Chapter 676 What's Going on with Winona

He barely managed to keep his cool as he pulled the car over to the side of the road. "Mr. Bailey, the person who died is Maeve."

Zachary's eyebrows shot up. "Who did you say?"

"Ms. Harrington, Maeve, the one who gives you massages." Worried that Zachary might confuse her with someone else, he clarified, "The incident happened at the pool. The police are calling everyone from the party to the station for statements. You should be up soon."

Last night, Winona had been tied up in the garden, which was close to the pool. During the time she was gone, Maeve was also not in the banquet hall.

Zachary ordered coldly, "Don't tell Mrs. Bailey about this."

If the police didn't question her, there was no need for her to know about Maeve's death.

Winona had slept for quite a while. When she woke up, the sun was already setting, casting a soft orange glow through the curtains.

Zachary was sitting on the bed next to hers, scrolling through his phone. Noticing her gaze, he turned to look at her. "You're awake?"

"Yeah," Winona croaked out. "Where did you get a phone?"

Their phones had been confiscated when they were kidnapped.

"Dylan just brought it," Zachary gestured to the packaging on the nightstand. "He got one for you too."

Winona felt lethargic from sleeping so long and didn't want to move. She lay on her side, chatting idly with him. "What are you looking at?"

"News."

Zachary was always either handling work or reading news—financial, political, all boring stuff. Winona was used to it, but she was bored and wanted to talk. "Is the stock market up?"

"I don't know."

"Then what news are you reading?"

Zachary, eager to share, handed her his phone. "It's a survey. The question is, if Lydia and I both fell into the water, who would you save first?"

Winona was silent.

She stared at him like he'd lost his mind. "Are you sure you read that right?"

Zachary nodded. "Yes."

Winona glanced at the screen. He wasn't wrong, but she suspected this survey was something Zachary had Dylan whip up while she was asleep, just to get back at her for saying she was going to see Lydia and leaving him alone in the hospital.

Seeing her silence, Zachary pressed, "Who would you save?"

She was even more convinced this was his doing. Why else would he care so much about the answer?

Winona replied, "Both you and Lydia can swim. You don't need me to save you, so this question doesn't apply to me."

Zachary pursed his lips, looking a bit dissatisfied. "What if I got a cramp and couldn't swim?"

"Then you might as well stay in the water and avoid getting beaten up by Lydia. You'd be the son who cursed his mom to drown and then left her to fend for herself."

Winona sat up and started fiddling with her new phone. She decided to scroll through it out of boredom rather than waste brain cells talking to Zachary.

Zachary felt a bit wronged by her retort. "I didn't ask the question."

Winona didn't look up. "Right, you just happened to find someone with the same dilemma as you."

She handed the phone back to Zachary. "Go ask the nurse for the WiFi password."

Zachary protested, "I'm the patient here. You want me to ask for the WiFi password just so you can scroll through Facebook?"

"The nurses are too busy. If I ask, they won't have time for me. You need to use your charm to win them over."

"Women are more likely to be swayed by a good-looking woman than a man."

Winona looked at him in surprise. "Have you been secretly reading online novels again?"

Zachary didn't deny it. "Isn't it true?"

"Yes, very true. We don't compete with each other anymore."

As they spoke, there was a knock on the door. This time, two uniformed police officers entered. They showed their badges and identified themselves, confirming Zachary and Winona's identities.

"We have a few questions about Maeve's death. Considering Mr. Bailey is still hospitalized, we won't take him to the station, but Winona will need to come with us."

Winona's mind went blank for a moment. She turned to Zachary, eyes wide with disbelief. "Maeve is dead?"

Zachary nodded. "Yes, I'll go to the station with you."

In the car, he called Anthony, who was already at the station because Rebecca had just finished giving her statement.

When they arrived, they were immediately separated.

The police asked Winona for her basic information. "Maeve was found dead in the Fields family's pool. Did you know that?"

"No, I was kidnapped last night. After I was rescued, I went straight to the hospital."

The police were aware of this. "Someone saw you and Maeve alone by the pool, arguing. They said you kicked Ms. Harrington into the pool."

Winona didn't hide anything. "Yes, but it was self-defense. She attacked me first."

She recounted the argument with Maeve in detail. "I threw her a flotation ring and made sure she was stable before I left. Right after that, I was kidnapped. You can check the surveillance footage."

"The cameras were down. According to a witness's video, you did kick Maeve into the pool," the officer said, slamming the table. "I suggest you come clean for a lighter sentence."

Outside in the police station lobby, Rebecca paced anxiously while Anthony calmly worked on his laptop.

She approached him, trying to keep her voice steady. "Why is it taking so long? Do you think something happened?"

Anthony, familiar with the police procedures, glanced at his watch. "It's only been twenty minutes. They haven't finished questioning her yet."

Just then, Zachary emerged from the interrogation room and walked towards them.

Rebecca immediately pointed at him, agitated. "See, he's done. He went in with Winona. Why isn't she out yet?"

Winona and Maeve didn't get along. The police wouldn't suspect her because of that, would they?

Anthony looked at Zachary, his expression serious. "What's going on with Winona?"
