Chapter 369 When Did You Buy the Couple's Watches?
The dude was just about to grab the wristwatch when he got this creepy feeling like someone was watching him. He looked up and there was Zachary, not too far away.
Zachary's face was all serious, lips tight, eyes locked on the watch in Winona's hand.
The vibe was totally off.
Feeling the tension, the dude pulled his hand back. "Miss Sullivan, just remembered I got something to do. Gotta bounce."
And with that, he dipped out.
Winona turned, speechless. She was about to chew Zachary out for scaring that person off, but then she noticed like two-thirds of the people there were staring at them. What used to be a low-key corner was now the main attraction, thanks to him.
So, she swallowed her words, acted like she didn't know him, and walked away.
Before leaving, she carefully put the watch back in its velvet box and slipped it into her bag.
She handled it like it was some priceless antique.
Zachary's face got even darker. "Is that watch super important to you?"
Winona didn't say much, just let out a small "Um."
With all those eyes on her and reporters around, she didn't dare say much to him. Those folks had eagle eyes; even a quick glance between two people could spill the beans on a relationship.
It had happened before.
Honestly, it wouldn't be a big deal if they got found out. She wasn't in showbiz, and these days, divorced couples getting back together or breaking up and making up was pretty normal. But the creep behind the acid attack was still out there. Who knew if that psycho had any spies at the event?
Seeing her admit it so easily, Zachary felt a bitter taste in his mouth. "Matthew's got the same watch on his wrist."
Maybe she didn't know, and it was Matthew trying to stir the pot, setting her up.
Otherwise, why did he keep asking Zachary if the watch looked good?
It looked terrible; he'd never seen something so ugly.
"Mm," Winona said again. Seeing Zachary still tailing her and more people staring, she lowered her voice without turning around, "Stop following me. Everyone's watching."
Already pissed about the watch and now seeing Winona trying to shake him off, Zachary's anger grew. He thought about just pulling her into his arms to let everyone know what was up. "When did you two get those couple's watches?"
The watch looked obviously old, and although Winona was reluctant to reveal his identity, she wasn't the type to date two people at the same time, so the watch must have been bought a long time ago.
Winona was shocked.
No wonder Zachary was being so snarky; he was jealous again.
She sneered, "I really don't know. If you're curious, ask my mom. The watch is hers, so she must know. Also, the one on Matthew's wrist belongs to Mrs. Watson. They bought matching best friend stuff. If you're so blind you can't tell the difference between men's and women's watches, you might as well donate your eyes."
He quickly glanced over at Matthew, knowing the guy had bad intentions. Matthew met his gaze and raised his glass from afar.
He was holding the glass with the hand wearing the watch.
Zachary kept his mouth shut.
He wanted to chop that hand off.
When he turned back, Winona was already gone. He looked around, but Frank's voice came from behind, "She's dodging you like the plague."
Frank said, "I heard you found the two who threw the acid? Get anything out of them?"
Zachary's tone was icy. "That's none of your business."
"If it was really someone from The Turner Family who ordered them, who do you think could find the real culprit easier than me?"
Frank was sure Zachary wouldn't get any solid evidence pointing to the mastermind. If there were any traces, he would've caught them ages ago.
Zachary was quiet for a moment. "One night, they got drunk and woke up with a bag full of cash and a note with detailed info about Winona and two choices. Even her visit to Everglade Penitentiary was on there. One choice was to scare her, but it had to be brutal. They'd get double the money afterward. The other choice was to kill her, and the money would be tenfold, with arrangements to send them abroad to dodge trouble. Those two were greedy but didn't have the guts to kill."
Frank's usually calm face turned dark. "He didn't want to kill Winona, so he picked those two cowards on purpose."
Keeping Winona alive meant he could use her as leverage when needed.
Zachary frowned. "I've already had my assistant contact your secretary this afternoon. We can consider the collaboration, but the condition is that the contract is void, and you stay out of her business."
Frank said, "In that case, let's not collaborate. Collaboration needs unity. With your attitude, I'm afraid you'll sabotage me."
Zachary was about to reply when a woman appeared in front of him.
"Mr. Bailey," it was a young woman Zachary had seen at the banquet before, the only daughter of some company's boss. But that company was in financial trouble and looking for investment. "I heard the Bailey Group's tech company recently developed a medical robot that can do basic health checks at home, monitor patients' health, and provide care functions..."
"Sorry," Zachary cut her off, "This robot hasn't been officially released yet. It's a trade secret, and we can't share details right now."
The woman, in a red dress with sexy, wavy hair, had a mature look and style.
She wasn't really into the robot; she just looked it up to find a topic that might interest Zachary. But he shut it down right away.
As she scrambled for another topic, Zachary, out of character, introduced, "This is Frank from the Turner Family in Mode City, the current head of the Turner Family, planning to expand into Dreamopolis. Frank took the Turner Family from the brink of bankruptcy to the top of Mode City in just ten years. The elite circle in Dreamopolis might need to reshuffle."
Zachary then said to Frank, "Don't just focus on making money. You should find a woman to settle down with. Otherwise, all this wealth might end up with outsiders."
Frank had been wondering why Zachary suddenly started hyping him up, only to see the woman's eyes light up as she stared at him.
