Chapter 210: Coming for her

The person in front of her turned out to be...Daniel?

The things in Winona's hands fell to the ground from the impact, and her phone dropped as well. Without being close to her ear, the call automatically switched to speakerphone.

Matthew's voice came through clearly from the speaker, "We have a meeting this afternoon to discuss the design proposal for the Drunken Building. If you can't make it, we can do a video call."

Daniel looked at the scattered design drafts about Traverse City on the ground and smirked, "Winona, you sure are busy."

A-level restorers and B-level restorers worked in separate office areas. During this period of time, Winona had come to work and hadn't left her workstation within a five-meter range, except for going to the bathroom. If she hadn't run into Daniel today, she would almost forget about the person who had given her a hard time on her first day at work.

"Fortunately, you're not busy," she replied.

According to her colleagues, Daniel worked overtime almost every day, hoping to get promoted to A-level. Although there was just one level of difference between A and B, the difference in salary was huge.
Daniel gave her a resentful glance and turned away.
Not to mention picking up the spilled papers caused by him, he didn't even apologize.
Winona watched his figure and said, "Daniel, at the very least, you are a well-respected senior in the museum. Even if you don't apologize for bumping into someone and spilling their things, you should still have the decency to pick them up, right?"
Daniel clenched his teeth. He already had a serious look, and with a stern face, he appeared quite fierce, resembling a disciplinary headmaster. "How were you raised by your family? This is how you treat your seniors."
"I'm sorry, I'm an orphan, so it would be better for you to pick it up, so as not to invite more ridicule. I just don't know who caused this embarrassment," Winona replied. She could pick it up herself, but with someone like Daniel, the more she yielded, the more he would bully her.
"Don't think you're superior just because you're A-level certified. The museum evaluates every three months, and whether or not you can retain this position is uncertain," Daniel retorted.
"You should be worried about yourself. It's not easy to move from B to A, but you really don't need to target me. Even if I am demoted from A-level, you might not be able to make it to A-level. The number of A-level restorers is not predetermined, it's based on skill," Winona fired back.
Winona was the kind of person who killed with words, knowing exactly what Daniel cared about the most, and purposely poking at him.
Since Daniel didn't care for her as a junior, why should she respect him as a senior?
"..."
They were standing in the corridor outside of the workshop, where people could come by at any moment. Daniel was concerned about his image and couldn't afford to lose face, so he bent down, picked up the scattered papers, threw them at Winona, and then turned away in anger.
Twenty minutes later,
Caleb brought Daniel to the workshop. Daniel, who previously seemed like he wanted to rip her apart, now wore a smug expression on his face. Winona had a foreboding feeling.
Sure enough, Caleb's next words were, "There is a rule in the museum that employees are not allowed to take on private projects outside of their official work. Daniel, regarding your report about Windy taking on private projects, in order to avoid negative implications for everyone, I will publicly address it here. I am aware that Windy is taking on outside work, but she has not signed a contract with our museum. In other words, she is merely providing assistance. Even if she takes a day off for three days, the museum has no authority to intervene."
He chose to announce it in front of everyone because he knew Daniel's personality. If he didn't make it clear this time, who knows what bigger trouble might arise behind his back.
Daniel's smug expression froze on his face. "Director, you're being biased. Aren't you afraid of others having objections?"
"Those with objections can come to my office for clarification," he glanced at Daniel, slightly annoyed, and said, "Daniel, don't be so obsessed. Whether or not you can be rated as A has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not Windy is an A-level restorer."
This episode came and went quickly, and although some people were not happy, they didn't show it. Everyone knew that taking on private jobs can make money, but not everyone can do it. Those things are precious and only those who are famous in the industry can give you the opportunity to try them out.

So even though they were jealous, everyone didn't feel too unbalanced, except for Daniel.

Regarding this, Winona was very understanding. She wasn't money, so how could she make everyone like her?

...

The Traverse City project is scheduled to officially start next month. For such a big project, in order to have good luck, specialized individuals were hired to determine the best dates for construction. The start date cannot be changed, so they could only shorten the preparation time. The entire department was working overtime, and Winona was no exception.

After work, when she drove home, it was already quite late.

There were few parking spaces in the apartment complex, and if she arrived late, there would be no spots available. So she parked her car outside. Just as she was about to get out of the car, two men approached and knocked on her window.

It was spring now, and it was still a bit cold at night. She had to wear a coat over her long-sleeved shirt, while the two men were only wearing short-sleeved t-shirts, revealing their muscular arms.

It was obvious that they were here for her.

Because she saw them look at her license plate before coming over, their target was clear.

Winona locked her car and dialed the emergency number on her phone. Her finger hovered over the dial button as she opened the car window slightly, about the width of a finger: "What's the matter?"

The other party squinted their eyes and carefully looked at her face in the photo on their phone screen: "Are you Winona?"

Winona: "Yes."

"Carlos is your father?"

She was too familiar with this opening. Three years ago, when Carlos owed a loan shark money, they used the same lines when they came looking for her, so she instinctively denied it without thinking: "No."

"Huh, we have thoroughly investigated all your information before coming here. You want to deceive us? We're not going to do anything today, we just want to let you know that Carlos borrowed two billion from our company, and he said his daughter would help him repay it..."

The other party threw a business card into the gap, "This card has our company's address and phone number. The repayment date is in a week."

Winona tightly clenched her fingers, her face looking unusually grim. The scene from three years ago where she was chased by loan sharks like a drowning dog was replaying itself: "His daughter's name is Layla, and I have no blood relation with him." She took a paternity test from her drawer and handed it over: "Just did a paternity test, still warm. If you want to collect the debt, go find her."

"I don't care if you're his biological daughter or not. Carlos sent us a photo, and that Layla, we will find her too. After all, judging by your car, you don't look like someone who can repay over two billion. If you're late, when we come to find you next time, it won't be two billion, but three billion."

"Carlos is completely broke now. Even if your interest rates are high and don't require asset collateral, why do you think he can repay so much money?"
