Chapter 330 You Missed Me
Eva quickly looked away when she met the man's gaze, like one more glance would make her sick. "Do what I say or never show your face to me again."
She touched the plaster on her leg. The anesthesia hadn't worn off yet, so she wasn't in much pain.
A ruthless glint flashed in Eva's eyes as she gripped the bedsheet tightly. She had broken a leg and wanted payback.
The man pressed his lips together, eyes downcast, showing no emotion. "Do you really want to marry him that badly?"
"Yes, if I didn't, do you think I'd want to marry you? Now, get out of my ward, or I'll tell my dad what you've been up to."
"Is Eva nuts? You didn't hit her. If she's so tough, she should go after the driver who caused the accident. Why is she blackmailing you? Just because she pushed you, you have to serve her water, do her laundry, and take care of her in the hospital? Otherwise, you're ungrateful and heartless?"
Right then.
They were sitting in Rebecca's shop.
Winona rested her chin on one hand, lazily watching Rebecca rant. "You've been going on all morning. Aren't you tired?"
Rebecca snorted. "It's only been a morning. I still want to rush to the hospital and beat her up. She's shifting public opinion onto you on purpose."
This morning, a photo of Eva lying alone in a hospital bed had gone viral.
In the photo, she wore the dirty clothes from the accident, struggling to hold a disposable meal box, her head down as she ate.
The hospital's stark white lights shone on her bloodstained and dusty clothes, and with the cold-toned filter, it looked incredibly tragic.
The comment section was full of people scolding Winona for being ungrateful, even attaching videos of the accident and the moment Eva pushed her away to clarify for those who didn't understand.
[The world is going downhill. Never help others again. Just live your own life well. Otherwise, if you get hurt, it will only burden your family.]
[And she calls herself a cultural relic restorer, an artist. Such a lack of morals is truly shameful.]
Winona saw Rebecca's head down, her fingers flying across the screen, and asked curiously, "What are you doing?"
"I'm cursing these heartless bastards who make money by slandering others. They don't know shit. They just spout nonsense online all day and have never made any real contribution to society. They only know how to stand on the moral high ground and criticize others."
Winona was speechless and could only give her a thumbs up. "Did you resolve the issue with Howard?"
"Yeah, I took Anthony for a walk around that group, and they dropped the lawsuit," Rebecca said, getting angrier as she typed even faster. "Howard learned his lesson. Let's see if he dares to be so impulsive again."
Winona asked, "Aren't you afraid Mr. Lewis will hear about this?"
Taking a walk around.
It sounded like she was walking a dog.
Rebecca waved her hand grandly. "I don't care if he hears. I'm done with him."
Rebecca swallowed her pride and got involved in Howard's affairs, wasn't it just to have more friends and options when facing difficulties? But now that it proved useless, why should she endure it?
With Anthony's bad temper, she wanted to stay as far away from him as possible.
Rebecca paused her typing. "Hey, have you heard from Austin lately? I haven't seen him on any missions. Why can't I reach him?"
Winona frowned. "Can't reach him? What do you mean?"
"His phone's off," Rebecca said, noticing Winona didn't know either. She reassured her, "Maybe something came up. His job is special. He might just pop up in a few days."
Austin had disappeared for as long as six months before. Rebecca just thought of it and asked casually, not too worried.
And most importantly, the Robinson family hadn't made any moves.
If something had really happened, the Robinson family would have been in an uproar by now.
Winona thought the same.
But after parting with Rebecca, she still called Austin. It was only when Rebecca mentioned it that Winona realized it had indeed been a long time since Austin had contacted her.
"Sorry, the number you have dialed is currently unavailable."
Winona frowned, scrolling to the bottom of her contacts and dialing another number.
This was a number Austin had given her before, but he hadn't said what it was for. He just said if she missed him, she should call this number, and she would definitely find him.
He always spoke in that nonchalant manner, so she didn't know if he was serious.
As the call went through, Winona still doubted his words until she heard the familiar lazy, irreverent tone on the other end. She realized the call had indeed connected, and she had found him.
"Winona, you missed me."
Alright, it was really him, not an AI.
"Rebecca said she hasn't seen you in a long time and couldn't reach you. She was worried something happened to you."
Austin chuckled lightly, his voice sounding tired and weak, accompanied by a couple of low coughs. "Something did happen."
"What happened?"
Austin didn't say what had happened, only giving her an address and instructing, "Come alone."
The address he gave was an old residential building in the old part of town. It took her a while to find it along the alley.
At this time, the sun was still shining brightly in the sky, making the ground scorching hot.
The building faced west, and there wasn't a single person downstairs.
Cars couldn't get in, so Winona stood downstairs, looking up at the mottled white walls. "I'm downstairs. Seventh floor?"
"Yeah, the key is under the mat at the door."
The so-called seventh floor was actually the rooftop. The unscrupulous landlord had added a steel roof, turning it into a rental unit.
Winona climbed all the way up, panting so hard she couldn't straighten her back. She took a moment to catch her breath, retrieved the key from under the dusty mat, and opened the door.
The apartment was small, just a living room, a bedroom, and a bathroom.
As soon as Winona peeked in, she saw Austin lying on the bed. He happened to look over at her, a lazy, roguish smile curling his lips.
Seeing Austin, Winona's lingering doubts vanished. She frowned and quickly walked in. "What's wrong with you?"
If nothing was wrong, Austin wouldn't be lying there talking to her.
The room was quite messy, with takeout boxes and empty water bottles on the floor, which was unlike Austin's usual military habits.
No need for him to answer; Winona had already reached the bedside, her frown deepening. "What happened to you..."
