Chapter 72 She slapped him hard
The area of skin that was being rubbed quickly turned red. Winona, who was sleeping, felt the pain. She blinked her eyes open and looked at the person in front of her. Then she frowned and moved back, unhappily muttering, "Zachary, don't touch me..."
As soon as this sentence was uttered, a deadly silence fell in the room, leaving only the heavy sound of their breathing.
If Zachary was able to control his emotions earlier, he was now completely enraged!
Every line of his body exuded vigorous hostility as he pulled her back, leaning over her. "You won't let me touch you; only Matthew can touch you, right? Winona, should I say you're smart for knowing how to arouse a man's desire for conquest, or should I say you're foolish? With so many men in New York, you had to choose my friend? Or did you think that women are more important to me than friends?"
Winona didn't answer. She was pinned beneath him, her hands held captive. She didn't respond at all; it was as if she had fallen asleep again.
Zachary's gaze fell on her flushed face, and his Adam's apple rolled. Annoyed, he unbuttoned the top three buttons of his collar.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door, accompanied by a deep male voice. "Winona, are you there?"
It was Matthew!
Zachary's face turned extremely dark. If the woman in front of him wasn't sick, he might have ended up making her cry!
After waiting for a few minutes, Zachary finally went to open the door. The person outside seemed a little anxious.
When Zachary opened the door, Matthew's hand was still in the position of knocking, but he paused slightly when he saw who opened the door. "Zachary?"
He glanced at the torn marks on Zachary's collar and realized that he... had disturbed the two of them.
"Since you're here, Winona should be fine. I won't disturb you," he said.
He wasn't alone; he had brought a doctor with him.
Zachary stepped aside. "Come in; she's sick, running a high fever. Let the doctor prescribe some medicine for her."
Matthew didn't refuse. He had brought the doctor here to check on Winona after hearing something off in her voice over the phone.
To avoid suspicion, he didn't follow the doctor into Winona's bedroom, but instead sat in the living room with Zachary.
During that time, Zachary handed him a cigarette, and the two of them walked to the window. "Did she call you to say she's sick?"
Matthew shook his head. "No, I happened to have something to ask her for help with, and I could tell from her voice on the phone."
Zachary stared at him for a few seconds, then smiled leisurely behind the smoke, his features not clearly visible.
"Why are you so concerned about her? Do you regret not helping her earlier?"
Matthew not only knew that she was sick but also that she moved here from Regal Oaks. Just because her voice sounded off, he went through the trouble of bringing a doctor with him. This whole ordeal looks suspicious, no matter how you look at it.
To this, Matthew spoke frankly, "It's not exactly regret, but I do feel somewhat sorry. The amount of money she borrowed was not insignificant, and I just didn't expect her to be so desperate..."
He had never expected that she would turn to Zachary without getting a definite answer from him first.
"So, are you planning to pursue her again to make up for the regret in your heart?"
Matthew furrowed his brow slightly, momentarily unsure if Zachary was joking or serious.
He smirked lightly, "I didn't expect you to overthink things too."
In the room, Winona gradually regained consciousness. She lay quietly, waiting for the doctor to administer the injection. The bedroom door was open, and she could hear the conversation between the two outside.
She wasn't interested in their topic; it was all in the past.
The dizziness and pain caused by the cold had worn down her spirits, and before long, she began to feel drowsy again. The faint sensation of the needle piercing her vein didn't even register her attention.
Just as Winona was about to fall asleep, Matthew's voice resounded from outside once more, "The audio from back then, did you release it?"
With that sentence, Winona's sleepiness vanished in an instant.
Audio... she forcefully made herself alert, thinking about the impact the audio's exposure had on her during that time. Her heart ached at the memories.
The mental blows and the online abuse were almost enough to drive someone to death. She had to take medication to control her emotions for a long time.
But back then, she had always believed that Matthew leaked the audio, so she didn't investigate the true cause...
Zachary, by the window, spoke in a nonchalant tone, "Who told you?"
Matthew replied, "No one told me. I looked into it later, but couldn't find any useful information. It just crossed my mind today, so I thought I'd ask you since... you were there at the time."
When Winona sought him out, he was discussing matters with Zachary. At that time, he thought she wanted his help, so he asked Zachary to rest behind the screen.
Seconds turned into minutes, but Zachary didn't provide an answer. And to Winona, that was undoubtedly confirmation.
