Chapter 247 Let's Try Again
Nova cleared his throat. "I just feel that after so many years, it's unlikely for anyone to come back, but it's not certain. Whether they come back or not is none of our business, but that house is really unlucky. It has become a famous haunted house in Langel. What kind of job did you take there? Did you run into a scammer?"
Winona didn't know how much Nova knew about her mother's passing, but she decided to take a chance. "Aunt, my mother's death wasn't just an accident, but all these years, grandpa and I haven't found any useful clues. Do you know if my mom had any close friends or acquaintances?"
Nova turned back to arranging flowers. "Your mom was always focused on her work. She could stay indoors for ten days or half a month without going out. She didn't talk about gossip, didn't surf the internet. Why would she waste time socializing with people?"
"Do you think this has anything to do with Carlos?"
After years of searching, all that was known was that Carlos did not show up to meet her that night, and the rest remained a mystery.
Nova had heard before that Carlos's second spouse wasn't easy to get along with and wasn't kind to Winona either. Still, she didn't expect that the relationship between Winona and Carlos have deteriorated to the point where Winona addresses Carlos by his name. "It's even less likely. Your dad is just a weak and cowardly person. Otherwise, he wouldn't have let you be bullied by your stepmother who threw tantrums and acted stubborn without any real ability or background all these years. If your mom's death wasn't really an accident, it's unlikely that he would be the culprit. He doesn't have that kind of ability or courage."
Winona was speechless.
Perhaps it was because Winona was a reminder of Carlos's past humiliation. Every time he saw her, he was reminded of his shameful history.
"Did my mom ever mention her ex-boyfriend to you?"
"Isn't her first love your father?" Nova's expression did not seem deceitful. Winona was momentarily uncertain whether Nova genuinely didn't know or simply chose not to disclose. "Winona, although I share a good rapport with your mother, you are well aware of her character. When it comes to such personal matters, she most certainly wouldn't confide in me."
Having acquired no useful information, Winona went straight to the villa.
Due to a process that couldn't be interrupted halfway, Winona arrived home a little later than the night before. It was almost nine o'clock, and the fast-food restaurants downstairs were already closed, so she just made a bowl of instant noodles.
Just as she was about to start eating, the doorbell rang.
It was the kind of persistent ringing that disturbed the peace, leaving her in a state of unrest.
Winona rose and approached, peering through the peephole, only to be obstructed by a fleshy entity, rendering everything beyond invisible.
In such a circumstance, only a fool would open the door. She was on the verge of turning back to eat her instant noodle, and calling the building management to drive away the individual. However, she then heard Zachary's voice. "Winona, please open the door."
Winona replied, "You move away whatever is blocking the peephole first."
A few seconds later, she looked again, and indeed, it was Zachary standing outside. He kept pressing the doorbell and knocking on the door.
She opened the door a crack. "What do you want?"
The strong smell of alcohol seeped in through the crack as Zachary leaned his head to look through the gap. His forehead bore a mark from the peephole, and combined with his drunken appearance, it seemed somewhat funny.
"Winona, let's try again," Zachary said.
Winona was puzzled. "Try what?"
Zachary pushed the door but couldn't open it. He tried a few different ways but failed, so he started squeezing his body through the crack.
He was clad in just a shirt, a formal attire. However, it was unclear whether he had forgotten to wear the tie or had misplaced it along the way. The collar of the shirt had been rudely yanked apart, with the topmost button left dangling precariously.
Winona's strength was no match for a drunkard like him. His body blocked the way, and she couldn't really push him away forcefully. After a few attempts, Zachary managed to squeeze through.
With her arms crossed, Winona looked at him coldly. "What are you trying to do?"
She didn't pay much attention to Zachary's suggestion of trying again because she didn't understand the meaning behind it.
Zachary, totaly drunk, was unsteady on his feet, even just standing there. His eyes were slightly red from alcohol, and his lips were also tinted red. "This time, I'll be more gentle."
Winona listened to him as if she were listening to something abstruse. "Zachary, are you under a lot of stress lately? Should I introduce you to a therapist? Maybe it could help."
With his thoughts muddled, Zachary only caught the words "therapist" from Winona's long string of words and immediately frowned. "Did Samuel tell you that?"
Well, there was no point in trying to communicate with a drunk person.
Winona turned to walk into the living room, her noodles about to go mushy.
Zachary quickly grabbed her.
With his limbs not cooperating well at the moment, he stumbled, and most of his weight fell on Winona.
Winona almost stumbled but managed to steady herself by grabbing the wall, a bit annoyed as she turned back. "Zachary, what are you..."
Before she could finish her sentence, Zachary had already grabbed her face and kissed her as if trying to prove something urgently and irresistibly. "I'm not sick. I just can't let go."
He held her waist, pressing her against the wall. Their bodies were tightly pressed together, the scorching heat seeping through the thin fabric onto Winona's body, Their close proximity revealed even the slightest bodily response, leaving the tiniest of reactions nowhere to hide.
Winona was a bit dazed at first, but being pinned by him in this moment, she instantly became alert.
"What are you up to?" He was blatantly using alcohol as an excuse for his desires, feigning intoxication and vulnerability in her presence.
Winona said, "Zachary, back off. If you dare make another move to kiss me, I'll sew your mouth shut."
