Chapter 374 Having a Baby
Evander tried to shut down Lydia's wild idea, "Isn't that a bit over the top?"
Honestly, if he found himself in that situation, he wouldn't be shocked, just super awkward.
He thought to himself, 'That's all I can do to help you.'
"You don't get it, young folks love to flaunt. Winona and Zachary are total lookers, way better than those internet celebs on TV all the time. Winona deserves the same spotlight."
Evander said, "Anything that belongs to you seems better, right?"
Lydia, all proud, "Of course, Zachary's better looking than others, thanks to my awesome genes."
Evander was speechless for a sec.
"But he didn't appreciate Winona, so she left him. Now he's trying to get back together with her." After that, she looked at Evander, "Why haven't you made the call yet?"
Evander pulled out his phone to call the housekeeper, and even then, he asked, "Aren't they getting along now? Isn't it better for two people to get along than a whole crowd?"
"Why is your emotional intelligence so low?" Lydia said with a sneer. "It's getting dark soon. After shopping and grabbing a bite, the day's over. How many hours is that? If you bring them back home, they can crash for the night, giving them more time to bond. And with elders around, they won't just storm off, making it easier to sort things out."
If they had argued and couldn't leave, they couldn't just sit there doing nothing, so they ended up having a heart-to-heart talk.
She thought Winona was still living in Matthew's apartment, so she was scheming to keep her there.
Evander, feeling a bit insecure, said, "What makes you think my emotional intelligence is low?"
"Other guys woo women with flowers, bags, and bling. You chased me with a dog, for three whole blocks, until I broke my leg and was stuck in bed for over a month. You had the nerve to visit me, and even then, you took care of me to apologize for your dumb dog," Lydia's tone got sharper. "Now you say your emotional intelligence isn't low, so you did it on purpose? Did you make me break my leg just to see me humiliate myself?"
Evander, feeling guilty, thought any excuse would sound lame, "No."
"Dad, Mom," Zachary's voice came from not far behind them, "what are you doing here?"
Evander and Lydia went silent.
They slowly turned their heads towards the voice. Was there anything more embarrassing than getting caught eavesdropping?
Lydia played it cool and strolled over to link arms with Winona, "We're just out shopping. Your dad's got a buddy's birthday coming up next month, so we're hunting for a gift. What a coincidence, you shopping too? Perfect timing, Sarah whipped up a bunch of new dishes tonight. Come home with me and give 'em a try."
Zachary quickly shot it down, "No need, Mom. We're planning to eat out later."
No need to fake being hurt, tonight he could sneak into Winona's room without any pretense.
He'd bought so many condoms, if he didn't use them soon, they'd go bad.
Lydia turned back and shot him a look, "Did I ask you? I'm talking to Winona. We haven't seen each other in ages. What's wrong with having a meal at home?"
Zachary totally missed her good intentions.
Winona did miss Lydia, and it was a good chance to check on Sarah's health. Her heart condition was like a ticking time bomb. "Okay."
Zachary went quiet.
First Matthew, then Frank, and now even his mom was competing for his wife?
The two women walked ahead, chatting and moving fast, leaving the two guys trailing behind, one sulking, the other relieved.
Zachary glanced at Evander, "Dad, can't you take Mom on a romantic getaway? Didn't you say you wanted to travel?"
"Isn't it nice for the family to have a meal together? I'm getting old, I just want you around. What's so great about traveling? I traveled all over for work in the first half of my life." Evander didn't dare tick off Lydia now. He didn't expect her to remember those old stories from so many years ago, let alone bring them up.
Zachary started throwing random jabs, "Are you kidding?"
"Of course not. So why don't you hurry up and have a kid? When I was thirty, you were already several years old."
Back at the Bailey Mansion, Sarah was still cooking up two more dishes. Lydia went to her room to change clothes; she liked to wear loose and comfy loungewear at home. Evander followed her upstairs, leaving Winona and Zachary alone in the living room.
Zachary lowered his voice, "We'll leave right after dinner."
Winona shot him a look, moved aside, and put some space between them, "You've got too many dirty thoughts in your head. If you don't clear them out, you'll turn into an idiot."
Zachary went silent.
Lydia came downstairs and immediately noticed the tension between them, like they'd had a fight. She raised an eyebrow at Evander, was like, 'See, I told you so.'
She came downstairs and casually grabbed a package from the cabinet to the living room. "I bought some local goodies online yesterday. Didn't expect them to arrive so fast. Winona, take some home with you. If you like them, I'll get more."
Winona said, "Food usually arrives the next day."
Lydia opened the package, and her smile froze. She looked at the wriggling thing inside and screamed in fright.
The next second, a black shadow leaped out, lunging at her.
Zachary was right next to her. Hearing her scream, he instinctively glanced into the package. When the thing jumped out, he quickly grabbed it.
It was a snake.
