Chapter 678 Never Part Even in Death

Anthony didn't say a word, but it was obvious he had no plans to get out of the car.

Rebecca opened the driver's side door, one hand on the door frame and the other on the handle, bending down to look at him. "We broke up. You can't just stay in my car."

"Are you sure you really want to break up?"

Rebecca nodded quickly. She felt like a miserable serf rebelling against a tyrant. Emotions didn't matter anymore; what mattered was her desire to be free.

Anthony nodded and said, "The Winona case is pretty complicated. There are witnesses and video evidence. Even if she didn't kill Maeve, Maeve died in the pool. Without proof that she got out of the pool after being pushed or that someone else did it, she could be charged with manslaughter."

Rebecca quickly jumped back into the car, grabbed Anthony's arm, and leaned her head on his shoulder, her voice soft and pleading. "Honey."

Anthony was silent.

That was fast. She had just upgraded his status.

He raised an eyebrow. "Didn't we break up?"

"Who said that? Who's spreading such nasty rumors?" Rebecca straightened up, indignant. "My boyfriend is handsome, strong, and a top professional with an undefeated record. I'd have to be blind to break up with him."

She raised her hand as if taking an oath. "Alive, we stay together. Dead, our ashes mix. Not just mix, but stirred together to show my commitment to never leaving you."

She stopped before she made herself sick. If she threw up in front of him, all her words would be for nothing.

Rebecca looked at Anthony, batting her eyes. "Honey, if it really comes down to those two scenarios you mentioned, is there no chance of winning? If she's convicted of manslaughter, how long would the sentence be? If there's a trial, you'll take the case, right?"

Anthony smiled and gently removed her hand from his arm. "Not necessarily."

"What do you mean, not necessarily?" Rebecca was anxious. "You're the lawyer for the Bailey Group. Winona is your boss's wife, and you're friends with Zachary. You have to take the case."

"There are other lawyers in the Bailey Group, a whole team of them. Zachary has other friends too. And I have no obligation. So whether I take it or not is still up in the air."

That meant there was room for negotiation.

"So what do I have to do for you to take it?"

Anthony leaned closer, his voice deep and magnetic, the kind that could make someone shiver. "Maybe if you sweet-talk me, I'll be in a good mood and take it."

"That's not appropriate," Rebecca said, looking troubled. "Zachary doesn't seem like the type to sweet-talk anyone. He'd probably just make people mad. You've been his friend for years; you know that better than anyone."

Anthony thought, Is that what I meant?

Zachary hadn't driven him crazy, but she was about to.

He said irritably, "I meant you should sweet-talk me."

Rebecca looked at him like he was speaking nonsense. "Winona is his wife. He should be the one making the effort. Why should I get involved? Do you think I'm that easy? As her best friend, I've already done my part by trying to help."

Seeing Anthony's stunned expression, Rebecca felt great. She turned and closed the car door, buckling her seatbelt.

Trying to trick her? Not a chance.

The car stopped outside Anthony's building. As he unbuckled his seatbelt, he asked, "Aren't you coming up to see Reba?"

"No, hurry up and get out." Rebecca was as smug as a rooster that had just won a fight.

Anthony said, "If we lose the case, she'll have to wait in prison for the appeal."

Rebecca forced a smile. "I just remembered, I haven't seen Reba in a while."

Under Anthony's raised eyebrow, she changed her tune. "I miss her. After all, I brought her home. Since we're here, I might as well go up and see her."

She turned off the engine and unbuckled her seatbelt, her face serious.

Anthony asked, "Not happy?"

"Very happy," Rebecca said, stretching her smile. "I'm thrilled. Let's go. I can't wait to see her."

Upstairs, as soon as Anthony opened the door, Reba came bounding out, heading straight for him. He reached out to pet her, but she stopped short and turned to jump on Rebecca instead.

With Rebecca around, Reba always chose her.

Despite all the care and attention he gave her, including hiring a dog walker, it was disheartening.

Rebecca played with the dog for a while before turning to Anthony. "So, what do I have to do for you to take the case?"

She hadn't forgotten her mission.

Anthony, busy with his laptop, looked up with a half-smile. "I told you, sweet-talk me. Maybe I'll be in a good mood and take it."

Rebecca had never sweet-talked a man before, but years of watching romantic dramas had taught her a thing or two.

For a man without money, give him money. For a man lacking love, give him love. For Anthony, it was like this.

She moved his laptop to the coffee table and changed her position, kneeling beside him. "Come on."

He hadn't meant this kind of sweet-talking. A few sweet words like a normal couple would have sufficed. But since she was already here...

Anthony placed his hand on her waist, pulling her into his lap, and kissed her.

Rebecca's deep eyes, her clean, delicate cheeks, and her long hair falling over Anthony created an intimate, charged scene.

In the quiet living room, the only sounds were Reba's occasional noises and the soft sounds of their lips meeting.

At some point, they had shifted from sitting to Rebecca lying down with Anthony partially on top of her.

Anthony's couch was wide, soft, and comfortable, almost like her expensive bed at home.

But as the kiss deepened, Rebecca's body tensed. Her eyes widened in disbelief as she pushed him away. "You... you..."
