderson Group going bankrupt? That's why you're so idle every day?"
Samuel didn't back down at all and replied, "Well, you're making so much money, spending it like there's no tomorrow. Are you planning to splurge on a diamond coffin for your funeral? I saw a news story before about a husband who was the boss of a major company. He worked his whole life to provide for his family, but died young and left behind a large inheritance. Six months later, his wife, who had earned millions alongside him, married his former assistant..."
The veins on Zachary's forehead twitched, unsure if it was from staying up too late or from a momentary dizziness. He pinched his temple and interrupted Samuel, "Shut up."
Just then, Dylan knocked on the door and entered, "Mr. Bailey, here are the documents you requested..."
Before Dylan could finish his sentence, he felt a chill run down his spine. When he looked up, he met Zachary's cold gaze, as if covered by a layer of frost.
Zachary shifted his gaze away from Dylan, lit a cigarette, and tiredly leaned back in his office chair. He impatiently said to the boring person on the phone, "Get to the point if you have something to say, otherwise hang up."
Samuel could hear the man's irritation and thought of something, so he asked, "Are you short of money lately? That's why you're so irritable."
Zachary was not in a great mood and couldn't be bothered with such a boring question. Samuel sensed his silence and raised an eyebrow, "Have you really run into some trouble?"
"...No."
"Then why would your wife go to Matthew for a loan? I thought it was for your sake."
Samuel happened to overhear Winona and Matthew's conversation in the corridor that day. It was originally an insignificant matter that he had forgotten, but now, with Zachary's abnormal state recently and his frequent overtime, it suddenly came to mind.
Zachary's cigarette paused mid-air, and a shadow covered his usually cold and firm features, giving them a chilling touch. It seemed that the woman hadn't taken his words to heart at all and actually dared to borrow money from Matthew!
