Chapter 600 Not Really Wanting to Do It
Zachary hadn't seen Winona all day, and all he wanted was to hold her, kiss her, and forget about everything else, including shopping for clothes.
But Winona had already shoved her sketches in his face, with a look that said, "If you don't look at this, I'll tear you apart."
Zachary glanced down, giving the designs a quick once-over. Men's clothes all looked pretty similar to him, but since his wife designed these, they had to be the best. He nodded, "They look great. I'll have someone make them right away."
He reached out to hug Winona, "From now on, can you design all my clothes? My wife is amazing, not only can she restore artifacts, but she can design clothes too."
Unlike Zachary's good mood, Winona felt like scoffing. He couldn't even recognize his own clothes and still wanted her to design for him? He must be dreaming.
Winona pulled her hand back and looked at the clothes she had drawn. She had been drawing since she was a child and had graduated with an art degree, so her skills were top-notch. The clothes she had sketched looked exactly like the real thing.
"Do you like them? But I remember you already have one just like this. I looked for it in the closet today but couldn't find it. Did you put it somewhere else?"
Zachary finally took a closer look and remembered that he had worn that outfit when he saved Maeve. Her clothes had been torn, so he had given them to her and told her to throw them away afterward.
He replied succinctly, "It's gone."
There was a lot more to the story, but with Winona leaving for Aetheria next Monday and them not seeing each other for over a month, Zachary didn't want to waste any time on irrelevant people. He just wanted to be close to her.
Winona's tone was loaded with meaning, "It's such a nice outfit. It's a shame it's gone. Can you get it back?"
Zachary didn't catch her underlying message and felt a bit jealous. She had never shown this much concern for him. Was he now less important than a piece of clothing? "I can't get it back. If you like it, I'll have another one made."
He had no idea where Maeve had thrown it.
Winona gave him a forced smile and shoved the sketch into his arms. "Then go get it made now."
With that, she slipped out of his grasp like a fish.
Zachary instinctively caught the falling sketch and reached out to grab Winona, but he was a step too slow. His fingertips brushed against the soft skin on the back of her hand.
"Winona," he caught up to her in a few strides and held her hand, thinking she was mad because he had been too dismissive about the clothes, "I'll get it made right away, exactly like your drawing. I'll tell everyone my wife designed it."
Seeing his eager expression, Winona couldn't stay mad. She laughed despite herself, "And then I'll end up in jail for plagiarism."
Zachary fell silent.
With Winona leaving the country next Monday, even though it was only for a little over a month, he couldn't help but worry. He asked seriously, "Are you sure there's nothing you're hiding from me?"
That night, even though the kitchen lights were off, the living room lights were on. Even if he had misjudged for a moment, it shouldn't have spilled all over him, especially not on his chest.
Zachary answered firmly, afraid she would misunderstand if he hesitated, "No."
He was so wrapped up in his own health issues that he completely missed the point about the clothes.
Winona let out a cold laugh internally. The woman she saw at the second-hand store today looked familiar.
She didn't say anything more and didn't let go of Zachary's hand. He immediately followed her.
"Winona, the competition is only a week long. Can you come back a few times during the preparation period?"
He had seen the suitcase in the living room. The thought of her leaving for over twenty hours made him want to hide her away.
He had signed her up for this, but now that it was happening, he couldn't bear it. He didn't want her to leave for even a week.
He wondered if she would hit him if he changed his mind now.
This conflicting feeling was torturous.
Winona was still mad at him for lying, so her tone was a bit stiff, "I'm not sure."
It was a group activity, so they had to act together. She hadn't even left yet, so how could she know if there would be any breaks or how many?
The next day.
Zachary had planned to stay home and cuddle with Winona all day, but he was woken up before eight.
"I'm not going to work today. Let's sleep a bit more," he said, reaching out to pull Winona into his arms.
But before he could touch her, a pillow hit him square in the face.
"I told you I had things to do today, but you insisted on staying up so late," Winona's voice was hoarse. "Get up, we're going to the hospital."
Zachary was still a bit groggy, but the word "hospital" snapped him awake.
He pulled the pillow off his face and stared at Winona with concern, "What's wrong? Are you feeling unwell?"
Winona glared at him, "Everything hurts."
Her whole body ached, talking was an effort, and her throat felt like it was on fire. This was after Zachary had given her two glasses of water before bed. Without them, she probably wouldn't be able to speak at all.
Hearing she was unwell, Zachary practically tumbled out of bed. When they got to the hospital, he found out the "patient" was him.
"Doctor, please give him a full-body check-up," Winona said.
Hearing "full-body check-up," Zachary's heart skipped a beat. His first thought was that she had found out, "Winona, there's nothing wrong with me."
"I didn't say there was. It's just a check-up. I asked Dylan, and you haven't had one this year. Since we have time today, let's do it."
Most of the results would be available today. Winona wouldn't feel at ease until she was sure he was okay.
Zachary tried to change her mind, "You're leaving for Aetheria tomorrow. I want to spend today with you, not waste time on something unnecessary. I'll come back the day after tomorrow and send you the results, okay?"
Winona smiled, leaving no room for negotiation, "I'll be with you during the check-up, so it's like a date, just a bit unconventional."
Zachary fell silent.
Unconventional was an understatement. He had never heard of a couple going to the hospital for a check-up as a date.
The doctor finished writing the order and smiled, "You're lucky to have such a caring girlfriend."
Zachary felt guilty as he glanced at the list of tests while paying.
Winona's voice sounded in his ear, "You don't seem too eager to do this, do you?"
