Chapter 449 Impact on Fetal Development

The stairwell erupted into a chaotic cacophony as someone took a nasty fall. A guy from the Bailey Group standing next to Winona got yanked down a few steps too, but luckily, someone nearby caught him just in time.

When it all went down, Evander was on the other side chatting with his assistant, barely dodging the chaos.

After the tumble, there was this eerie silence. Someone flicked on their phone flashlight, and the beam revealed blood slowly spreading from under the fallen person.

Winona was still pressed against the metal railing. When she realized this, a cold sweat broke out on her back, soaking her clothes and making her shiver.

If no one had caught her, she'd be down there too.

Winona, still in shock, finally snapped out of it and tried to see who had grabbed her. But just as she turned her head, the hand that had held her tight let go. She looked up and met Nicholas's eyes, shadowed by the dim light, showing no emotion.

Her eyes instantly reddened, a mix of fear, relief, and something else.

Evander walked over, looking serious. His face was cold, but his voice was gentle when he spoke to Winona, "Are you okay? Are you hurt?"

Winona replied, "I think I twisted my ankle."

The sharp pain in her ankle, combined with the shock, made it hard for her to stand without leaning on the railing.

Evander told his assistant to take care of her and then went to check on the person lying below. The one who fell was a Bailey Group employee.

Before leaving, he gave Nicholas a hard look. He had a strong feeling Nicholas was Zachary.

He had been unsure in the conference room earlier. He had heard many rumors but had never seen Nicholas in person and couldn't quite picture how much they might resemble each other. Nicholas was wearing a mask, and his demeanor and aura were different from Zachary's. But just now, when he caught Winona, Evander felt as if he were Zachary.

The distance between them was so wide that if his attention hadn't been on her the whole time, he wouldn't have reacted so quickly to the sudden incident and managed to catch her.

He didn't confirm his identity based on a father's intuition, but as a man recognizing another man.

But now wasn't the time for questions; there were too many people around, and there was an injured person down there.

Someone had already called for an ambulance and the police.

Evander squatted nearby, not caring that blood was staining his shoes, and anxiously called out the person's name, "Joshua, Joshua..."

"Uh..."

The person groaned lowly, then slowly opened his blood-covered eyes. His nervous system finally settled down at that moment, and the man let out a few excruciating screams, the pain twisting his voice.

The overhead lights came on; the power was back.

Those not involved in the incident left first, and soon, only people from the Bailey Group and the Ramsey Group remained in the stairwell.

The Bailey Group stayed because the incident happened among them, and the person who fell had asked who tripped him.

The Ramsey Group stayed because Nicholas was injured.

He covered his seemingly uninjured arm and firmly told his assistant, "It's a fracture; I hit it on the railing."

He initially wanted to say it was broken but thought that was too exaggerated and easily debunked, so he settled for a fracture.

The assistant turned to the others and said, "You all go back first. I'll take Mr. Bailey to the hospital."

One person among them looked like they wanted to say something but hesitated and ended up leaving with the others.

Nicholas took note of that person.

Even though he wasn't really the Mrs. Ramsay of the Ramsey family and was just using them as a stepping stone, now that he was in this position, he wasn't going to tolerate any funny business from those around him.

The ambulance showed up pretty fast, but there was only one. The seriously injured guy needed immediate attention, so they couldn't take Winona and Nicholas along.

The cops arrived too.

Richard said, "Miss Sullivan, our Mr. Ramsey is hurt too. I was about to take him to the hospital. Mr. Bailey has to stay and handle things here. Please ride with us to the hospital."

Winona glanced at the Bailey Group folks. Besides those going with the injured to the hospital and those staying to clean up, the rest were all suspects and couldn't leave.

Evander said, "Winona, you go to the hospital with Mr. Ramsey first. I'll come later."

He considered suggesting that Lydia go over to help Winona, given her injured foot and the convenience it would offer.

But he glanced at Nicholas, who was covered like a masked superhero, and kept it to himself, "I'll come over after wrapping things up."

Before Winona could say anything, Nicholas's assistant had already reached out to support her, "Miss Sullivan, lean on my hand to save your strength."

Nicholas's car was parked in the basement, not far from the elevator, but Winona's injured ankle shot pain the moment her foot hit the ground. Once they reached flat ground, she just started hopping on one leg.

Nicholas watched from behind, trembling with fear. The cold sweat from when Winona almost fell hadn't dried yet, and now seeing her hop like this, he started sweating again.

He wanted to just pick her up, but he was now an 'injured person,' and he didn't know if anyone was secretly watching him. He couldn't risk putting her in danger for a moment of worry.

The person who had been walking fine suddenly tripped; he didn't believe it was an accident.

If it weren't for the two steps between that person and Winona and Winona instinctively grabbed the handrail when she was about to fall, he wouldn't have been able to save her in time.

He closed his eyes and recalled carefully. At that moment, the people around the fallen person were all from the Bailey Group. Was it possible that the Bailey Group also had their own people on the inside?

In the two seconds he pondered, Winona had hopped several steps ahead. Nicholas's forehead was throbbing with tension, "Can a pregnant woman hop like that?"

Winona remained silent. She had forgotten she was supposed to be a pregnant woman. She touched her belly. "It's fine. This baby is tough. No amount of hopping will harm it."

Nicholas cursed himself harshly, "Isn't this child supposed to be Mr. Bailey's posthumous child, and you're just..."

He paused before he could scold her. Not only would it be overstepping, but Winona would likely get angry as well.

The information indicated that if a pregnant woman was unhappy, it could affect the baby's development, lead to health issues, or even miscarriage, and lead to postpartum depression.

In severe cases, it could result in difficult labor, putting both lives at risk.

He pursed his lips and softened his voice, "Take it slow, no rush. You've injured your ankle, and tensing it like this could make it worse."

Winona sarcastically retorted, "Isn't Mr. Ramsey supposed to be illiterate? How do you know about medicine?"
