Chapter 340 You Lied to Me
"Stay here?" Zachary's brow twitched, his face darkening. He glanced past Eva at the bodyguard. "Where's Winona?"
"Mrs. Bailey went to her room after lunch."
Zachary slipped on his slippers and headed for the stairs. "Did Winona let you in?"
Regal Oaks had rules; bodyguards weren't allowed in the main house without orders.
"Mrs. Bailey asked me, Dr. Stewart, and Quinn to look after Miss Turner."
Quinn was the new servant.
Eva's face twisted. "Look after" was just a nice way of saying "watch." She wanted to sneak upstairs to find some of Winona's hair, a comb, or nails, but she couldn't even get to the second floor. Six eyes were always on her.
Just as Zachary reached the stairs, Winona came out of her room. She gestured towards Eva. "Your little fangirl, I've entertained her all day. Now it's your turn."
Zachary chuckled. "I thought Regal Oaks was getting a name change."
Winona asked, "To what?"
Zachary gritted his teeth. "Regal Oaks Recycling Center."
Yesterday she picked up an Austin, today an Eva.
Zachary thought of his stash of condoms—who knew if they'd be used before they expired. He looked at Winona with eyes full of grievance.
Unable to vent his anger on Winona, he turned to Eva. He glanced at the bodyguard and then at Eva's aggrieved face.
But Zachary had no pity. He looked away and told the bodyguard, "Please escort Miss Turner out."
"Why?" Eva, agitated, tried to stand, forgetting her broken leg. She screamed in pain and fell back into the wheelchair. "Winona, didn't we agree? I tell you what I know, and you let me stay."
Winona's eyes were cold and mocking. "Miss Turner, didn't you check whose territory this is? Zachary and I are ex-spouses; I can't make decisions for Regal Oaks."
Eva said, "So, you lied to me? You never intended to let me stay?"
"How is that lying?" Winona sat at the dining table. "You stayed here for a day, took a nap. Dinner's ready, so stay for that. Don't say I'm not considerate."
Eva looked at her, feeling even more furious inside, but she didn't show it. She smiled. "Good thing I didn't tell you everything. Since Xavier went to prison, that mother and son have been getting a lot of money from offshore accounts. Do you think Xavier or that woman has rich relatives?"
Winona fell silent.
Seeing her silence, Eva lifted her chin proudly. "I also found out something else. Recently, someone contacted that woman, asking 'Do you know what to do?' The IP address was from someone in the Turner family."
Winona smiled. "You really don't care about your family's reputation, do you?"
For a guy, she was willing to betray her family. The Turner family didn't have many daughters, so Eva was spoiled from a young age. Raised with a silver spoon, she grew up pampered and arrogant.
She glanced at Zachary beside her. He still looked stern and displeased. But even with that serious face, he could still grace magazine covers.
She sneered, "You really attract women. Maybe you should wear a mask to avoid attracting flies."
Zachary looked up. "Are you sure I should wear it? The one in the room was brought back by me? And I think Miss Turner is here for you too. What kind of woman chases a man who's living with his girlfriend and still comes to his house? Is unrequited love not painful enough, or does she think she can handle rejection?"
Eva looked at Zachary.
He was peeling shrimp, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, showing off strong, well-proportioned arms. He wore a simple, elegant mechanical watch, the metal band catching the light as he moved.
His long fingers were dirty with shrimp juice, but he didn't mind, focusing intently on peeling the shrimp.
When talking about himself, his expression was casual, as if those irrelevant people were less important than the shrimp in his hand.
He placed the peeled shrimp in Winona's bowl.
Eva was stunned. When her father told her about Zachary, she watched many of his interviews. She never imagined that the dignified, elegant, and unattainable Zachary in front of the camera would be so considerate in private, especially in front of Winona, even personally peeling shrimp for her.
And Winona ate without any hesitation, as if Zachary peeling shrimp for her was the most normal thing.
Eva initially just wanted to marry him. With love or not, in a wealthy marriage, matching social status was most important. Feelings were secondary. After marriage, they could each live their own life. But now, she was determined to have this man.
She felt that in her future life, she wouldn't meet a man as good as him.
Having seen the best, how could she tolerate men like those in the Turner family, who spent their days surrounded by women?
However, Frank was an exception. Not only did he avoid women, but even his dogs were male.
Eva said gently, "Winona, how can you let Mr. Bailey peel shrimp for you? He's been working hard all day and still has to take care of you when he gets home."
No matter what kind of woman a man liked, if given a choice, most would marry a gentle, virtuous woman suitable for being a wife.
A woman like Winona, no matter how beautiful, was only fit to be a lover.
Winona's chewing slowed. She turned to Zachary. "Your little fangirl is feeling sorry for you."
Zachary wiped his hands with a wet towel and continued peeling shrimp without looking up. "Miss Turner, I like peeling shrimp for my wife. If you have time to worry about other people's marriages, you should think more about your own affairs."
