Chapter 216 A Desperate Fight

Earl's gut feeling wasn't off.

Even he almost got taken out by that black beast without the right prep, so regular folks didn't stand a chance.

And with its size, it must've needed a ton of food, way more than any normal person.

Earl couldn't fathom how it could have survived so long, unless it was feeding on students at the school.

But Steven had a different take.

"There's something you all missed earlier; the monster didn't come at us right away," Steven said.

He looked at Earl and added, "If you hadn't freaked out and attacked it, maybe things wouldn't have gone south."

Earl looked confused. "Did I really piss it off? I was scared out of my mind!"

Steven thought back to the monster's eyes, feeling like it had some smarts, not just a mindless predator.

"Maybe the mutation made it smarter, almost like a human. And from that phone call, I did hear Cindy's voice. It couldn't have been the monster calling," he said.

He walked over to the edge of the massive hole and peered down.

The hole was so big, you could drive a car through it.

The air flowing through the hole might explain why the students hadn't suffocated.

Steven thought for a bit before deciding. "Let's go down and check it out!"

"What? Go down there?" Earl was shocked. "What if we run into that thing again? It's its turf down there!"

Steven gave Earl a long look.

"Want to rethink that?" he asked.

Earl felt lost under Steven's stare.

Taking a deep breath, Steven said, "Did you forget your power? You're an Ice and Snow Psychic, and you're scared to fight in the snow?"

Earl suddenly got it. "Oh, right!"

With his power, the more snow, the stronger he got.

Even deep in the snow, if that monster showed up, Earl could bury it under tons of snow in no time!

Earl scratched his head, embarrassed. "I just got a little freaked out!"

Steven didn't push it further.

Out of the three, Earl had the least battle experience and was the most skittish.

With more fights, he'd get stronger.

It wasn't just about having powers; smarts, guts, and even luck played a part in being strong.

With Earl's snow powers, Steven's rock-solid defense, and Henry as their tank, they weren't too worried about facing the monster underground.

Steven stashed the two snowmobiles in the extradimensional space, and the three of them jumped down the hole the monster had made.

Once they landed, they found a network of tunnels under the snow.

This was the monster's domain, and it had carved out a bunch of passages, though it was pretty dark.

Steven pulled out a headlamp, and when he switched it on, it lit up over a hundred feet ahead.

Now, even if the monster tried a sneak attack in the dark, it wouldn't work.

Steven took out two boxes of crayons from the extradimensional space and said, "We'll use these to mark our path so we don't get lost down here."

"But what if we still can't find our way?" Earl asked.

Henry sniffed the air cautiously. "I smell blood. Lots of it."

Earl jumped in, "It's gotta be that monster! Who knows how many people it's eaten. We should follow the path with the least blood smell."

Steven rolled his eyes at Earl's nervousness.

"Come on, man. We're all here, and the snow is your playground. Can you toughen up a bit? If we run into it, it should be the one running scared," he said.

As Steven spoke, he pulled out a golden handgun from the extradimensional space and started loading bullets into the magazine.

Henry's eyes widened. "Golden Desert Eagle!"

"Yep," Steven said calmly.

The Desert Eagle, one of the most powerful handguns out there.

In terms of firepower, it was leagues ahead of the police handgun he used before!

To put it bluntly, even the famous AK rifle didn't pack as much punch.

The downside? It's heavy and kicks like a mule, so not everyone can handle it.

With armor-piercing rounds, if they ran into the monster, they could do some serious damage.

Steven loaded the bullets, chambered a round, and said to Henry, "Henry, your scouting skills are top-notch. Let's follow the monster's trail! It needs to eat, so it'll head where there are people. If we follow it, we'll find the survivors."

Earl was still a bit jittery.

His supernatural powers hadn't made him any braver.

"But what if we run into it? That'd be bad news," he said.

Steven squinted slightly. "What are you scared of? We're all here! If we run into it, just use your ice and snow to trap it. If it behaves, fine. If it attacks, we take it down!"

Hearing Steven's confident words, Earl felt a bit more at ease. "Okay, boss!"

To Earl, having a leader like Steven was a huge relief!

Henry took the lead, following the scent of blood, while Steven marked the snow walls every ten feet with a crayon, leaving just a small mark.

This way, the marks wouldn't be easily spotted and erased by the monster.

Over at the Innovation Academy Gymnasium, Lily had been holed up with over forty surviving students for three days.

The last time they went out for food was also three days ago.

In other words, everyone in the gym was starving.

Lily was in a tough spot.

The monster was lurking around, ready to pounce on any student who showed a weakness.

Lily couldn't leave the students to search for food alone.

But sending others out was like sending them to their deaths.

Regular folks wouldn't last a minute against that mutant.

If the students hid in a sealed room, the thin air under the snow would suffocate them even if the monster didn't get them.

Lily had the strength to fight the monster but couldn't take the students with her to search for supplies.

They'd tried that before; the monster ignored her and went straight for the students, causing heavy casualties.

Now, she was guarding the gym door with a broadsword.

For three days, the monster hadn't attacked again.

But her gut told her it was close by.

"We can't keep this up!" Lily muttered, her eyes showing exhaustion.

For three days, she had barely eaten, and the hunger was making her anxious and uneasy.

If this kept up, they'd starve before the monster even attacked.

Lily wanted to protect all the students; it was her duty as a teacher and a top-notch bodyguard.

But reality was harsh, forcing her to consider making sacrifices.
