Chapter 13 See You in Court at 9 AM Tomorrow
Feeling like the verbal attack had been sufficient, Zachary's tone softened, "Having a little quarrel between spouses can be entertaining, but once it passes, it becomes dull. I don't have time to play this on-again, off-again divorce game with you. Move back tonight, and I won't hold your recent behavior against you."
Winona didn't pay much attention to what he said, nor did she give much thought to what he meant by "janitor." She only heard him belittling her low salary, inability to afford rent, and calling her behavior into question.
"Zachary, have you lost your mind? Even if my salary is low, I would rather sleep under a bridge than move back. Either get a divorce with me straightforwardly, or we'll see each other in court!"
She hung up the phone directly and added him to her blacklist.
Initially, she planned to block his WhatsApp as well, but in the end, she refrained. It was necessary to keep one means of communication for discussing the divorce.
Winona swore that as soon as she obtained the divorce papers, she would immediately block Zachary, that dog, and never have any dealings with him in her lifetime.
At this moment, two colleagues were gossiping nearby, "The handsome man who came this morning to inquire about Windy's situation was so attractive. I wonder if he's married."
Winona was slightly taken aback. The man who came to the studio this morning was Dylan. She had actually seen him, but at that time, she accidentally spilled water and was lazily mopping the floor with a mop, so she ignored him and walked away.
However, she recalled that at that time, Windy happened to be cleaning her workstation.
Those two colleagues continued joking, "He asked what position Windy holds in our studio? Windy was clearly dressed in a janitor's uniform, and she was mopping the floor. Isn't it obvious?"
Winona realized the purpose of Dylan's visit to this place.
Knowing that Zachary had misunderstood, she didn't call to explain. There was no need to clarify about her job to him.
She originally thought that Zachary would quickly agree to the divorce after receiving the lawyer's letter. However, a week had passed, and Zachary hadn't shown any reaction.
Winona was getting a little impatient but could only wait.
After work that day, Rebecca invited her to a popular restaurant nearby. Winona had more flexible working hours, so she went ahead to secure a table.
Not long after she sat down, the restaurant became full, and she felt fortunate to have arrived early as she observed the long queue outside.
As she was about to send the table number to Rebecca via WhatsApp, she heard an unfamiliar voice from above, "Winona, are you alone? Can I join your table? I arrived late, and the waiter said it would be at least a two-hour wait."
Winona looked up and saw Fiona standing in front of her, dressed exceptionally with light makeup. Her features were not particularly exquisite individually, but combined, she was quite beautiful. Just by standing here, she attracted a lot of attention.
Winona decisively refused, "It's inconvenient..."
However, Fiona sat down regardless.
Her face instantly turned cold, "Miss Fiona, don't you understand human speech?"
Fiona looked apologetic, "Are you still mad at me? On the night you and Zachary got married, I didn't intentionally call him. I didn't expect that he would..."
Winona didn't want to hear about the past anymore and interrupted her, "It's not a matter of hate, just pure dislike for a venomous snake."
The conversation had reached this point, and it would be shameless to continue with certain topics.
Fiona remained silent for a few seconds, her gaze complex as she looked at Winona, probing, "I heard that you're going through a divorce with Zachary recently?"
Winona wasn't surprised that she knew about it, but thinking about how Zachary was still clinging to the marriage while eagerly sharing this information with others, Winona couldn't help but curse him internally a thousand times!
Meeting Fiona's inquisitive gaze, Winona put down her phone and smirked mockingly, "Yeah, but he doesn't agree. He sticks to me like chewing gum, impossible to get rid of. It's so annoying! I thought that by asking for a divorce, he would long for Miss Fiona."
She snorted and casually concluded, "So, this is all you amount to, huh?"
Fiona's expression changed repeatedly, becoming increasingly unpleasant. Her hands, resting on her knees, clenched tightly, causing her freshly done nails to dig into her flesh.
Seeing her like this, Winona's mood improved, and she casually teased, "Miss Fiona, could you please free up the seat? It's not appetizing to look at your strange appearance."
Fiona held back her anger, not getting furious as expected. Instead, she ignored Winona and started playing with her phone. In a casual tone, she asked, "Are you getting a divorce as part of a strategic move? Or is it because... Matthew has returned?"
Matthew Watson... Winona's facial expression froze. She hadn't heard that name since she got married, and hearing it now felt like a distant memory.
When did he come back?
Although Winona and Matthew weren't in the same social circle, they had a few mutual friends. Zachary and Matthew were even good friends, but she hadn't received any news.
Seeing Winona stunned, Fiona felt like she had gained an advantage back. The gloom in her brows and eyes dissipated a bit, and she intentionally provoked her, "Why pretend to be innocent? You and him have been in contact these past two years, haven't you? Have you betrayed Zachary behind his back? After all, you almost climbed into his bed back then..."
"Slap!"
A crisp sound of a slap echoed, shocking the people waiting outside the restaurant and interrupting Fiona before she could finish her sentence.
Winona looked at Fiona, who was covering her face in shock. Even she hadn't expected that she would physically strike her like this.
A stinging pain radiated from her palm, reminding her of how forcefully she had slapped Fiona.
"Winona!" a chilling voice came from behind her.
Before she could turn around, Zachary had already reached Fiona, his face dark.
By her side, he looked down at her with an overbearing gaze, his hostility enveloping the surroundings. "What are you doing?"
Zachary's arrival instantly made Fiona, who had been slapped and had a throbbing face, tear up as if she had finally found someone to support her.
Winona, however, showed no fear in the face of the man's questioning and casually shook her sore hand. "Didn't you see? I was hitting someone."
"Zachary," Fiona leaned against the man pitifully, her hands wrapped around his waist, her voice slightly hoarse. "I didn't intentionally provoke Mrs. Sullivan. I just casually mentioned Matthew but didn't expect her to suddenly attack... If I knew Mrs. Sullivan still hadn't forgotten him, I would never have mentioned him."
Hearing the reason, Zachary's eyebrows furrowed deeply, and a mocking curve formed on his thin lips. It seemed that after all these years, she still hadn't forgotten that person.
He stared at Winona with dominance. "Apologize."
Although he anticipated this outcome, it was impossible for him not to feel uneasy when he instantly sided with Fiona without even asking a single question.
But Winona couldn't allow Zachary to see her vulnerability. She raised her face to meet his gaze and suddenly curled her lips, a hint of a provocative and audacious charm blooming between her brows. "No way."
Unless the world was ending, she would never apologize to Fiona!
Zachary's pupils contracted, his lips drooping, tightly forming an arc of displeasure.
"I said apologize, don't make me repeat myself."
His words were filled with anger. Winona thought that she must have done something really terrible to make Zachary this angry, though she didn't know his anger wasn't because she had hit someone...
"I'll say it again, it's not happening!"
After making her stance clear, Winona lost her appetite and picked up her bag, preparing to leave.
But before she could take two steps, her arm was firmly grabbed, followed by Zachary's infuriated voice. "You caused all this trouble just to get a divorce, right? Fine, I'll grant you that. Be at the civil affairs bureau at 9 o'clock tomorrow morning!"
