Chapter 378 You Don't even Sleep with Me
Winona was chillin' in the tub, jamming to some tunes when Eva hit her up, asking if she wanted to go shopping the next day.
She took one look at the text and blocked her number right away.
She couldn't believe Eva's nerve. The girl even dragged her own dad into her schemes. Just today at the museum, Eva had stormed off all pissed, and now, a few hours later, she was acting like nothing happened, inviting her to go shopping.
After her bath, Winona dried her hair and slapped on some moisturizer.
The PJs at the Bailey Mansion were still the ones Lydia had picked out—sexy and all. They covered everything but somehow made it feel like nothing was covered, leaving just enough to the imagination.
When Winona strutted out in those PJs, Zachary felt himself getting hard.
Even though he couldn't resist her charm, he still had some sense. So, when he saw her in those sexy PJs, his first thought wasn't to drag her to bed but to remember the doc's advice: no moving, no heavy lifting, and keep it chill.
He felt like he shot himself in the foot. If he knew this would happen, he wouldn't have said the snake was venomous.
But if he hadn't been poisoned, she'd definitely be rocking some long-sleeved, full-length cotton PJs.
Winona grabbed a summer quilt from the wardrobe and set it up on the sofa. The sofa was narrow, but she was slim, so it worked for her.
Zachary pouted for a bit, then noticed Winona had already closed her eyes, looking ready to crash. He couldn't help but say, "I smell like crap."
Winona's voice was muffled and sleepy, "It's cool, I don't care."
That sounded pretty half-hearted.
"If you don't care, why aren't you sleeping with me?"
The room went dead silent.
Winona turned over, too tired to deal. She was really beat.
But it didn't stay quiet for long. He started mumbling and tossing around, "You never lie on the bed without changing clothes or showering. You're a germaphobe; you must be freaking out that I messed up the bed."
It wasn't really about being a clean freak. Her job sometimes left her covered in dust, so she got into the habit of not lying on the bed without showering and changing clothes.
Winona stayed quiet.
She couldn't sleep with his constant muttering, so she sat up on the sofa, glaring at him with a look of grievance, "I can only help you wipe down."
If the injury was on his arm, he could avoid getting it wet while bathing, but it was on his leg, near the thigh. She couldn't exactly hang his leg up with a rope.
Zachary's sulky face instantly lit up with a smile, "Okay."
Just then, Matthew called.
Winona answered the phone while heading to the bathroom, "Matthew?"
One second, Zachary was happy, and the next, he turned into a weak, bedridden patient, groaning, "Oh, my wound suddenly hurts. Is the poison not fully cleared?"
Matthew calling at that time definitely meant he was up to no good.
"Weren't you fine just now? Why the sudden pain?" Winona frowned, turning back to the bed and momentarily forgetting about Matthew on the other end, "Should we call the doc again? Never mind, let's hit the hospital for a full check-up."
Matthew asked, "Is Zachary really hurt?"
"Yeah, he got bitten by a snake," Winona replied, then something clicked, "Wait, how'd you know he was hurt?"
"He had a post saying you were so worried you insisted on feeding him."
Winona glanced at Zachary, who was groaning on the bed like a big baby. This guy was so childish, but she didn't call him out, "The snake was venomous. The doc said he should chill for a few days."
Matthew went quiet for a sec, "What kind of snake has such strong venom? Was it a cobra or something?"
Winona caught a whiff of sarcasm and felt a bit ticked off. They used to be tight, but now he was kicking him when he was down. Not cool, "Did you call for something specific?"
Sensing her mood shift, Matthew apologized, "Sorry, didn't mean it like that. Just curious about the snake. I got bitten during outdoor training with my coach, so I know a bit."
"It had a brownish back with two black lines running through its body. That's all I remember."
"Sounds like a rat snake, but those aren't venomous," he paused, "Without seeing it, I can't be sure, but Zachary should know. The three of us trained in the rainforest back then. It was hot and full of snakes. When we couldn't find food, we had to catch snakes. Samuel and I were too scared, but Zachary wasn't. Knowing the training location and content in advance, he even studied which snakes were venomous. We only caught non-venomous ones to be safe."
Winona stayed silent.
With the phone not on speaker, Zachary couldn't hear Matthew, but he noticed her suspicious look. His groaning even got quieter.
Matthew, still sounding all gentlemanly, suggested, "Why don't you put the phone on speaker? I'll ask him about the snake. He seems in a lot of pain, and the symptoms don't add up. I'll check with the doc if the antivenom dosage was off and get more from the hospital."
"Okay."
She wanted to hear what Zachary had to say.
She couldn't let Matthew's words mess with her head. Suspicion was poison in a relationship, but she needed to clear this up, especially since he had a history.
She put the phone on speaker but didn't hand it to Zachary, knowing he'd probably hang up. "Matthew wants to talk to you."
Zachary didn't respond.
He didn't want to hear Matthew's voice at all.
Matthew said, "Winona told me you got bitten by a snake and the venom's not fully cleared. What kind of snake was it? I'll get more antivenom from the hospital and call a doc to check on you."
Zachary stayed silent.
"Don't dodge treatment."
Matthew was really getting on his nerves!
He couldn't think of a venomous snake that looked like a rat snake, and Matthew kept pushing, "Why don't you ask the bodyguards? They've taken courses and should know."
