Chapter 510 The Investigation Team Returns
"This is Otha," he said, his voice as cold as the snow outside.
On the other end, Steven's voice crackled through the phone. "Mr. Soderberg, it's Steven. Have you left Starlight City yet?"
Otha glanced out the window; they were just about ten miles from the city limits.
"Almost," he replied, still flat.
Steven's heart skipped a beat, but he kept his cool.
"There's something you need to know before you go."
"What is it?"
"I've found another horde of zombies!" Steven blurted out.
Otha's icy demeanor cracked for a moment.
Steven pressed on, "And this time, it's even bigger and nastier than before!"
Otha couldn't hold back. "Stop the car!" he barked at Theron.
Theron slammed on the brakes.
The investigation team members exchanged puzzled looks, unsure of what Steven had just told Otha.
Otha's face was stone-cold, his expression deadly serious.
"Where did you find them?"
"In the deepest part of the subway tunnel in the Amber District. There must be at least a hundred thousand of them," Steven said.
Otha took a deep breath and let it out through his nose, hard.
His mind raced. If Steven was right, it meant his suspicions were spot on. The zombie crisis in Starlight City wasn't over!
The current calm was just a facade, to trick them into leaving Starlight City.
Otha was livid; they'd been played!
But he was also worried.
Anyone who could pull off such a scheme and control a massive horde of zombies was no ordinary Zombie King.
Maybe the white-haired monkeys they killed weren't the real Zombie King at all! There had to be someone higher up calling the shots!
Otha clenched his thigh and asked, "How did you find out? Is this info legit?"
Steven hesitated.
He'd planned to lie and say he stumbled upon it. But with someone as sharp as Otha, it was best to be straight.
"I've always suspected the zombie crisis wasn't fully resolved."
"So after I got back, I hunted down the remaining zombies and checked out various subway stations."
"Finally, my efforts paid off, and I found them."
Steven held the satellite phone, waiting for Otha's response.
He hoped the investigation team would stay. Otha was crucial in his plans.
Only with the power of Silvercrest District and Otha's strength could they tackle the huge threat of Natasha!
Steven and Cindy figured Otha would stay after hearing this.
Because if the zombie problem wasn't fixed, their mission wasn't done, and they couldn't report back to Silvercrest District.
As the captain, Otha had to check it out.
Otha asked, "Where are you now?"
"I'm at home."
"Alright, I'll come find you now."
With that, Otha hung up. He turned to Theron, "Turn around, head to Steven's shelter!"
"Got it!" Theron grinned, spun the car around, and the snow vehicle made a wide arc on the snowfield, heading towards Hermes District.
The other members of the investigation team exchanged confused glances.
Lanny frowned, clearly annoyed. "Otha, why are we going to see Steven?"
Otha pushed his sunglasses up and said flatly, "The zombies might not be completely dealt with. How can we just leave?"
As he spoke, he suddenly covered his mouth and started coughing violently, the kind of cough that sounded like it could tear his lungs out.
Lanny's face showed concern, and he quickly pulled Eris over. "Quick, check on Otha!"
Eris opened her medical kit, took out a bottle of pills, and handed two to Otha.
Otha coughed for a long time, and when he extended his hand, his palm was full of bright red blood. Everyone's expressions turned serious.
Otha silently lowered his hand, took the pills from Eris, and swallowed them. Though the medication didn't really help his condition anymore, it could at least ease the pain.
There was a hint of sadness in everyone's eyes. Even Theron, who was usually all smiles, looked downcast.
Otha, however, nonchalantly wiped the blood from his mouth and palm with a tissue. "No need to look like that. I never regret getting this Supernatural ability. Because of it, we've survived countless life-and-death crises."
"Everything has two sides, and you have to pay a price. In the apocalypse, you have to get used to this kind of thing. Don't let sadness cloud your judgment. You need to maintain absolute rationality."
Meanwhile, after hanging up the phone, Steven waited at home for Otha to arrive. He had already planned out what to say.
He needed to involve Silvercrest District so they couldn't back out of this mess.
A few hours later, the investigation team's car pulled up in front of the shelter.
Steven had instructed Elinor and Nora to prepare food for their guests, but it was clear that neither Otha nor the others were in the mood to eat. They all wore serious expressions.
"Steven, you better explain clearly what you found today! If you're playing us, I won't let you off!" Lanny glared at Steven, his eyebrows raised, looking fierce.
Steven didn't even look at him because he knew Lanny's words didn't matter.
He looked at Otha and Theron. "Gentlemen, please come inside, and we can discuss this matter slowly."
Steven asked the others in the house to leave, wanting to talk to the investigation team alone.
After sitting down, Theron said, "Steven, we've known each other for a while. Zombies are no small matter; the higher-ups in Blizzard City are very concerned. If there's anything, just say it! Don't joke about this!"
Steven nodded. "I wouldn't dare joke about such a thing! Let me show you something."
