Chapter 675 A Murder Occurred
Evander shut the door and left in a hurry, like he couldn't get away fast enough.
Winona tried to pull her hand away, but Zachary held on tight. She sighed, "I'm not going anywhere. Let go. I'm exhausted and need to sleep."
She hadn't slept a wink since waking up last night. Her emotions had been on edge the entire time. She was worn out by the time she knew Zachary was okay, but with people constantly in the hospital room, she had forced herself to stay awake.
Now that things had finally quieted down and she had all the information she needed, her exhaustion hit her like a ton of bricks. She yawned several times in quick succession, her eyes watering from the effort, making her look pitiful.
Zachary's heart softened, and he quickly let her go. As Winona turned to head for the empty bed next to them, he remembered that Matthew had just slept there. The bed still probably smelled like him.
The thought of her lying in the same bed, under the same blanket, and on the same pillow made Zachary pull her back. "You sleep in this bed."
Winona was baffled. She hadn't considered any of that and replied offhandedly, "It's a hospital bed. What's the difference? Does the one you slept in smell better or something?"
Zachary simply said, "Yes."
Winona gave him a thumbs up.
She closed her eyes and fell asleep almost immediately. The bed was filled with Zachary's scent, and the residual warmth made it feel like she was being held in his arms. A sense of indescribable peace enveloped her.
It was only then that she realized why Zachary had insisted she sleep in this bed.
What a jealous man.
Winona was genuinely exhausted. As soon as she figured it out, she fell into a deep sleep, undisturbed by the noise outside.
Seeing her asleep, the tenderness in Zachary's eyes turned to ice. He got out of bed, changed clothes with some difficulty, and before leaving, he walked over to Winona, bent down, and held her hand.
Her arm was resting on the blanket, and the bruise on her elbow was particularly noticeable.
It was from when she had been kicked and fell to the ground, hitting her elbow.
Zachary gently brushed his thumb over the bruise, then tucked her hand under the blanket and left.
Outside the room, he coldly instructed the two bodyguards standing at attention, "Protect Mrs. Bailey. No one goes in until I get back, not even hospital staff."
Downstairs, Richard was waiting by the car. Seeing Zachary, he quickly opened the door. "Mr. Bailey, are you sure it's okay for you to leave the hospital in your condition?"
Zachary replied, "I'm fine."
They had only 24 hours. If they couldn't find any dirt on Alton, this whole setup would be for nothing, and the injuries he and Winona suffered would be in vain.
"Take me to the police station where Alton is being held."
He closed his eyes as soon as he got in the car and didn't open them until they arrived at the station.
Normally, he wouldn't be able to see anyone at this stage, but Zachary not only got in without any issues, he also got a private meeting with Alton.
Alton was dressed casually, but the wrinkles on his face showed he had been living well abroad. Though in his fifties, he looked barely over forty, exuding an air of mature elegance.
"Let's cut to the chase. What do you want?" Zachary handed him a cigarette and lit one for himself. "Don't worry, it's just us here. No cameras, no bugs. Whatever you say stays between us."
Before seeing him, Zachary had thought Alton might want his shares in the Bailey Group back. But after seeing him and receiving Alton's medical report from Richard, he dismissed the idea.
Terminal cancer.
He had kidnapped Zachary and Winona without demanding ransom, indicating he either didn't need money or didn't plan to treat his illness. So getting the shares back was pointless.
Besides, those shares had been used to offset the huge sum he had embezzled. They were no longer his.
"I just came back to visit family and pick a good burial site for myself. But you, you slapped such a big charge on me right after I returned. It really hurts my feelings," Alton said, looking around the room with disappointment.
No matter what Zachary said, even using Timothy's death to provoke him, Alton remained tight-lipped about his dirty deeds.
"Zachary, there's still 18 hours left. When I get out, let's have dinner with your parents. It's been twenty years. Not a day went by abroad that I didn't think of her."
Zachary stared at him coldly. "You won't get the chance."
He stood up.
Alton sighed meaningfully, "You've grown up, become quite capable. I underestimated you. But the only reason you're sitting here unharmed, and your mother and wife are safe, is because the kidnappers went easy on you. If they had been more ruthless, I'd be visiting your grave now."
He smiled, his expression full of provocation. "Zachary, do you think the kidnappers regret it now?"
Zachary's expression remained cold and indifferent. "If you had been more ruthless, the plan would have been different."
"Oh, by the way, I heard there was a murder at the Fields family's engagement party," Alton suddenly mentioned, then sighed. "As you get older, you tend to remember the past more vividly, especially the unpleasant things. I want everything that was taken from me returned, including the people I love."
"Keep dreaming," Zachary muttered as he left the detention center, his brow furrowed. He asked Richard, "Was there a murder at the Fields family's engagement party yesterday?"
He didn't believe Alton would bring it up without a reason.
"I haven't heard anything," Richard replied. He had been too busy to pay attention to the Fields family. "If there was a murder, it must have been covered up. I'll look into it right away."
"Do it quickly," Zachary ordered.
It was a criminal case, so the cover-up only meant it hadn't made the news or spread publicly. But anyone who attended the party would have been questioned by the police.
It didn't take long for Richard to find out. When he got the report over the phone, his face changed instantly.
