Chapter 443 Meeting the Parents
Ever since Timothy called, Winona had been feeling off all afternoon, though she couldn't quite put her finger on why. Maybe it was just a woman's intuition.
Rebecca rang Winona up later, inviting her over for dinner. "My mom just got back from a trip to the prairie and brought back a ton of beef and lamb. She has been cooking it every day. I swear, I smell like a lamb now," Rebecca said.
Winona couldn't help but laugh. She could almost see Rebecca sniffing her clothes over the phone. "Winter's coming soon. If I wear anything with fur, people might think a sheep escaped. You better come help me eat some of this stuff," Rebecca added.
"Alright," Winona agreed. She had a lot on her mind and needed to talk to Rebecca.
The Daviss lived on an island in the middle of a lake, right next to a wetland park. Winona parked on the bridge and walked over with some gifts she'd picked up for Rebecca's parents.
The island had become a hot tourist spot lately, with light shows, food stalls, and costume performances at night. By 7 PM, local cars weren't allowed in. It was just past 6 PM, and the place was already packed with brake lights.
The Daviss' villa was in a fancy community, away from the hustle and bustle, offering a peaceful retreat.
Winona knocked on the door, and Rebecca's excited voice came from inside. "Coming, just a sec."
Before Winona could step in, Rebecca rushed out and slammed the door behind her.
From inside, Natalie Davis's voice scolded, "You're still so reckless? Let Winona in to sit. With your hospitality, it's a wonder she puts up with you. Anyone else would've ditched you by now."
Rebecca ignored her and pulled Winona along. She whispered, "Anthony's here."
Winona asked, "So what if he's here? Why are you so worked up?"
"Are you emotionally numb? I'm not excited; I'm stressed," Rebecca said, leaning in close so Winona could see her face even in the dim light. "I told my mom yesterday that the guy her friend set her up with was a jerk—a chauvinistic, self-centered egomaniac. She cursed him out for two hours and even cursed her friend. But now, Anthony shows up."
Despite her strong opinions about Anthony, Rebecca couldn't deny his good qualities. "With his looks and charm, plus his smooth talk, it's no wonder we're in this mess," she said.
Winona could already piece together what had happened without Rebecca spelling it out. Natalie Davis must have been thrilled with Anthony, and all the scolding from the night before had probably turned into criticism of Rebecca.
After all, in the eyes of the older generation, Anthony was the perfect son-in-law. He was disciplined, respectable, had a good job, and seemed loyal. Plus, he was good-looking and well-spoken.
Thinking about this, Winona asked, "Why don't you and Anthony just have a proper talk?"
Rebecca looked at her in surprise and said, "Can a dog understand human speech?" She had made it clear to Anthony yesterday that they weren't a good match.
"What nonsense are you spouting?" Natalie said as she opened the door and overheard their conversation. She grabbed a feather duster from the shoe cabinet and pretended to hit Rebecca with it. But she couldn't bring herself to actually hit her hard, so it was more of a scare tactic.
"You know you don't understand human speech, yet you still have the nerve to shout about it everywhere. Afraid others won't know you do nothing but eat and cause trouble at home like a Husky?" she said.
Rebecca quickly hid behind Winona, clinging to her arm and peeking out at Natalie. She said to Winona, "Look, ever since she met Anthony, she's been biased towards him and even seen me as a Husky. I can't imagine what the future will be like."
Natalie glared at Rebecca, then noticed Winona holding gifts in both hands and quickly took them. "Winona, look at her. She's still acting like a child," she said.
She glanced at the shopping bags, which contained alcohol and her usual skincare products. "And you, if you bring gifts next time, I'll make you come over every day as punishment," she added.
Winona obediently replied, "Alright, I'll listen to you. I won't bring anything next time."
Rebecca chimed in, "You say that every time, but you still bring stuff."
In the living room, Anthony and Kevin were playing chess.
Natalie placed the gifts on the shoe cabinet and said, "Kevin, Winona is here."
Winona greeted, "Mr. Davis, Mr. Lewis."
Kevin responded, "Winona. Have a seat. We'll start dinner soon. Anthony and I just need to finish this game."
Rebecca pulled Winona to the living room sofa and shoved a piece of cantaloupe into her mouth. She asked, "Have you found out Nicholas's identity? Is he really Zachary?"
