Chapter 621 Turn It into a Thorn
Winona put down her fork. "Why do you think I'm upset? Did you do something you shouldn't have and now you're feeling guilty?"
Before she even finished speaking, Zachary quickly interjected, worried she'd get the wrong idea. "No, I didn't."
"Alright then," Winona replied.
After that, neither of them spoke. It was only a few seconds of silence, but it felt like an eternity.
"Winona," Zachary broke the silence, his voice tinged with anxiety. "I..."
If he had to explain the photo, he'd have to reveal Maeve's identity, and then he couldn't hide his health issues anymore.
"I haven't done anything to betray you," Zachary said seriously, his voice low and earnest, hoping to convince Winona. "After your competition, I'll come to Rosewood City to pick you up."
He planned to explain everything to her then. If his health hadn't improved in a month, she deserved to know and decide if she still wanted to marry him. If he got better, there would be no need to hide anything.
Winona valued this competition a lot, and he didn't want to distract her now.
"Okay," Winona agreed.
Zachary asked a few more questions, subtly probing if she had seen the photo of him in the café. Once he was sure she hadn't, he finally relaxed.
But the photo issue was still troubling...
As soon as Winona hung up with Zachary, Rebecca's video call came through. "Winona."
Rebecca was conflicted, unsure if she should bring up Zachary's scandal. She didn't want to upset Winona if she didn't know, but she also didn't want to cause a misunderstanding if it was nothing.
"Did you talk to Zachary today?" Rebecca asked cautiously, watching Winona's face closely for any reaction.
Winona smiled. "Are you calling to comfort me? You look so serious, I thought you were about to defuse a bomb."
Rebecca ignored the joke. "Did you see the news?"
Winona's smile faded, her expression turning cold. "I saw it, but someone sent it to me on purpose."
She explained about the photo sent from an unknown number. "I'll send you the number later. Can you look into it for me?"
"Sure," Rebecca agreed, her frustration evident. "What's Zachary's deal? Letting some woman massage him in a café? He's engaged! Doesn't he know how to avoid suspicion? Can he have some decency?"
Winona was silent for a few seconds. "He probably wasn't feeling well."
"If he wasn't feeling well, why not go to a massage parlor? Why in a café? And he's about to get married. Even if he goes to a massage parlor, he should choose a male therapist. Giving his fiancée peace of mind is the least he can do. I seriously doubt he got to be the CEO of the Bailey Group on merit alone."
Rebecca's frown deepened. "I need to teach him a lesson for your future happiness."
That is, if this was a misunderstanding. If he was thinking of having a mistress, she'd shake some sense into him.
Winona listened to Rebecca's rant while looking at the photo, her mind drifting to the time Zachary had knocked over a bowl in the kitchen.
Rebecca noticed Winona staring at the screen silently and assumed she was upset. If this had happened with Anthony, she'd have torn him apart. She slapped her forehead, muttering, "Get a grip."
Why was she thinking about him now?
She refocused. "Did you ask Zachary about the woman?"
"No," Winona replied.
Rebecca was exasperated. "Are you two dating or playing a guessing game? If there's a misunderstanding, clear it up. Don't let it fester."
Winona laughed at the apt description. "Can you find out what that woman's job is?"
Rebecca, drawing on her years of reading novels, imagined a dramatic confrontation. "Sure, but remember, the man is always more at fault."
"Zachary isn't that stupid," Winona said firmly. "If he didn't want to break up, he wouldn't flirt in public. He must be dealing with something he doesn't want to worry me about, especially with my competition coming up. If he won't tell me, I'll find out myself. That woman is the key."
Rebecca scratched her head. "Watching you two date gives me a headache. I'll look into it and call you."
She hoped Zachary was a good guy and wouldn't hurt her friend again.
...
That evening, Matthew met Zachary at Night Club for drinks. They didn't bother with a private room.
Zachary sat on a barstool and ordered a brandy.
Both men were strikingly handsome and well-dressed, drawing attention as soon as they sat down. They were used to it and continued drinking calmly.
Matthew frowned at Zachary, who had downed several drinks. "What's going on with you?"
He knew Maeve was a doctor, so he hadn't thought the photo was anything scandalous.
Zachary rubbed his temples, his head down. "I had a headache. I ran into her, and she helped with some therapy."
"A headache, a chance meeting, a convenient therapy session, and someone just happened to take a photo? And not a journalist, but a social media influencer with millions of followers? That's quite a coincidence," Matthew said, raising an eyebrow.
