Chapter 524 Show Off
Neil had completely lost control of the situation. In truth, their command over the zombie horde had never been absolute—they couldn't direct the undead precisely as they wished.
One wrong move now could cost him his life. In desperation, he'd chosen to extract Otha alone, believing that as long as Otha survived, the situation might still be salvageable.
Otha immediately saw through Neil's intentions. "You think rescuing just me will resolve this crisis? Don't be so naive!" he snapped.
"Silvercrest District has lost all patience with Starlight City's zombie problem. If we can't eliminate this horde within 24 hours, everyone here dies!"
Neil's pupils contracted sharply. "What? That's impossible!" His voice rose in panic.
"This is absurd! There are over a hundred thousand zombies out there, and we've already exhausted our resources. How are we supposed to handle this?"
"How else?" Otha replied coldly. "We fight to the death."
Neil's expression twisted into something worse than if he'd swallowed poison, his features contorting grotesquely. In his eyes flashed a momentary glimpse of venom and loathing.
From his perspective, if Otha and his people had never come to Starlight City, their grand plans would already have been realized!
Through Otha's communicator, Steven and the others heard every word of this exchange.
Steven frowned, realizing the situation differed from what he'd anticipated. Neil's tone carried genuine anxiety—this wasn't an act.
'Strange,' Steven thought. 'Aren't they the ones controlling the horde? Is he just reluctant to sacrifice these carefully cultivated zombies? Is this all theater?'
At Emberwick Base's edge, Otha's group had reached the shore. Immediately, a brutal battle erupted.
Over a dozen elite Psychics were instantly engulfed by the zombie tide as various undead creatures howled and swarmed toward them.
Otha removed his sunglasses and unleashed Annihilation once more. This powerful, terrifying ability instantly reduced thousands of surrounding zombies to ash.
He covered his mouth, but blood still seeped between his fingers.
"Otha!" Lanny cried out in horror. Enraged, he launched his Levitating Energy Cannon in all directions. Even the most resilient Bronze Elite Zombies were left with gaping holes when struck by his light orbs.
"Move! Break through!" Otha commanded, fighting through his physical distress.
From above, Neil used his Telekinesis to disperse the zombies.
"Something... seems wrong," Lily observed, watching the horde behind them with a furrowed brow. "The zombies we've encountered today are more aggressive than before."
We've only drawn a small portion of the horde, but there are still over a hundred thousand surrounding the investigation team. Can they possibly survive this?"
Steven's gaze sharpened, his expression turning deadly serious. The situation had diverged from his expectations.
His original plan had been to use this incident to force Snowfall Cult to relinquish control of the zombies.
That way, even if Natasha possessed great power, she wouldn't have the confidence to turn against the other four factions.
But clearly, events were moving in an unpredictable direction.
Either Snowfall Cult had gone insane and truly intended to eliminate the investigation team and possibly the other factions in one stroke—or more likely, even Snowfall Cult could no longer control the horde.
Steven believed the latter. He didn't think Natasha or Neil were foolish enough to act without considering consequences.
But right now, solving this enormous problem was the priority!
"If there's no other way, I'll go over there and show off a bit," Steven said, his eyes gleaming brightly despite the cryptic smile playing at his lips.
His teammates looked at him. "What are you planning to do?"
Steven glanced at them. "I'll use my Double Dimension Door ability to cross over and rescue them."
Steven's Dimension Door had a range of 1000 feet from himself. Within this radius, opening two doors simultaneously allowed for spatial traversal.
The Dimension Door required no energy to maintain and had no cooldown period. In other words, if Steven moved quickly enough, he could achieve something like teleportation to reach Otha's group.
His words made the others' eyes light up. They recalled how Steven had used Dimension Door to help them escape the zombie encirclement when they entered the subway.
However, until now, Steven had never explained the specific conditions for using the doors—their range, duration, whether they could be used multiple times. They had no idea if he could use this ability to save people.
Now, receiving confirmation, they smiled with relief. "You should have said so earlier! If this was possible, we could have avoided all this trouble from the beginning."
Steven's gaze drifted to the distance beyond the window. "I think you've misunderstood what I said. When I talk about rescuing them, I don't mean what you think."
They exchanged confused glances. "Then what kind of rescue?"
"Silvercrest District's ultimatum was to resolve Starlight City's zombie problem within 24 hours," Steven said flatly. "Not to ensure everyone on the investigation team survives."
"Even if I extract them from the horde, it would be meaningless—it wouldn't prevent The Grim Reaper's Sigh from being deployed. We now have—well, less than 16 hours left." He glanced at his wristwatch.
The others' expressions grew grave again.
"That's impossible," Earl said. "Even though Megan eliminated over a hundred thousand zombies by igniting the crude oil, most of the Bronze Elite Zombies and Bronze Flying Elite Zombies survived. There's no way we can eliminate all the remaining zombies by ourselves!"
Lily frowned. "Perhaps the 24-hour deadline was just an excuse from the beginning. Silvercrest District judged that we couldn't possibly resolve the zombie crisis and had already planned to use The Grim Reaper's Sigh. Those 24 hours were just a courtesy for Otha's investigation team."
Earl trembled, looking at Steven with desperate hope. "Steven, let's escape! There's still time to leave Starlight City!"
Steven paused, then a faint smile appeared on his face. "As I said, if nobody else has a solution, I'll go show off a little. This is my final attempt—we still have time. If it fails, then we leave."
With those words, he leaped out of the car window. In a flash, his figure disappeared into the horde 1000 feet away.
Before the zombies could react, Steven's silhouette flickered again toward Otha's position.
"Steven!" Earl cried out in terror, clinging to the window.
Fluffy's ears perked up, eyes wide with tension.
Steven had given them no chance to dissuade him before departing.
"It's alright! Even if Steven's ability can't resolve the horde problem, he can escape safely," Henry reassured them. "Let's follow his instructions and wait here for his return."
As he spoke, he hoisted a rocket launcher onto his shoulder and fired a powerful blast at the pursuing zombies!
Instantly, dozens of zombies were blown apart, limbs and body parts scattering across the ground.
