Chapter 265 Formidable Enemy
After getting Earl's promise, Julia was over the moon. She thanked him and headed back.
Earl watched Julia walk away, clenched his fist, and muttered, "I gotta protect our family!"
He gathered his courage and went to find Gavin.
Gavin was busy organizing folks to take care of the soldiers from the West Mountain Base rescue team. He set up places for them to stay and had everyone pitch in with food to make meals.
He wasn't just pushing around his own villagers but also folks from five or six other villages in Cox Town.
Surprisingly, the chiefs of those other villages, wanting to show their loyalty to the West Mountain Base, upped their contributions of food and supplies.
By the time Earl got there, Gavin's place was stacked high with supplies.
Gavin stood proudly in the snow at his doorstep.
Earl took a few deep breaths to steady himself.
He walked up to Gavin and shouted, "Mr. Gavin Cox!"
Gavin's face changed a bit when he saw Earl.
"What are you doing here?" he snapped, frowning.
Earl was their secret weapon in Cox Village, and Gavin didn't want the West Mountain Base folks to know about him just yet.
Gavin was worried they'd take Earl away. He couldn't afford to lose Earl. His talents were invaluable to Cox Village, and if they took him away, they'd be left without their ace in the hole.
"Come with me!" Gavin dragged Earl to a secluded spot and said sternly, "The fact that you're a Psychic is a secret of our Cox Village. We can't let others know! From now on, don't go out without my orders."
Earl, however, grinned and said, "Mr. Gavin Cox, do you really think you can keep this under wraps? You've dragged all of Cox Town into a mess. Even if you keep your mouth shut, people from other villages will spread the word."
"The fact that I'm a Psychic will come out sooner or later, so why not just admit it openly?" Earl shot back.
Gavin kept a stern face and, after a moment of silence, stared at him and said, "Earl, do you think you have a backer now and can do whatever you want?"
Earl didn't say anything, just stared back.
Gavin, feeling cornered, continued, "It's fine if you want to cozy up to the powerful, but don't forget, you're part of the Cox family!"
Earl said, "Mr. Gavin Cox, I didn't think that far. I just want to help you out. At least let me into the core circle of our family, right?"
"You didn't even tell me about meeting with the leaders of the higher organization? It feels like you're keeping me in the dark, like I'm not even part of this. It hurts!"
When Earl first started bargaining with Gavin, he was pretty scared inside.
After all, the long-standing respect for family elders made this homebody lack the guts to talk back.
But once he did, he realized it wasn't as tough as he thought.
The key was that he saw Gavin was really scared and hesitated!
This boosted his confidence big time.
'Family elders? What a joke! They all bow and scrape in front of the soldiers from West Mountain Base. I'm at least a Psychic, not worse than those elders,' he thought.
Seeing Gavin's hesitant expression, Earl stepped forward and said, "Even if you want to keep me hidden, the folks from West Mountain Base will eventually figure out that Cox Village has a Psychic."
"By then, they'll think you're hiding something. It's better to let me meet them directly; it shows you're being sincere," Earl suggested.
To gather intel on the West Mountain Base troops, Earl needed to get close to them.
Gavin hesitated for a long time and then said worriedly, "Once they know about your ability, they'll take you away! Earl, my boy, the Cox family needs you!"
Earl's ego was thoroughly stroked. The family chief being so polite to him was something he couldn't have dreamed of before.
"Mr. Gavin Cox, don't worry, I won't leave the Cox family." Julia was here, his beloved, his anchor. How could he possibly leave her behind?
Gavin realized that Earl's mindset had changed and he wasn't so easily controlled anymore.
So Gavin had to say, "Alright, I'll introduce you to the higher-ups! But remember your promise, you can't leave with them."
Earl readily agreed.
Gavin reluctantly led Earl to meet Shawn, Yosef, and the others.
At this time, Shawn and his group were resting in a snow house.
A fire was burning in the middle of the snow house, and a group of people sat around it, eating and warming themselves.
When they saw Gavin bringing Earl in, the soldiers all looked over.
Gavin greeted them with a fawning expression. "Officers, I hope the food we prepared is to your satisfaction?"
Shawn nodded. "Not bad."
Yosef smiled and said, "Thank you!"
He pointed to Earl. "Who's this?"
After entering, Earl tried to help Steven gather intelligence, so he scanned everyone present.
This strange look naturally caught Yosef's attention.
Gavin smiled and introduced, "This is my grandson Earl. He's a Psychic, and I wanted to introduce him to you."
As soon as they heard Earl was a Psychic, the dozen or so soldiers present immediately stopped what they were doing and looked at Earl in surprise.
The probability of finding a Psychic in the outside world was extremely low. Most people died after mutating, and only a few showed positive mutations, becoming Psychics with powerful Supernatural abilities.
Even the entire West Mountain Base didn't have many natural Psychics.
And among all the people present, although they were all well-trained soldiers, none of them were natural Psychics.
As for Shawn and Yosef, they became modified Psychics only after paying a huge price.
So when they heard Earl was a Psychic, their eyes were filled with curiosity, envy, and jealousy.
Shawn immediately stood up and walked to Earl. "You're a Psychic? What Supernatural ability do you have?"
To gain the trust of these soldiers, Earl said, "I can control some ice and snow. Look, I built all the snow houses in Cox Village!"
As he spoke, he gently moved his right hand, and the snow on the ground floated up, forming a snowball in his palm.
Shawn and the others widened their eyes, no longer doubting.
Especially Shawn, who excitedly walked over and hugged Earl's shoulder, shaking him vigorously. "Good; that's good! I didn't expect to find such a talent in this small village!"
Finding a Psychic was a huge achievement!
This way, the blame for his failed mission could be offset.
How could Shawn not be happy?
