Chapter 660 Quite Romantic
Zachary reached out and ruffled Winona's hair. "I might be busy until late tonight. Can you keep an eye on Mom for me?"
With that, he turned to Richard and said, "Let's roll."
Richard nodded at Winona. "Alright, Mrs. Bailey."
Winona sensed that Richard had something else to say but held back because Zachary interrupted. She frowned and rolled her eyes at Zachary, but he had already left and didn't see it.
By the hospital bed, Evander sat in a chair, looking exhausted. He held Lydia's hand, his thoughts entirely focused on her. Winona had planned to persuade him to rest for a while, but seeing this, she wisely kept quiet. "Dad, I'll go home and grab some clothes for Mom."
Evander nodded. "Okay. She doesn't like wearing regular clothes to sleep. Could you bring her pajamas too..."
Before he could finish, the door to the room opened. Zachary, who had left earlier, stood at the door, slightly out of breath. He looked at the surprised faces in the room and patted himself down. "I think I left my phone in here."
Before Winona could respond, a familiar ringtone came from Zachary's jacket pocket, accompanied by a buzzing sound that made it seem like an old-fashioned phone.
Well, this was awkward.
Zachary's face remained expressionless as he pulled out his phone. "What's up?"
Richard's voice came through the phone. "Mr. Bailey, where are you?"
He had just gone to the restroom, and when he came out, Mr. Bailey was nowhere to be found.
Zachary replied, "I left something in the room. I'll come up and get it. You go ahead and start the car and wait for me at the entrance."
After hanging up, he looked at Winona. "Let's go. I'll take you home."
Winona remained silent.
'So, I'm the "thing left in the room," huh?'
As Zachary turned, he realized his legs felt weak and instinctively grabbed the door frame for support.
Earlier, downstairs, a person carrying flowers had brushed past him. The person wore a disposable mask, and the exposed part of their face was unremarkable. Yet, this ordinary person had made his heart race inexplicably.
There was no concrete evidence to suggest anything was wrong with that person; it was just a gut feeling.
But when he turned to look, the person had vanished.
In the bustling lobby, it was as if the person had disappeared into thin air.
Without thinking, Zachary had rushed back upstairs, unable to catch the elevator, so he had climbed the stairs, all the way from the first floor to the 16th.
Winona crossed her arms and smirked. "Which foot tripped over which this time?"
"Why are you staring at me like that?"
Winona had been staring at him without saying a word, which was unsettling.
"I was wondering if your current state, stumbling every few steps, could handle sleeping in the living room for a night."
Zachary fell silent.
He had a bad feeling. "Why are you asking?"
He had heard enough of Samuel's tragic experiences to develop a conditioned response to the mention of the living room.
Winona gave a sarcastic smile and, with an air of indifference, walked past him toward the elevator. "Take a guess."
Richard had already brought the car to the entrance. Seeing Winona come down with Zachary, he realized that the "forgotten item" Mr. Bailey mentioned was Winona.
He couldn't help but glance at Zachary's face.
The glance was so deliberate that Zachary couldn't ignore it, especially since he was already annoyed with Winona. He frowned and asked, "Why are you looking at my face?"
"Just checking if it's red."
Winona couldn't help but laugh. When Zachary looked at her, she turned her head to look out the window, pretending to be aloof.
Just as Zachary was about to speak, his phone rang. Although Winona appeared to be looking out the window, her gaze was actually on his reflection in the glass.
She watched him pull out his phone, the screen's light reflecting off the window, making it impossible to see the details.
But she noticed Zachary hesitated before answering, glancing in her direction with a cautious expression.
Just as she was about to turn and look, the ringtone stopped, and Zachary hung up.
"Who was that?" Winona asked.
The phone rang again, and this time, Winona saw the name on the screen: Hospital Nurse. Her first thought was Maeve.
Zachary frowned and answered the call. "What's up?"
"Mr. Bailey, that person contacted me. He said he's returning to the country the day after tomorrow."
"Are you sure he's returning the day after tomorrow and not already back?" Zachary's voice sounded normal, but from Winona's perspective, his expression was cold and impatient.
"Ms. Harrington, given your deception, our cooperation is over. I don't need you to provide information anymore."
Winona knew about Maeve's situation, so Zachary didn't hide it from her.
Hearing him say the cooperation was over, the person on the other end panicked. "I didn't lie to you. He really said he's returning the day after tomorrow!"
"If it's not deception, then it proves you're truly incompetent, being played without realizing it. If you can't even ensure the basic accuracy of your information, there's no need for cooperation."
"Don't you want to find him? I can help you. I promise I won't let you down this time. But my friend's engagement party is coming up, and I'd like you to accompany me."
"Ms. Harrington, do you think you're that important? Do you think you can manipulate me with your words, or that I'll rely on you because of them? Based on the information you've provided so far, you have no right to make demands."
Zachary hung up and immediately blocked her number.
Winona watched him. "Hospital Nurse? That's quite a charming way to save a contact."
If he didn't know the name, it would be understandable. But he kept calling her by a respectful title and saved her contact as "Hospital Nurse," which seemed off, as if he did it on purpose for her to see.
Zachary didn't explain. He opened his contacts and showed her Dylan's name: [Assistant Dylan.]
Then he opened a few more, all with job titles and names. For those he wasn't familiar with and didn't have duplicate professions, they were saved like Maeve's, with just the job title.
"Charming, huh?" Zachary asked indifferently.
Winona fell silent.
She quietly called Sarah.
Lydia had been in and out of the hospital over the years, and Sarah was very experienced.
As soon as she heard about the hospitalization, she packed everything without needing Winona to tell her what to bring.
After dropping Winona off at the old house, Zachary instructed, "Have the driver bring the things over later. Dad is with Mom, so you won't be much help there."
He seemed very busy and left quickly after giving these instructions.
