Chapter 531 Buy You for an Hour

Anthony was still hanging around, waiting for Rebecca to give him an answer. The office was so quiet, it felt like even the clock had stopped ticking, making the silence even more awkward.

Rebecca was getting more and more nervous. "I need to think about it," she finally said.

This was a huge decision. Sure, she could break up if things went south, but what if Anthony turned out to be one of those clingy, obsessive guys? Judging by his recent behavior, she seriously thought he might be.

Suddenly, Anthony's alarm went off, reminding him he had a meeting to get to.

"Take your time. Let me know when you've made up your mind," he said as he headed for the door.

Rebecca called out, "Would you accept a no?"

Anthony replied, "No."

Rebecca rolled her eyes in frustration. What was the point of asking, then? She'd either have to agree willingly or be pressured into it until she gave in out of sheer annoyance.

After the meeting, Rebecca handed Anthony the organized meeting notes.

Anthony was swamped with other tasks and tossed them aside without even looking.

"Come on, take a look," Rebecca urged excitedly. It was her first time doing this, and she was eager for feedback. "How did I do? Is there anything I need to improve?" she asked.

Though she wasn't the top student, she had the heart of one. If she was going to do something, she wanted to do it well. Otherwise, all her effort would go unrecognized, and that would be such a waste.

Anthony couldn't focus on his documents with her bright eyes staring at him, so he picked up the notes and skimmed through them. "Pretty good," he said.

He glanced at only a few lines but did so earnestly. Rebecca was satisfied and cupped her face with her hands. She said, "I really am a smart, beautiful, positive, and always improving good girl."

She was the most self-absorbed person Anthony'd ever met.

"Anthony, can I ask you something?" Rebecca leaned over the desk, meeting his eyes. "Is it true that mentally ill people aren't held accountable for murder?"

Anthony set his things down and leaned back in his chair, about to speak when Rebecca pulled out her wallet and handed him a stack of cash. She continued, "I asked your assistant. This should cover an hour of your time."

She opted for cash because she was worried that Anthony might not accept a transfer and could take the chance to make some odd demands.

Anthony replied, "It depends. If a mentally ill person kills someone while unable to recognize or control their actions..."

Satisfied with the answer, Rebecca quickly left the law firm. Howard had recovered after taking his medication and had gone back to school since he had classes that evening.

Rebecca had plans with Winona to grab food at the college's food street behind Dreamopolis.

The food street was just as it had been, unchanged and bustling with people during dinner time. Rebecca held a skewer in one hand and a sandwich in the other, looking content. She said, "I haven't been here since graduation. I've missed these foods so much."

Winona, who had stayed up late last night and spent the day resting at home, wasn't very hungry. She nibbled on the skewer Rebecca held. "Yep, you're eating the food you've missed so much."

After some playful banter, Rebecca got serious and said, "Timothy is sick."Winona replied, "Yeah, he's a total creep."

"He has delusions, OCD, sadistic tendencies, mild mania, and emotional disorders," Rebecca said. "In short, he's a complete lunatic. I asked Anthony today, and he said that mentally ill people aren't held accountable for murder if they can't control their actions.

There was a news story about a delusional manic patient who killed a neighbor's family. He was just sent to a mental hospital and is still alive and kicking. That guy only had two conditions and was already dangerous. Timothy is like a walking bomb."

Winona frowned. Timothy seemed convinced that Zachary was Nicholas. If Zachary's fake identity was exposed and angered Timothy, it could be very dangerous.

Winona asked, "How do you know all this?"

She had asked Anthony to investigate, but he only found background information. Timothy's medical records must be well-hidden.

Rebecca remarked, "You asked Anthony to investigate, so I had some friends look into it too. One of them has a mental illness and goes to the same clinic as Timothy. He saw Timothy there and hid in the bathroom until midnight. When everyone left, he sneaked into the doctor's computer and checked the medical records, then got detained for seven days.

Luckily, he's smart. He downloaded a game on the doctor's computer and played all night. They thought he was just a gaming addict. He's young, ignorant of the law, and not very educated. The police felt sorry for him and only detained him."

Winona fell silent.

She owed him a big favor. She said, "Who's this hero? Once this is over, I'll host a dinner and have Zachary thank him properly."

Rebecca replied, "I've already thanked him. You don't need to worry."

Hearing this, Winona had a bad feeling. "How did you thank him?" she asked.

"I bought him a high-end computer, turning him into a real gaming addict. His parents are grateful," Rebecca said, clutching her chest in mock pain. "I wouldn't even buy Howard a computer with those specs."

Winona said, "Are you sure they thanked you but didn't want to kill you with a broom?" She sometimes doubted Rebecca's understanding of emotions.

"Have you heard the saying? Rich kids who don't start businesses can stay rich for generations. If they do, 70% will lose everything. Unfortunately, my friend is in that 70%. The money he spends on gaming gear is nothing compared to his investment losses," Rebecca said, chewing on her skewer. "I'm preserving their wealth for future generations. How could they not thank me?"

Winona fell silent.

Winona was worried about Zachary and wanted to call him but feared it might expose him.

Though she wasn't at the Bailey Group lately, Dylan kept her updated. The company had laid off several people, including some close to Otis, who had kidnapped Winona at Evander's office. Timothy's days seemed numbered, but Winona feared he might act out of desperation.

At that time, Rebecca said uneasily, "Zachary might know, but remind him to be careful of Timothy. Don't think he's invincible."

Winona paused for a few seconds before smiling. "You never liked him, did you?" she asked.

Rebecca replied proudly, "Yeah, but you can't live without him. If he dies, it's fine, but you'll be heartbroken."
