Chapter 168 Fisherman

Steven brought some food for Emilia.

When she saw the food, her eyes lit up. After thanking Steven with the last bit of her restraint, she sat on the couch and devoured the food.

Steven waited until she finished eating before saying, "You understand everything now, right?"

Emilia nodded. "I know. You found me a home, right?"

A woman in her forties could see things more fairly.

Perhaps people of their age didn't value so-called love as much.

Marriage and daily life were about matching status.

As long as the conditions weremet, they could be together.

So, when Nora told Emilia that she could find her a long-term support, Emilia agreed without hesitation.

The only regret was—she originally thought that man was Steven!

Thanks to Nora's groundwork, Steven had been spared a great deal of trouble.

Before setting off, he emphasized the importance of secrecy regarding the safe house and shelter, his tone solemn as he impressed upon them the gravity of their mission!

They absolutely could not tell anyone outside in any way.

Otherwise, it could attract greedy people to come and seize it.

"If I find out that someone has leaked information about this place, then she won't need to live anymore." When Steven said this, his tone was calm and indifferent, but his eyes carried pure murderous intent.

The two women were terrified and quickly assured him that they wouldn't do anything stupid.

Steven nodded and didn't say anything more.

These two women were not young. Having worked in the entertainment industry, they weren't fools. They wouldn't do such stupid things.

He gave the warning just in case.

After giving the instructions, he asked Nora to go back to her room, and then he took Emilia to Sunshine Community.

The cold wind howled, and the icy wind, carrying snow, blew across the surface of the Mississippi River.

Compared to when the snowstorm first hit, the snowfall had now lessened significantly.

After all, in the extreme cold, there weren't as many water molecules in the air to condense into ice.

But the low temperatures persisted, and the cold wind was as biting as ever.

Across the river from Emerald Estate was a small town called Cox Town.

Separated by a river, one side was the villa area where the richest people in Starlight City lived, and the other side was a rural area on the outskirts of the city.

In the past, the people of Cox Town made a living by growing grains and vegetables.

Every household had greenhouses, growing grains and vegetables to sell in Starlight City.

Over the years, although they weren't as wealthy as the people in the city, they lived fairly well.

After the extreme cold storm hit, their lives were more comfortable than those in the city.

Although they also had to face the cold, they didn't lack food.

Moreover, their physical fitness was better than that of city dwellers.

When the snowstorm hit, they lived relatively comfortably, which was somewhat ironic.

Noon was the warmest time of the day.

The outside temperature rose to -160°F, and the wind and snow lessened a bit.

On the Mississippi River, a group of Cox Village residents, wrapped up tightly, appeared.

They came to the ice, carrying various tools.

They also brought five or six dogs, all Alaskan Malamutes and Huskies.

But in the low temperatures, the dogs were wrapped in cotton clothes.

The people of Cox Village cherished these dogs very much, treating them even better than themselves.

Because now in the South, only they could still be used as draft animals.

But at this moment, these sled dogs looked different from their usual silly appearance.

Their eyes were filled with fierce hostility, their mouths showing sharp teeth, and their fur stained with blood.

Led by a fifty-something black man, the group came to the ice.

He walked back and forth on the ice, sometimes lying down to look into the depths of the ice.

After a while, he tapped a spot with the stick in his hand.

"Here, start digging!" directed the man.

As soon as he spoke, the dozen or so people behind him immediately stepped forward, taking out large ice-breaking tools from the sled.

They set up the equipment in the designated spot and tied it to the dogs with ropes.

"Run. Run!" The dog handlers held the ropes tightly and shouted, and the dogs started running, pulling the ice-breaking tools to break the ice.

With the dogs' help, they broke the ice quickly, soon creating a large round hole in the ice.

"Got fish!" The leading blackman waved, and the dog handlers quickly held the dogs back.

The group lifted the ice-breaking tools, revealing a dozen or so fish frozen in the ice below.

After the river froze, the oxygen concentration in the water decreased, causing the fish to rise to the surface for oxygen.

Although they didn't find a breathing hole, they died near the ice surface.

The frozen lake presented an unexpected bounty for the fishermen of Cox Town. Breaking through the ice, they unearthed a treasure trove of frozen fish, providing a much-needed source of sustenance and becoming the primary source of protein for the entire town.

The group busied themselves as usual, led by Kyle Cox, the black man.

In the past, he was just a fisherman with an average status in Cox village.

But after the apocalypse, he became a key figure due to his fishing skills.

For example, now, when they went fishing, he only needed to designate the spot, while others did the physical work.

A dog handler, Stephen Cox, walked over to chat with Kyle. "Do you think the people in the city are all frozen to death in this cold?"

Kyle, with his hands in his pockets, scoffed at the question. "Those city folks don't even know how to grow crops. They rely on us farmers to feed them."

"Now, they probably can't even get a full meal. I bet most of them are already dead," he added.

Stephen nodded, saying gratefully, "Good thing we're country folks. No matter how bad the weather gets, we have food at home and the strength to work, so we won't starve!"

"But this weather is too cold. When will it end?" Stephen looked at the luxurious villa area across the river, his eyes showing a mix of smugness and uncertainty about the future.

They could survive, but this wasn't the life they wanted.

Kyle frowned slightly, squinting his eyes in the wind and snow. "Hard to say! But in this weather, we can survive. As long as we're willing to work, we won't starve!"

"Back when I was in Barrow, the temperature wasn't much higher than here. We used to swim without clothes back then!"

The group chatted idly.

In the past, they liked to gather and discuss international affairs, often talking about Asia and Europe and belittling other countries.

But now, without news sources, they had no interest in foreign affairs and could only talk about how miserable the city folks were.

Suddenly, the sound of an engine came from afar.

It came from across the river.

Although the sound wasn't loud, it was particularly noticeable in the silent, snowy world.

Stephen was puzzled. "Did I just hear a motorcycle?"

Kyle perked up his ears to listen carefully, then looked shocked.

No mistake!

The sound was just like the fishing boat he used to drive.

"How can there still be vehicles in this weather? Didn't the city folks all freeze to death?" someone asked.

The group stopped their work and looked toward the direction of the engine sound.
