Chapter 14 Lydia Gets Sick
Winona didn't expect Zachary to suddenly agree to a divorce.
But it was exactly what she had wanted, wasn't it?
She smiled triumphantly. "Thank you, Mr. Bailey."
Then she turned around and left this ominous place.
That night, when Winona returned home, she put all the necessary documents for the next morning in her bag. However, when she saw the photo on their marriage certificate, she couldn't help but stare blankly.
It was the only photo they had taken together in their three-year marriage.
She stared at the emotionless man in the picture, feeling a gradually bitter and painful sensation in her heart. Fortunately, it was finally coming to an end, this exhausting marriage.
She would no longer have to sit alone in the empty living room every night, staring at the clock on the wall, wondering if her husband would come back at night. Nor would her heart accelerate because of his accidental touch, only to find out it was all her imagination.
Winona looked at the photo one last time.
Without a care, she put her marriage certificate into her bag.
The next day, she woke up early, having suffered from insomnia all night, in a state of half-sleep, half-awake.
Standing in front of the washbasin at this moment, she looked at herself in the mirror. Her face was pale and haggard, with obvious dark circles under her eyelids.
To make herself look more energetic, Winona put on a slightly heavy makeup.
Afraid of traffic jams, she left early and ended up with smooth sailing all the way. She even arrived at the Civil Affairs Bureau without waiting for any traffic lights, as if God considered their divorce the correct choice, enabling her to reach her destination smoothly during the morning rush hour.
Now in mid-summer, the sun at 8 o'clock in the morning was scorching. Winona found a shady spot and stood there waiting.
During this time, she received a WhatsApp message from Rebecca, "Winona, do you want me to accompany you?"
She raised her lips and replied, "No need, divorce is not a fight. I can handle it on my own."
As soon as she sent the message, she received a phone call from the Bailey family's Crest Manor.
The only person who would call her from this number is Sarah, and it must be about Lydia.
She frowned and was hesitant to answer. The divorce was so close and she didn't want any more unexpected events.
In the moment of hesitation, the call was automatically cut off. Winona breathed a sigh of relief, but Sarah called again immediately.
Winona frowned, wondering why she called twice. Could it be something important?
Her heart inexplicably panicked, but she couldn't think too much. She answered the call, "Sarah, what's the matter..."
"Madam, madam, suddenly fainted while eating! Please come to the hospital quickly, the doctor said it requires a family member's signature!" Sarah on the other end of the phone was almost in tears with anxiety.
Winona's face tightened, and she hurriedly ran to the roadside to take a taxi, responding, "Okay, don't worry, I'll come right away!"
Half an hour later, the car stopped at the entrance of the hospital, and Winona rushed to the emergency room, familiar with the way.
Upon seeing her, Sarah hurriedly came forward, still holding Lydia's shawl in her hand.
"Madam fell asleep in the bathtub while taking a bath last night. She probably caught a cold and suddenly developed a fever."
Ever since giving birth to Zachary, Lydia's body had been particularly weak. Even a slight breeze could make her fall ill, catching everyone off guard.
Even if it's just a fever, it would make her suffer under the watch of the Grim Reaper.
Winona held her breath, wiped the sweat from her face, and asked again, "Did you call Zachary yet?"
Sarah said she hadn't.
Winona wasn't surprised either. Zachary was usually busy with work. Sarah was used to contacting her directly when there was something.
But they were about to get divorced, and many things would have to be handled by Zachary as soon as possible in the future.
"Sarah, call Zachary now..."
Before she could finish her sentence, the emergency room's door of the room was pushed open, and the doctor came out from inside. "Are you Lydia's family?"
Winona hurriedly approached, "I am, doctor. How is my mom?" The doctor glanced at her, "The patient is temporarily stable and has been saved, but she is still unconscious... However, I suggest that you should have a detailed full-body examination for the patient."
Upon hearing this, Winona's heart skipped a beat, and she subconsciously turned her head to look at Sarah next to her, while Sarah turned and went into the emergency room. Winona asked again, "Doctor, is there something wrong with my mom's health?"
"We cannot confirm until we get the results. Get the examination done as soon as possible." After the doctor finished speaking, he left, but Winona still sensed that something was wrong.
Later, Lydia was transferred to a regular ward, and Winona stayed by her side while Sarah went back to cook soup. Looking at the weak woman on the hospital bed, Winona tidied her messy hair. In her eyes, Lydia was her mother, regardless of her future relationship with Zachary. She would visit the elderly frequently.
Lost in thoughts, Lydia woke up. Due to her usually low blood pressure, she often felt dizzy. Waking up in the hospital had become routine for her. "Winona... I'm troubling you again this time."
"Mom, it's not a trouble. How are you feeling right now? I'll call the doctor to check." Lydia grabbed her hand and shook her head, "Just my old condition, I'll be fine in a couple of days."
Her gaze fell upon Winona's made-up face, and she smiled, "Winona, you look beautiful today. You should always wear makeup like this, beautiful. Are you going on a date with Zachary?" Winona rarely wore such exquisite makeup, but she had a naturally beautiful complexion, which made it impossible to look away from her at this moment.
She didn't mention that she had an appointment with Zachary to discuss divorce today, fearing it would upset Lydia, so she remained silent. Lydia took her silence as agreement and was extremely delighted, "I'm fine now. You and Zachary can go have fun. Sarah will be here soon, and she can take care of me."
Winona held her hand, "Mom, since we're already in the hospital, let's have a full-body examination to put both me and Zachary at ease." Upon hearing about the examination, Lydia instinctively shook her head, showing some resistance to the idea. But before she could say anything, Winona's phone rang. Looking at the screen, it was Zachary calling. Winona picked up the call and was about to speak when she heard a man's voice filled with restrained anger, "Winona, are you playing me?"
