Chapter 131 The Shameless Woman

Steven's face twisted in disgust.

'This bitch is really disgusting,' he seethed internally. 'You’ve even started calling Henry "darling." Never heard you say that before.'

Steven glanced at Henry, clinging to life. Whether he would survive depended on Elinor now. If Henry weren't still breathing, Steven would have slapped Cara so hard she'd see stars.

But as long as Henry lived, Steven had to exercise restraint. After all, Henry had taken a bullet for him. He couldn't very well deal with Henry's lover and her troublesome child while he was still alive, could he?

So Steven maintained a stoic demeanor and remained silent.

Cara wept for what seemed an eternity. Seeing no reaction from Steven, she grew desperate.

Henry was her carefully chosen lifeline for the long haul. But with Henry at death’s door, she needed a new anchor for her and her daughter. If Henry died, she wouldn’t be terribly heartbroken. But using this chance to morally strong-arm Steven was definitely on her agenda.

So, Cara sniffled, turned, and fixed Steven with tear-filled eyes, pleading, "Steven, my husband’s going to be okay, right?"

Steven's face stayed impassive, but inside, he was cursing. "Don't worry; I'll do everything I can to save Henry! Elinor is a top-notch doctor; there's hope for treating Henry’s injuries."

His extradimensional space contained a myriad of supplies, including large containers filled with medical supplies and equipment found during a warehouse raid. He had only one resolve now: he would move heaven and earth to save Henry!

But success? That was in God's hands.

Cara sobbed, "If he dies, I don't want to live either!"

Steven kept his silence; he wasn’t about to dive into this conversation.

Seeing Steven's indifference, Cara internally fumed, 'You heartless bastard, Henry took a bullet for you, and you can't even protect us?'

She hated Steven with every fiber, but didn’t dare voice it. Still crying, she presented the tightly wrapped baby in her arms. "Steven, if Henry dies, I don't want to live either. But you two have a bond. Please, take care of the child for him. I’m begging you!"

Steven quickly said, "Mrs. Daniels, calm down. I will do my best to save Henry!"

Waving his hand, he refused to take the child. Cara persisted, "But what if you can’t save him?"

"Don't worry, I will do everything possible. And surely, you hope Henry pulls through, don't you?" Steven’s intense gaze bore into Cara’s eyes, punctuating each word.

Cara was struck silent by Steven’s question. Her eagerness to ascertain if Steven would take on the child should Henry perish made it seem like she was hoping for his demise.

"Of course, I... I certainly hope he will be fine!" Cornered by Steven’s resolve, Cara didn’t dare argue further and continued to sob, clutching the child.

Steven had Henry carried up to his doorstep on the 24th floor. The neighbors had to rotate twice to manage the effort.

Everyone was exhausted. Yet no one dared to utter a complaint. They all knew that if Steven was displeased, he wouldn’t hesitate to kill.

Steven ordered them to lay Henry down and commanded, "You can all leave now!"

Relieved, the neighbors quickly made their way back downstairs.

Cara, clutching her child, wept as she gazed at Henry. Steven frowned. "Mrs. Daniels, you should head back for now! We need to perform surgery to remove the bullet from Henry. You can’t help here."

Cara’s response was immediate and firm, "No! He needs someone by his side. I won't leave him!" She then knelt down and tightly gripped Henry’s hand, and Henry’s pained expression softened slightly.

Steven felt a surge of anger, the urge to shoot her right there tugging at his mind, but he restrained himself for Henry’s sake. Henry's condition was critical, so Steven didn’t delay further. He reached out and opened the door.

To Cara, the open door resembled the gates to paradise. The ice apocalypse had ravaged the world for a month, and she had endured a harrowing existence in the relentless cold. If it hadn’t been for Henry keeping her and her child warm every night, they would have perished.

Now, feeling the warmth from the room and seeing the familiar yet distant comforts of civilization, tears fell freely from her eyes—this time, they were genuine.

Without hesitation, Cara entered the room with her child. Spotting a water dispenser in the corner, she swallowed hard and quickly grabbed a cup to fill with hot water.

Steven called for Elinor to help move Henry, and they saw what Cara. Elinor’s eyes widened in surprise, bewildered that Steven allowed her to enter. But seeing Henry drenched in blood at the door, she understood.

Steven’s gaze darkened with disgust as he noticed Cara using his cup.

Oblivious, Cara had already filled the cup and was happily blowing on the hot water before taking a sip. "Hot water tastes so good!" She looked blissful.

Suddenly, she remembered the baby in her arms. "Steven, do you have any baby formula at home?" she asked, her voice hopeful.

Steven and Elinor were moving Henry when Cara’s question reached them. Steven’s face transformed into a mask of fury. "What did you say?" he demanded.

Cara, startled by Steven’s glare, recalled the gravity of the situation. Holding the cup, she said guiltily, "The baby needs to drink something too! My husband loves the baby very much."

Steven’s eyes were icy as he stared her down. "Come help us now! Or I'll kick you out!"

Cara, terrified, fell silent and followed them with her child.Steven's apartment had three bedrooms and a living room. Aside from his and Elinor's rooms, there was a third, usually unused, now reserved for power generators. Three of them together was enough to ensure their daily usage.
