Chapter 73 The Scheming Mother

After a while, Steven heard a knock on the door.

Then came Henry's voice.

"Steven, it's Henry. Are you home?"

He habitually glanced outside through the surveillance camera.

But soon, Steven frowned because standing at the door was not only Henry but also a woman holding a child.

Although she was wrapped in a thick down jacket, Steven knew it must be Cara.

"What is she doing here?" Steven had a fairly good impression of Henry, but he had no connection with Cara.

Moreover, based on past experiences, he always felt this woman was not a good person.

Steven stood up from his chair and walked to the door.

Elinor just glanced but did nothing; Steven was the master of this house.

He came to the door but didn't open it. "Is it Mr. Garcia?"

He asked knowingly.

Henry said, "Yes, it's me."

At this moment, Cara, behind him quickly said, "Steven, Mia has a high fever that won't go down. Please help her!" Her voice was tinged with sobs.

Steven took out a box of acetaminophen suspension drops and a box of children's cold medicine he had prepared and threw them out through the shooting hole.

"Just take the medicine and give it to the child! It's no small matter being sick at this time."

Henry hurriedly picked up the medicine from the ground, his eyes full of excitement.

"Steven, thank you, thank you so much!"

Cara took the medicine.

Henry wanted to leave with her, but a strange light flashed in her eyes.

She said, "Steven, I have a request. Can Mia stay at your house for a while?"

"I know you have a heater in your house, and it's warmer. Our place is freezing!"

"Mia is sick now, and I'm worried she'll get worse. Can you do us this favor?"

Henry was taken aback.

When they came, Cara hadn't mentioned this to him.

He felt a bit embarrassed since he hadn't discussed this with Steven beforehand.

Now that Cara suddenly brought it up, he didn't know what to say.

But seeing Cara's pleading eyes, he was at a loss for words.

Inside, Steven heard Cara's words and slightly smiled.

She sure was greedy, wasn't she?

"Is it Mrs. Daniels? I'm sorry, but in these dire times, I can't let anyone in. Besides, we're running low on coal, so it's not much warmer than outside." Steven wouldn't be swayed by her.

Cara's reasoning was very sound; she was doing it for the child.

But neither he nor Elinor had any experience taking care of a child, and even if they did, he wouldn't bother with such a troublesome task.

So once the child was let in, Cara could use the excuse of taking care of the child to come in too.

Then, she wouldn't leave easily, and if she had some ill intentions, Steven would have to be on guard 24/7.

He wasn't willing to go through that trouble!

Hearing Steven's words, Henry quietly said to Cara, "Steven has been very kind to us, giving the child medicine. Let's just put on more clothes and keep warm."

Cara wiped her tears and said tearfully, "What do you know about it? Mia is so small, her body is very fragile."

She then said to Steven inside, "Steven, I know this request is a bit inappropriate, but I really have no other choice!"

"I know you have a kind heart, so I dared to make this request."

"Please show some kindness and help Henry by letting Mia stay at your place for a while!"

Cara's words also dragged Henry into it.

Generally, if a person was not particularly indifferent, they would usually agree to such a request.

When one made a big request to someone, it was best to start with a small one.

Once the other person agreed to the small request, they were less likely to refuse the bigger one that follows.

This showed how cunning this woman was.

Cara deliberately didn't discuss it with Henry beforehand but waited until Steven had given the medicine to ask for Mia to stay at Steven's house.

But she underestimated how ruthless Steven could be.

Steven leaned against the door with his arms crossed, "Mrs. Daniels, if this was before the apocalypse, I would definitely say yes."

"But now you know, everyone in this building wants to take over my place and my life."

"I'm really scared and can't let strangers in."

"I'm sure you understand, right? Mr. Garcia, you understand, don't you?"

Henry nodded repeatedly.

He felt very awkward, and his gratitude towards Steven made him unwilling to trouble Steven further.

So he replied, "Yes, Steven has been very kind to us! Who else would give us medicine? Do you know how hard it is to get medicine now?"

Cara bit her lip and didn't argue with Henry; she just looked pitiful with tears in her eyes. "But he let Elinor stay in their house, didn't he?"

Steven sneered and said, "Elinor is my girlfriend. Is there a problem with that?"

Hearing this, Elinor slightly smiled, knowing Steven was just brushing them off, but still, she felt a bit pleased.

Women cared more about sweet words from men than the truth.

Even if they knew it was fake, they would self-hypnotize to believe it was real.

Cara frowned slightly, seemingly thinking of a response.

But Henry didn't want to wait any longer!

Steven had helped him several times; he couldn't be so shameless!

So he pulled Cara, looking a bit serious, and said, "Let's go, we shouldn't trouble them anymore. Steven has been kind enough to us already, don't push it!"

Seeing Henry really getting a bit angry, Cara immediately put on a wronged expression.

"I know, I don't want to do this either, I'm just thinking about the child," she explained.

Henry said to Steven inside, "Sorry, Steven. Don't mind her. Thanks a lot for this!"

Steven also said, "It's okay, everyone can understand this feeling. Let's support each other."

Through the surveillance, Steven saw Henry taking Cara and the child downstairs.

He returned to the dining table and said to Elinor, "That woman is a bit of trouble!"

Elinor said indifferently, "Aren't there many people like that?"

Steven shrugged, "True, but I have a good relationship with Henry. I'm afraid she'll interfere with our relationship."

Henry was Steven's chosen ideal subordinate.

Steven didn't want a woman by Henry's side, badmouthing him in Henry's ear every day.

Steven became a bit more wary of Cara.

At the very least, she had her eyes on Steven's house and supplies.
